This VCR is absolutely fantastic... Got it from OneCall for $312. Excellent customer service as compared to SupremeVideo which, by the way, sold the VCR a bit more expensive. Makes movies on my Toshiba RPTV look like they should. Cable was only a slight improvement but I am sure that is the company's fault and not this VCR's. S-Video really makes an improvement on the playback quality than normal RCA connections and the sharpness settings make movies look like new always!

Strength:

Superb picture quality, ease of programming.

Weakness:

Needs a little more weight so it can't be moved so easily.

A great unit. Its Express Programming function makes timer recording a breeze. One of the attractions of buying the unit is its ability to get S-VHS quality from VHS tapes through a process known as S-VHS ET. With the cost of S-VHS tapes compared to VHS this sounded like a potential cost-saver. After reading the User's Manual, however, JVC cautions against using this function regularly so as to prolong the life of the machine. I've been able to find JVC S-VHS tapes for $5 each so I don't even go the S-VHS ET route. The JVC tapes are excellent. I'm a happy camper.

SVHS-ET, Commercial Advance, auto time/date set-up

Remote

My Toshiba top-of-the-line SVHS player which I purchased in 1989 went dead, so this is what I purchased to replace it. I am very pleased with the picture quality of the SVHS-ET. I have to say that over the 10 years that I have had a SVHS player, I only purchased a couple of SVHS tapes due to their high cost. Instead I used normal tapes and drilled a hole in them to record in SVHS mode or else just settled for the lower quality recording of standard VHS (it was better than standard VHS on fast speed, but not on slow speed). The picture quality of the SVHS-ET on slow speed is better than the quality I previously had by drilling a hole and recording on fast speed in SVHS mode.

I can still watch a tape recorded in SVHS-ET on my other SVHS player without SVHS-ET by drilling a hole. Picture quality is still excellent using this method even in slow speed.

I'm not happy with the remote. I can usually pick up a remote and control everything without reading the manual (other than programming to control other equipment). This remote is not self-explanatory, and to control other equipment, you have to hold your finger on the button for that equipment while you press the function. My biggest gripe is that it cannot control my Hughes satellite receiver. I wouldn't mind too much, except that it means that I cannot program the VCR to record something on satellite. Instead I have to have the satellite receiver control the remote. This isn't too bad except that for weekly recordings, my satellite receiver has to be reprogrammed each week.

Plug it in and it automatically sets the time and date! Commercial Advance is cool, but doesn't work 100% of the time. The fast forward and rewind are too fast to control while moving through commercials if Commercial Advance doesn't work (maybe they could have had 2 FF/Rewind speeds).

Paid $304 at Onecall. Excellent value. Excellent picture quality. Some minor quirks.

It is amazing that $300 buys you more today than what $1000 bought you 10 years ago.

Picture Quality, Sound Quality, Ease of use

This is a follow up to a previous review. I have now used this VCR for about 9 months now and it is still an excellent value. After nine months I have had no problems what so ever. I have it hooked to digital cable and the recordings are impossible to tell from the live broadcast. The sound quality is also excellent. I highly recommend this unit to anyone in the market for a high end VCR. Funny though, this is probably the last VCR I will ever buy after 20 years of these things and it is the first one I am 100% happy with. I guess they finally figured it all out after all these years.

S-VHS; Commercial Advance; Movie Advance; Great picture and sound; JVC name; Low Price.

Weakness:

Remote Control

This is a terrific value. For about $300 and some change you can purchase this unit.

It has a terrific picture and great sound especially when hooked into a home theater system.

We never watch commercials when we record anymore due to the Commercial Advance feature . I like to record sporting events and some shows to watch after the kids go to bed; this feature alone is worth buting this product.

We don't like to watch movie trailers, so now we don't even have to fast forward because of the Movie Advance feature. The fast forward works at 7X speed which is lightening fast so you can use this if you prefer and watch some trailers and not others.

Friends who watch recorded events with us can't tell the difference between live TV and the tape. It's very close in picture quality using an S-VHS tape and fairly close using a regular VHS tape in the ET mode.

The parent company of JVC invented VHS and sold the technology to other companies. They always have a high end VCR and this model is it. Unless you do an extensive amount of editing, the 9600 might be more appealing. It's $300 more dollars and I really don't think it's worth it.

I can't say enough about the value. VCR prices have come down because their life expectancy is now low. We have alot of kids videos and some regular VHS movies and they've never looked and sounded so good prior to our acquisition of this unit. TIVO and REPLAY may be something we'll buy in the future but for now this VCR is making me very happy.

We have a Panasonic 32sf36 color TV with this unit. Please read my review on this outstanding value. We have Paradigm speakers, Denon receiver and Sony DVD player for our home theater.

There are VCR's that have some other features, but I can't imagine a player that will give you a better picture or better sound.

Strength:

A good mix of high-end features at a reasonable price

Weakness:

Poorly designed remote requires depressing two buttons to activate any TV functions

The HR-7600U is feature laden to a tee... S-VHS, S-VHS ET, Movie Advance, Commercial Advance, Audio during variable FF and RV, video correction, editing capability. I've especially enjoyed the commercial advance capability as it is very accurate and quite a convenience. The only downside is that with commercial advance enabled it does take a significant amount of time to scan and mark the commercials before you can watch the video (~8 min per half hour of recorded material). Too bad commercial advance can't be calculated "on the fly".

I haven't tried any of the editing functions yet, but have tried most of the record & playback options. At this point I am still a bit uncertain about the video playback quality. Although the recordings in S-VHS SP or EP are at first sight pretty good, I am noticing three things that trouble me. Firstly, this VCR causes bright orange colors to bleed badly over their edges. This only happens with that color and may be similar to what another user reported as excess wash in playing back pictures of fire.

Secondly, the video picture seems to be played back with a slight "mask" or pattern over the signal that is momentarily visible when the camera angle shifts. It's hard to describe, but it's like some pixels show an artificial memory of that mask when the frame is shifted in real time. If the frame is static this mask is not noticeable, but the during panning shots these artifacts would annoy any videophile.

Lastly, compared to the same cable signal played back on my Toshiba 32 inch TV directly, the signal passed through (and played back) by the VCR is noticeably less saturated and more washed out. I'm going to try disabling "auto picture correction" and setting the picture to "normal" as recommended by another user here on this site, but if anyone else has noticed these symptoms and has a fix to recommend please do tell.

Audio & Picture, Price (here in Sweden it´s a steal)

Weakness:

Remote (but that applies for most remotes out there)

This is a remark to Howard Sun´s review.

"Good Picture and Audio quality" well, that´s what it´s all about.

Get yourself a desent remote such as Philips Pronto a.k.a. Marantz RC-5000. No wonder you think it´s a bit pricey, if you have no use for S-VHS then you just got the wrong model.

BTW, there is no such thing as a high quality Bose audio system.

Strength:

Unit has good editing features, R.A Edit,Synchro edit and JLIP.

Weakness:

Feels jeap. No record audio level adjust.

Let me start by saying that i have done this back to front. That is i first bought the recorder then cheked for reviews.
I use a sony V700E HI8 video camera and the SVHS recorder to
create a video library(our life) now 12 years old.
We have been waiting for this unit for quite some time now in this country(8 months) But now that I have it and put it thru it`s paces ,I can not understand some of the negative
reviews on this site. Ok it feels cheap and is missing some good audio record adjustments but the rest as it stands works well. The only thing a bit odd at this time is that my pre recorded SVHS tapes look terrible.Resolution is poor,
turning off the B.E.S.T and changing the picture control to sharp has improved the picture quality some what. Playing the same tape in a Panasonic SVHS machine the picture quality is as with the Sharp recorder is brilliant. However the recorded picture on the HR S7600AM that is via the front SVHS input from the HI8 camera is perfect. Strange ??
I put that question to the JVC technical staff (which incidently we are only allowed to contact between the hr`s of 1500-1600 week days, too bad if you work shift work?)
they could not answer my problem.
I found no problems with the remote and do not have to use two hands to use it. the cassette has jammed 25mm into the recorder a couple of times , maybe I pushed it too hard??
To finish, I hope that the machine will last as long as the Sharp unit if it does i`ll be very happy.
