TOO MANY TOO LIST This is a followup to my original review. After weeks of frustration I finnally received a replacement from Toshiba. It is even worse than the first one, poor resulution, poor detail, poor color, poor contrast. I have a cheap Samsung regular VHS deck and it records better in regular VHS than this thing does in SVHS. If I play a tape from the Samsung on this it looks better than SVHS recorded on this W808. Similar Products Used: JVC HR-S9500U,HR-S4500U,Sharp VCS100U,Mitsubishi HS-U775,Philips VRA999 |

defective picture The vcr arrived double boxed and apparently in good condition, so it is doubtful that it was damaged in transit. |

Strength:
DNR, picture quality
Weakness:
awkard design of remote control that makes me hard to find where to install battery; remote control is not very sharp; user manual is confusing (it says that DNR appears in the Setup Manual on TV but it does not appear) The Toshiba W808 offers excellent picture. I used it to play a pre-viewed movie that I bought from Ebay and the movie is more than eight years old. To my amazement, W808 produced much better picture quality than my old Sharp VCR. I would have thought my old Sharp is good enough had I not used W808 to play the pre-viewed movie side by side. The Sharp produced noise in sound and stripes and thick dots in picture due to wear and tear of the pre-viwed movie. I think it must be the DNR that minimizes the noise and stripes. dnr pro cleans up picture without softening the picture, give details on black shadow
Weakness:
recording of svhs-et and color is washed out DNR is really good, cleans up almost all of the noise and the unstable dot on the background of the out of focus human faces or striaght edge. It even work the on tv. or cable in to the vcr. Unfortuneatly, it's probably the only good thing about it. The color is wash out by alot. compare to the my old mitsubshi 581. The remote is is fine, setup is easy. Didn't have problem with DNR like some of use here. It is ideal for big screen that you could easier see noise of the picture. But What good is a clean very stable picture without good color ???????? Similar Products Used: mitsubshi 746, mitsubshi 581, jvc old machines |

Strength:
Some of my tapes did play back pretty well, but after hearing all of the hype about its picture quality, I was disappointed.
Weakness:
Overall circuitry isn't up to par. Red and green(usually green) blotches flash across the screen, and distort the image. Not as good a picture as others have said. Weak tuner(in my opinion). Surprisingly, I'm not too happy with this machine. I was very excited to receive this VCR when I placed the order, but I was quickly upset when I began using it. It's a little hard to explain, but the tuner in this VCR isn't up to par. The picture at times looks rather WEAK, and the colors aren't very rich and defined. I LOVE my other Toshiba VCR--it's a standard model(not Super VHS), and it's my favorite VCR ever. I think I got a decent deal on this VCR--$256 delivered--however, I just sold it, and I'll be MUCH more careful in the future before I make a purchase. I'll MAKE SURE that I have the ability to demo the unit prior to purchase, even if that simply means doing so in a store. Also, this machine has a problem with flashing red and green blotches across the screen at times, particularly when you unpause a cassette. No MAJOR deal, but pretty annoying, and something that simply shouldn't be. As much as I hate to do so, I MUST give this unit a thumbs down. poor picture quality for recording on S-ET, bad remote, quality not reliable I left a reivew on this VCR three months ago and at that time, the picture on regular mode was very good and recording on S-ET was beyond my expectation too. Similar Products Used: Sharp |

Strength:
Great machine with Super VHS capability--Toshiba VCR's tend to be amongst the best consumer models(I said AMONGST, there certainly ARE better ones out there from other manufacturers.
Weakness:
I've overcome them all. I must say, I've personally had a fairly monumental change of thought. Directly under this review, I gave this VCR a very poor rating, but after some careful adjustments, and an upgrade of my power source, this seems like different machine. It has really been performing quite well in all aspects! Similar Products Used: Other Toshiba VCR's(about 3) |
