Absolutely the biggest piece of junk I've ever purchased. Every tape I own squeals when attempting to be played. After years of frustration and absolutely no response from Denon, I finally just purchased a 20 year old Sansui deck for $15.00. Low and behold, every tape plays beautifully. I have no idea how Denon got their reputation for quality. The DRM-740 is a light weight piece of junk. Run, do not walk, away from Denon as fast as you can.

Strength:

3 Head Architecture -- very accurate recording and playback.

This has been a great tape deck, and I have no complaints. Very reliable. To this day my wife uses it to make great recordings. I definitely recommend it!

Strength:

Clean analog sound; 3-head performance and utility

Weakness:

eject mechanism (the button) is a bit clunky; could use a pitch control.

I've had two of these for nearly five years now. They are workhorses, and I concur with the others that older tapes made on other decks sound superb - as good or better than the originals! Tape handling is excellent, although the eject functionality could be better done (I *loved* the old Akai power loading and eject mechanism! Given that this deck almost always replaces another, a pitch control would have been a nice touch, but whatever...

Since purchasing this deck in 1997, I have not had a bit of trouble. Very full imaging in an analog way--sounding like cd''s. This has been an excellent replacement for my 1984 model NAKIMICHI-BX125, which eventually wore out after two motor replacements. This makes excellent recordings, best of all it plays back old tapes [made from LP or CD] & transfers to CD each with dynamic imaging better than the original sometimes will produce. Great deck for under $400.

Good mid-level deck. I previously owned an old Onkyo deck which, to my ear, duplicated a CD exactly as far as dynamics from bass to highs. The Denon matches it in every way, so I consider that excellent.

I have had no problems with this deck and it plays tapes beautifully. It also records just as well.

I don't do much tape listening, but the pre-recorded material that I have listened to on this deck sounds quite neutral. I primarily use my 740 for recording compact discs and am very pleased with the sound quality of the recordings. The only other deck that I found with this level of features for the money was a Sony. I went with the Denon because I felt that it had a little better build quality and that the controls were laid out better. I honestly could not tell much of a difference in sound quality between the two, but since my main concern was making recordings, the Denon pulled slightly ahead.

DENON DRM-740 is a single deck with 3-head system and closed-loop dual capstan/3-motor transport. This deck features Dolby B & C noise reduction and Dolby Pro-HX. At its retail $400 this deck gives value to users. Sound quality is great, clear and clean high (even though the hiss still there because of recording not the deck), and tight and deep bass. Also, the deck gives users detail when no other tape deck at its price range can. Recommended!

Strength:

Clear highs, good base

Bought this unit to replace Nakamichi BX-2 that I have had for years. Had the BX-2 repaired - idler wheel azimuth adjustment. Sounded good but not good enough. Bought the 740 and sound are great. Though head phones it is difficult to tell the source from the tape using Maxell MX. If you want a good analog tape machine this is it.
