Strength:

Excellent pictue, and sound

Weakness:

Remote is extremly boring!!! Display is too large, looks like an alarm clock type display. DVD drawer is poorly constructed (very loose, and it sags)Player does not sit evenly.

I think that my statements above say it all. I love Yamaha overall and would own nothing else, but when it comes to their DVD players they have alot of work to do

Strength:

Quiet Operation, clear picture, smooth sound, ease of setup and use

Weakness:

no code to set up the dvd remote with my receiver's universal remote (no biggie)

Does everything that I ask it to do and does it well. Matches my other Yamaha equipment. Picture quality and sound MUCH better than the SONY unit that just crapped out on me. Operation of unit is very smooth and quiet. I am quite happy with the purchase since the unit only cost me $135 (SONY wanted $180 to "repair" their DVP-S360 under "warranty" on an obviously design flaw on the unit) Dont get me started here!

Strength:

Excellent picture quality. Good audio CD playback. Easy to operate. Price is damn cheap considering the quality of the product.

Weakness:

None so far.

Before buying this product, I did some amount of research on the products available in the market. This was the best offer I could find that was agreable to my budget.

I must say that it was a great buy. The player is great. The picture quality is excellent. I tried playing all of my favorite audio CDs(ranging from Jazz, Slow Rock to Heavy Metal) and the playback was again excellent.

The following are some of it's features.

Optical and Coaxial digital outputs for Dolby Digital, DTS Digital Surround and PCM.
CD-R and CD-RW Playback Compatibility.
Dual Laser Optical Pickup System.
TruSurround 3D Sound for Analog Out.
Adjustable black levels.
Noiseless play back.
DVD Audio ready.

The only problems that I found are,
1. The remote is a bit old fashioned. (but it's very simple and easy to use)
2. The onscreen menus are not clear enough.

But these are minor problems and it's doesn't matter much.

I feel that this product deserves a much higher rating than what is shown in this site.
I would recommend this product any day to someone who is looking for an affordable DVD player which is as good as the so called highly priced premium players.

My HT is having the following configuration.

Yamaha DVD S510
Yamaha RX V520 A/V Receiver
Infiniy Reference 61 MK2 main speakers.
Infinity Alpha center speaker.
Magnat Jubilee 26 (floor standing) as rear speakers.

Strength:

Videoquality is very good. Read CD-R, CD-RW. Read problematic DVD's. Compact remote.

Weakness:

Without MP3 support. Compact remote - many functions you can use only when you see them on TV screen.

This player is copy of MARANTZ DV4100 produced in same factory in Hungary (for European market). But also it is near $20 cheaper then Marantz.

It has very nice picture, read CD-R and CD-RW. It hasn't support for MP3 that is great minus.
Since I had opportunity to test several different region-free DVD players like AIWA XD-DV 370, PIONEER 535, CyberHome AD-M 212/512...conclusion is:

BEST PICTURE - YAMAHA (no support for MP3)

BEST SOUND - PIONEER (but also problems with many DVD's)

BEST OVERALL PRODUCT - AIWA (finding a specific MP3 track is misery)

BEST BUY - CyberHome AD-M 512 (too light picture, and problems with MP3 reproduction)

Anyhow, don't be cheated with "Sony fan club" reviews!!!
Sony stinks! Mostly it has not CD-R support?!? Mostly it is not region free?!? And mostly it is much more expensive then others.

Strength:

Easy remote, great blacks, easy to read front panel, simple and solid

Weakness:

I picked up the sony after throughing out my Toshiba 2109. It just stopped working, tray would jam, skipping, and other stuff. To much to fix it, so I decided to replace it.
I would never buy another Toshiba again, after all the problems.
Picked up the 510 after playing it against the Sony and Pioneer. The Sony in the store had some flicker problems, and the Pioneer just seemed cheaply made.
I wanted something that had great blacks, simple to use, and seemed solid.
The Yamaha fit the bill. I have been running it for about 9 months and no problems.
The remote is a easy, not like the toshiba I had or the sony that I looked at in the store. How many buttons do you need?
I like the Yamaha so much, I just bought one for a friend for X-mas. It is the 520. I don't know what the difference is, but it looks just like the 510.

Everything!!!! Won't play certain DVD's without skipping, pausing, or ejecting the disc. Display looks like an alarm clock!! Remote is boring.

This player is the worst!!!! I suggest to everyone to sell it if you have it and get a different brand, and those who are thinking of buying it....DON'T!!!!!!

Strength:

Excellent price/performance ratio. Fine picture quality and decent sound quality. Well built for machine at this price.

Weakness:

None at this price.

See above. If you are in the market for a cheap DVD player, you won't go far wrong with this machine. Warranty is 2 years - which is good. Nice Big, easy to read display. I've only had it for a few days so am not able to comment on Quality Control issue. That aside, highly recommended!

Strength:

Plays green & silver CD-R's that have been burned at high speed (8x). Plays SVCD's and shows the SVCD menu (I make homebrew SVCD CD-R disks on my computer, and play them on the DVD-S510, the quality is smokin!). Dual composite video and stereo audio outputs.

Weakness:

Tray feels a bit flimsy. Had to return my first 510 since the tray would close only half-way, then jam. The second one works fine so far.

In CD Audio playback, the time display only shows elapsed time, not track remaining or disk remaining time.

Have to wait a few seconds for an inserted disk (even audio CD's) to be scanned before it starts playing.

Bought this one over other machines primarily for SVCD capability and full CDR compatibility. For this, it's been great.

For a machine that's so simple, I think the understated remote control is fine. I use a universal Sony remote anyways, the Yamaha remote is stowed away somewhere.

BTW, the playback of normal DVD's has excellent quality.

If you're into DTS Music CD's, the 510 also passes DTS-Audio (music only CD's) signal out the digital outputs, and my AV Receiver decoded and played the DTS-Audio disk.
