Strength:

Easy to use. Complete package.

Weakness:

There are better A/V systems but at a higher price

An all in one package with Dolby Digital and DTS capability, an excelent DVD player, and a competent 5+1 channel amplifier, that comes with all the speakers needed, for a good home cinema system. Well made Sony.

Strength:

Great Remote, Easy set up, Compact, Clean looks

Weakness:

Soft sound, useage limited to very small rooms

Set up is so simple anyone can do this without reading the manual. Color coded wires and speakers, everything is clearly labelled.

Great multi unit remote, nice flip up feature to control lesser but important controls. Can be programmed for almost any TV.

Great picture... plays most DVD's with no problems (it has hiccuped when switching scenes on some DVD's).

I liked the players ability to auto select the best audio decoding, from Dolby 5.1, DTS (etc.). The bit rate display is hip as well.

Use only in small areas (like a bedroom) I have mine set up around the bed and the gain is not always sufficient.

Beware of switching from DVD to FM (only 1 volume setting), so if you were watching a soft/dialog type DVD and switched to FM (you might be blown away).

Sound is too soft on some DVD's. The amp section has some problems accurately reproducing heavy bass passages.

For less than $100 more the Panasonic offers...
5 disc changer
Amplified sub woofer
10 bit DAC

The trade offs appear to be just the remote. I am planning evaluate the Panasonic in comparison with the DAV-300.

Strength:

Compact, Easy to setup and use, excellent picture and sound, quality built.

Weakness:

Some of the sound modes (hall, jazz club) produce too much echo when playing some CD's and listening to radio.

The DAV-S300 is great all in one DVD system featuring DVD and AM/FM Tuner built in and connections for hooking up your VCR. Combining both Dolby Digital and DTS Decoders it is an ideal system for anyone who wants to get into DVD with 5.1 sound without having to spend thousands to do so or the hassles of matching components. Sound and picture quality are excellent and comparible with much higher priced systems. The 5x30w satellites and 30w passive subwoofer provide more than adequate grunt in a midsize loungeroom, but the effect may be lost in a large room. This system is great for watching DVD's with action scenes really coming to life. Whilst the DAV-S300 may not be everything to the audiophile, it will keep the average person who just wants to watch DVD's and listen to there favourite CD's more than happy. Go get one!!!

Strength:

Excellent for a starter system when strapped for cash or a great second setup for bedroom. Very impressive sound coming from such a small system. All satellites keep up great.

Weakness:

Subwoofer could have more balls but sounds great considering it's smaller than eight inches. Remote could be back-lit. Could have more control and features on dvd. Such as zoom and foward or rewind speed should be faster than X2.

Setup and install was a breeze. Instructions are clear and easy to understand. The size of the system is perfect for just about anywhere. This system is going to be a keeper around my house. No regrets for buying the system. I found the price was even better when looking around e-commerce and auctions. I paid 520.00 instead of 599.00 at most retail outlets.

Strength:

Small Footprint and lots of features for the buck. Great amazing sound. small footprint!

Weakness:

DVD sounds alot quieter then the Radio hummm...?? Not enough Inputs.

I have been reading everything I could get my hands on about this system, and FINALLY I when ahead and bought it. I never made such a great purchase in my life. it only cost my 580 bucks and it came with everything i needed to watch DVD's, listen to CD's, listen to the Radio,(watch cable TV in surround sound and play my PLAYSTATION in 5.1). This thing does everything!!! Its sooo easy to setup also. Basically plug and play and your done, yes you can fine tweak it but if your in a rush to watch your new DVD out the box it still sounds and looks GREAT! The next day i purchased MONSTER A/V cords and an S-Video cord! WOW~ that's all i can say!! The Radio function sounds WONDERFUL too bad i cant say the same about it when watching DVDs or Listening to CD's.. I wonder if it uses some of the amps power when rotating the DISCs??? But DVD's still sound great, you just have to turn it up a bit more. I also purchased SANUS speaker stands .. they work and look amazing, i could tell the difference in the sound after using these speaker stands... u have to find a heavy speaker stand for the Subwoofer if you're going to use it on carpet. This system is so small yet you get a whole lot of sound and picture quality! It's no wonder SONY is such a great company. I used to have to listen and watch movies on such a HUGE component system, now all of it is in one sleek silve casing! This system shines on my SONY 27inch Television. If your looking for Home Theater system that outputs highly decent Sound and Picture for under a Grand buy this system with the SONY KV-27S42 27 inch TV and I guarantee you wont find anything better for the price!

The few complaints i have for this system is the the lack of inputs and why Does the Radio sound sooo much better then DVDs?? i bought this system for the DVD player not the Radio. But i still LOVE this System.

Strength:

Very good price, complete system(5.1,DTS), compact(player, decoder and amplifier all in one) and easy to install.

Weakness:

Not very powerful, can't read CD-R, no coaxial and optical input/output.

A complete Home Theater System for a great price. Nice design and compact. The speakers are very small and easy to hide. The system isn't very powerful but it isn't a problem in a small room (my room is 4x5m and it sounds great but I tryed in a larger one and I had some problems). They aren't coaxial output so if I want to upgrade the sound system I'll need to buy a new DVD player.

Strength:

Price, sleek looks

Weakness:

Sound, picture, connections, power, etc...

I bought this unit from Best Buy (ugh!) for only 475, this is because they screwed up my original purchase of a tv and said that I could get a brand new one for a discount. They then tried to sucker me into buying that extended warranty, no way!

Anyway, I took the unit home and was very unimpressed with the sound. For the price, it does its job, but I'd rather spend more money and get a unit that produces better sound, but not one from best buy. (I don't know if any one else has noticed, but best buy only sells the crappy line of products)

Maybe I'll post a comment about the DD/DTS system I decide to go with. If you're looking for a small system that will get you the sound effects from the right directions (rear, center, etc.), this is a decent system, if you looking to get good sound, look elsewhere.
