Strength:

looks, looks, looks...err that's about it

Weakness:

sound, picture, sub-woofer,... etc.

this is utterly poor - the sleek looks disguise a cheap interior. Go for a seperate dvd and speaker set up any day. Probably the biggest con i've seen this year - don't get it
IT'S LUCKY TO GET ONE STAR!

Strength:

size, power(for its size), price and I guess color.

Weakness:

Binding for speaker wires in the back sucks!!

After using this product for about a month now, I think the price you pay for it is worth it. There are some minor flaws that Sony could fix. For example, the bindings in the back of the reciever for the speaker wires suck. I really hated the way Sony made the different connectors for the reciever end of the speaker wire. First of all, what if the supplied wire gets jacked up in the future?? Do we special order new ones?? I hate it, get rid of it!! I think this Sony is ideal for small living rooms, or the bedroom for digital people(men). When I bought this system, the sales guy told me this system can not be compared to my system in my living room because of its size. The power on it is okay but could use a few extra watts here and there. Using it is one of its good points. The system is actully very easy to use and perfect for those non-digital people(usually women) who just like simplicity.

Strength:

Improved sound quantity. CDR/CDRW compatible. Easy to set up. Picture quality.

Weakness:

Buttons on remote too small.

This review is actually for the new 2001 5 disc changer model DAV-C700. For those of you who's been complaining about the sound quality of the DAVS300, this is a major improvement when playing CD or listening to the radio. The 5 disc changer model has a total power of 350 watts, up from 180 watts in the DAVS300. The design of the DAV-C700 also looks better, and it can also play CDR/CDRW discs as well. This model can play multi-channel Super Audio CD (SACD) as well, but at this stage I don't think anyone care due to limited selection.

The remote control has been redesigned as well. Instead of the flip up remote, all buttons are now on top. However, this change makes the buttons so small that makes it sometimes hard to use. Labels for the buttons are also too small to read.

I have sold my DAVS300 and purchased this one, and I'm really glad of the upgrade. I think other people who owns the DAVS300 or planning to buy one should look at this model or the single disc model DAV-S500 and compare the sound quality.

Strength:

Small unit, good picture, reasonable amp

Weakness:

speakers, connections, sub

I brought this unit as I am short on space in my living room, and I had to have an av amp, cd player, dvd player and radio that would fit into one video recorder sized space. The DAV is very easy to set-up, and initialy sounds great, but soon as you start turning up the the problems start appearing. The satalite speakers have no midrange, the sub can't handle bass very well, so any effect laden movie (like the lobby scene in the matrix) sounds crap at high volumes (anything over 1/3 of max vol). After changing the left and right speakers to the ones from my hifi, which are reasonable 3 way speakers, the difference in sound was amazing, you can acutally hear the music in the lobby scene, rather than a sea of muddy bass! I have now replaced all six speakers with the mission cinema 6 pack (£300) and the system has been transformed into a proper home hifi/cinema. While I agree that the cd player doesn't keep up with proper cd players, it is a dvd player and one that doesn't have a seperate music laser like some of the more expensive ones, so what do you expect!

Second gripe is the poor number (and type) of connectors on the back of the DAV. There is just two pairs of RCA input connectors, no s-video or scart. Also the s-video output of the box will not output the composite signal, you need to use the composite monitor output, meaning that if you want to use the DAV for video in/out you have to connect both the s-video and the composite to your tv, comsuming two sockets! Also the second audio in sockets are of poorer quality that the first set, and are only really suitable for a games console.

Picture quality is excellent for an s-video connection, but doesn't compare to a scart RGB dvd player, the colour seperation is not as good. This is likley to be the limitations of the s-video format.

I would recommend the sony dav, but make sure you budget another £250 to £350 for speakers!

Strength:

IT LOOKS LIKE IT SHOULD PERFORM BETTER

Weakness:

SOUND? VOLUME?

I was seriously starting to think about the home theater sound that I wanted to get for our apt. So I started to look around and I found the sony dav s300 and looked for the best price possible in stores. I went to best buy and finally got the chance to listen to this system. Talk about DISSAPOINTED, after all the reviews, all the hyped on this system, all the anticipation, what a bunch of hog wash! I turned it on and had it down low and then began to turn it up....I could not believe my ears, finally I had the volume up all the way and it just was not enough power, it wasn't even loud. People buy this systems simply because of the name, SONY. I hope you go to listen first and make your choice. I bought the KENWOOD HTB 504 with 600 watts of power for hundreds less. Thoroughly satisfied. The sony dav s300 simply does not have enough power, even the sub woofer is not powered, it is just another speaker. So bottom line, before you go out and buy anything, forget about the name and the reputation, ignore the sales person for a minute turn it on and ask your self, is this the sound I want? Does it make you smile when you listen to it? When you turn it up, are you still smiling? I did not smile. :(

Strength:

1. Nice design
2. Easy set-up
3. Everything needed is included

Weakness:

1. Sound
2. Sound
3. Sound

I had this product for at least 5 months now and was impressed from the start. For a compact machine, it kicks some nice sounds for a small studio apartment. My first problem came in 2 weeks after I had gotten it. All of the sound was fixed on one speaker, the left front speaker. I had it reparied and waited for 2 weeks. Once it was shipped back to me, everything was fine. Just today, it happened again. I had not only lost the sound but had lost it in all the speakers. I can't believe that this is the second time for this to happen. I will have to send it in for repairs again. I am very disappointed now and wouldn't recommend it. I would suggest going to dedicated components.

Strength:

Compact size, price, value

Weakness:

Speaker connections limiting the use of speakers to those that come with the package.

This Sony combo is a very interesting device with a DVD/CD player, 5 channel amplifier/processor, with DD, DTS, ProLogic capability and comes complete with a 5 satelite speakers and a subwoofer, all in a package that is extremely easy to install.
The DVD player has a good quality, and the sound is ok, much better than your average TV sound, with real excitement. Of course it is not the last word in A/V performance but for the price it's value is very high.
