Strength:

BASS, BASS, BASS and more BASS. This thing hits hard, I love the design and the way the system was built. Suround sounds very well with good surround speakers. I would highly recommend this system to anyone who likes bass.

Weakness:

Port noise, Port noise, and more Port noise. What were they thinking when they done this. But thats alright i unhooked the to side firing subs and hooked up a dual voice coil sub i got from radio shack and it hits like 3 times harder than the ones on the system. Way deeper by the way.Thats all i complain about. OH yeah teh skipping through cd's on the remote thing sucks too but nothing major.

Get it if you like bass

If bass isnt your thing then go with somehting else unless you like the surround feeling the surround sound if very nice

Strength:

Bass! Like the definable config's for tone too. Dolby works well.

Weakness:

Not many - if the remote breaks, good luck... More inputs would be nice. Instructions aren't great, but it's not brain surgery either!

Precursor: I own a "large" HT system (Yamaha RX-V3000, Klipsch KLF-30s, etc) and read this board religiously.

Got this for my girlfriend for Xmas (ok, so Xmas came early this year ). Anyway, WOW great system. I can't say enough about the sound! The bass you can pump from this little system floored me, and mids and highs were clear. Also liked how you can program a couple preset tone configs in addition to the many they give ya. Being able to change Bass, Mid, and Highs was cool instead of just the standard Treble/Bass.

The inputs for surround are great - two "standard" like you would get out of a hi-fi VCR, but it's also got more inputs for surrounds and a sub which is cool if you have a DVD player or something with these seperate outputs (just so happens her Sony does!) Tried out Days of Thunder from my VCR to test out the surround mode - worked great (alhtough i havn't found a way to adjust rear volume yet) A couple more inputs would be nice though...

If the remote breaks, working this thing could really bite if you are a "fiddler"/tweaker like me.

The manual kinda sucked - i mean basic hook up is easy, and they tell you how to navigate to the options, but they don't really tell you what the options do.

Anyway, great value and sound for the $. If i didn't have a full HT system i'd be jealous as hell!!!

the kenwood XD-A81 has really nice and clean sound with very low distortion.the bass is real big when the subs volume is at its max,and the master volume at the middle.some features are the dual side firing 6" subwoofersthat are powerd by 100 watts a channel.the main speakers are 6" woofers also and have two tweeters that are powerd by 100 watts a channel.at 40-14khz and 0.9%THD.this mini hifi component system is worth it.i got mine at sears for $379 but the only thing thats wrong with this system is that it has major air turbulance,(port nose) not a good thing.they should have took the time to build flred ports.you can also use as a home theater with the surround sound speaker inputs and the dvd player input.

The best minisystem that I have seen. I tried many but nothing compares to the sound and especially the bass. It is amazing! Too bad it is discontinued. At least I got mine!

Strength:

loudness, bass, clear midrange for a mini-system

Weakness:

bass level don't scale with volume control well

Well, for a minisystem, I thought that this system is the best. No, it doesn't have the clarity or imaging as more expensive components, but for a minisystem, it sounds great. Treble is not dry and sharp, midrange is not muddy and bass is not excessively boomy.

I can be very critical about sound because I own high end loudspeakers (B&W CDM1s) and a Velodyne subwoofer. But I needed something for college but won't get jacked at the same time. I looked at many executive systems, but they don't play louded enough nor do they have enough bass. The ones that have outboard bass modules are really boomy. Trying to add tons of bass at the same time of making them small and cute. Doesn't work--just like Bose. But executive systems are nice if you listen to orchestral music or popular music. I listen to all sorts, including Hip Hop/Rap so an executive system is not for me.

Lately, I think that minisystem quality has really gone down. Nothing really sounds good anymore. Buying a good minisystem these days seems like rummaging through the garbage. I guess that getting a new minisystem is getting one that doesn't have a lot of flaws. This Kenwood doesn't have any sound flaws. But the sound is not "high end", but they can't be a flaw because this is a mass market item.
