Strength:

The best performing consumer S-VHS VCR (along with the step-up 9600)I have ever seen.

Weakness:

None, other than "perceived" build-quality.

I know you are not supposed to post twice for the same product, but I wanted to clarify some mis-information. No, I have no personal interest in JVC. It is just that I would hate to see someone buy a lesser, or worse, pay more for an inferior deck due to bad information. I have experience in pro-video production dating back to the mid-eighties, and this and the 9600 are the best performing consumer S-VHS decks I've seen.

Someone has already corrected Howard Sun (an "audiophile"!) regarding the video outputs. Why he expected video outputs to pass audio is beyond me. However, Mr. Sun mentions he can not get the JVC remote to integrate with his "high quality Bose" (three words that should never be used together) audio system. The reason for this, Mr. Sun, is because Bose uses RF remote signals, the VCR (all VCRs by the way) uses IR. I don't mean to sound condescending, just don't bash a product because you don't understand how things work.

To Vlad, who had trouble with the timer programming because the year jumped to 2001: the first time I programmed mine this also happened to me. Fortunately, I caught the error before I triggered the timer. I found that you must first press "Date-". This will always start you off on the current date. It is counter-intuitive, to say the least, to first press "Date-" to program a future recording. This is clearly a design error on JVC's part, and why they use this interface instead of the numbers keys is a mystery to me, but there is a "work-around".

And lastly, to Sanjay Kapur from Australia in regard to not being able to set the audio record levels manually: first let me say that you sound like an intelligent, reasonable, and experienced user. You may very well be correct, but on the North American version you can set the levels, however this is very easy to miss. There are no controls on the front panel, rather it is somewhat burried in a sub-menu under the "Function Set" menu. Perhaps the Australian version has is like this too. I would have prefered to have them on the front panel but at least they're there. Also, although the meters themselves are very small, each individual segment is really seperate, unlike other decks I have seen where it appears to be say, 14 segments, but is really 7 designed to look like more.

All in all, I highly recommend this deck.

After suffering much ridicule from friends about super bargain RCA svhs vcr which I purchased from Future Shop for
$300.00 just before super vhs vcrs dropped drastically in price I finally decided to go shopping. Main brands that I had chosen to look at were 1) Sony 2)JVC 3)Mitsubishi and 4)
Sharp. I fell in love with the Sony with the door you got to love! Unfortunately its still just a vcr and is not going to get my $1000.00 dollars. On the lower side of the coin was the Sharp which Costco internet site says was going for $250.00 dollars. This vcr would have controlled my Dish Network control box and records quasi svhs on standard tapes. Was able to see the unit at Fry's ($350.00) and was fairly impressed for a sharp product. But not being able to locate locally at a reasonable price ruled the Sharp out. Mitsubishi was next, but I soon found out that my choices were last year's closeouts (which is not a bad thing) or waiting for the new stuff to come out. I did find an excellent deal on the 1998 second from the top unit and showed it to my friend who promptly charged it. Thanks Steve!. However to redeem himself to me, he took me to Video Only and showed me the perfect vcr for my needs. The JVC HR-S7600U for $335.00 which was only $60.00 more than the floor model Mitsubishi that the forgiven Steve's ex-wife now proudly owns. Guess who now has a RCA svhs vcr? Justice is now served. Enough of my gloating, here is the low-down on this great vcr. The JVC's remote is well laid out and is extremely intuitive to use, the jitter stabilizer holds the picture better than others, editing for home use is more feature laden than most will ever need. It is also a very nice feature to have an svhs jack on the front of the unit. Unit is nicely styled and attractive, multi speed fast forward and rewind gives you lots of flexability. If you are in the market for an svhs vcr and you don't need pro editing features (JVC-HR-S9600) than look no further for JVC has bestowed on you the perfect vcr!

Recently purchased this from eCost.com for $308 deliverd.
It replaces my Mitsubishi HS-U760.
Very pleased with the performance and look of this unit.
I also like being able to record SVHS format onto standard VHS tapes using the SVHS-ET recording mode.

Strength:

Great picture
Really cleans up noise on older tapes

Weakness:

Needs a better build quality

I was amazed at the picture it delivered via the s-video output. It really made old tapes look great. The SVHS-ET really does an amazing job of recording on standard VHS tapes.

Strength:

Exelent picture quality ?

Weakness:

not known yet

JVC have known as a fore front developer of Super VHS format, and they make very good VCR in this catagory, or I should say the only manufacturer who is promoting and believe this format will even sustain the globalisation of Digital Revolution.
Currently I am looking for JVC SVHS VCR model HR-S7600AM, which is a multi system version of HR-S7600U.
Can someone help me: Where can I buy this online or in Singapore, Hong Kong , jakarta or Perth ??? with the lowest price of course.
And any reviews regarding this equipment is wellcome, E-mail please.
Is it justified for me to replace my old SVHS VCR HR-SC1000U, which I used for over 10 years ?? In term of picture quality.

Strength:

Features, Playback/Record Quality

Weakness:

Sometimes it's picky about inserting the tape.

This is the first VCR I've owned that has and does everything I want (at the cheapest I've paid for one). SVHS recording from Dish Network is almost as good as the original (as good on a first use tape). Playback is clear and jitter-free (Sony 27" non-XBR). I started with the S-Video cable that came with it (yes, I know) and that was okay. Then I bought a few BetterCables S-Video cables and the picture really came to life (no surprise here). My girlfriend even noticed! The sound quality is also excellent with good interconnects. I opted for the 7600 instead of the 9600 because it's black in color (matches everything else I own) and thought I might regret it but I can't even remember why I wanted the 9600 in the first place anymore. Like someone below said, I probably won't ever buy another VCR and I'm glad my last one is just about perfect. The only thing I can say negative about it is that it likes the tape put in a certain way (slowly and straight) but once I figured that out it hasn't popped any back at me since.

Strength:

Good picture and clear sound.

Weakness:

Cheap feeling remote and sloppy ergonomics

I like this VCR pretty much so far and I feel I got a pretty good deal for what I paid for it. It has a really nice picture and great sound. Also, there are lots of cool features like SVHS, SVHS-ET, Commercial Advance, good compatablity with my DBS receiver among other things. However, this unit isn't perfect. The build quality seems kinda cheap, especially with the remote: it makes me realize just how nice Sony remotes are; this JVC remote is pretty much crap, IMHO. Also, their ergonomics on the front panel are a bit strnage and I think they could have been done better. I don't reget buying this VCR, but I wonder, sometimes, if I would have just as good off buying a less expensive Sony or other brand unit. This VCR definitely deserves a look if considering a higher-end player.

Strength:

Great picture and sound; easy remote to use and handle; very nice features; quiet

Weakness:

I bought this particular unit to upgrade my VCR capabilities. I have an old 9 year Sony that has been pretty good to me. I read a lot of reviews on this sight and took my salesman's advice/recommendations. I thought about the Panasonics but did not like what folks had to say about them. Got mine at ComputAbility for About $340. So far it has been stellar. I would encourage anyone looking for an SVHS to consider this one.

Strength:

svhs output, picture quality, svhs mode on std tapes

Weakness:

Has the feel of cheap equipment

I am very impressed with the picture quality of this unit. When tapes are recorded in the svhs mode it is very difficult to tell the difference between the VCR and the DBS satellite. The picture quality of even commerical vhs tapes is very impressive.

The only problem I have had with the unit is that my children's "Jungle Book" tape will not automatically load into the unit without assistance. I don't know if the tape is slightly oversized or what. That is the only tape that this happens on.

Other than the previously mentioned inconvience, the unit has performed satisfactorily.
