Strength:

Great clean sound- can get loud.

Weakness:

Little breakup at high volumes- otherwise great.

I like them. They are pretty good speakers for the size. You can''t expect "bass" out of such small drivers. I added a 8in sub and it sounds great. They are great for what they are intended to do. Very clean and crisp with only a little breakup at high volumes. The midbass is great and with a little eq-ing they can be dialed in right to your style.

Strength:

This is the best two-speaker computer sound system I have ever heard. They take up little room on my desk, and the headphone on front is a "must-have" feature for me.

Weakness:

Con: No on-off switch, no bass or treble controls.

I have been a Bose nut since I bought my first pair of Bose speakers in 1978. Even my car has a Bose sound system. So when it came time to replace my three-unit Labtec computer speakers, I was delighted to find the Bose Mediamates. I hardly ever play games on my computer. My computer speakers are for music and TV from my TV card while I work in my home office. So I did not seek gaming speakers. Gamers will probably not like the relative lack of bass presence in the Bose speakers compared to almost any three- or five- speaker system. But for music and such, the Bose speakers have quite enough bass response, with excellent highs and midrange as well. Even so, I would like to be able to fine-tune the relative bass-treble output, so controls for them would be nice. I make do with the equalizer in Winamp, which helps. Even more disappointing is that there is no of-off switch. That switch sure was handy on my Labtecs when the phone rang. Now I have to clumsily manipulate Win 98''s desktop volume control/muting icon, or turn the volume knob to far-low. Frustrating! Overall, though, the Mediamates sound superb. Their small size is great and so is their sound. When I play a DVD in my computer, it''s like having a small home theater because the speakers have excellent imaging. These are fine speakers from the premier speaker maker in America!

Strength:

Brilliant midrange, small size, simple controls

Weakness:

Muddied high end and unsatisfying bass compared to larger speakers, clumsy power supply

These speakers are definitely good quality for the size and price. The midrange is incredible on these little beasts. The top end is certainly a little drier than expected, however. The bass, although AMAZINGLY punchy and filling coming from 2.5" drivers, simply cannot compare to some of the larger multimedia towers. The power supply is kooky and ungainly, but since it comes with a 12' (or so) power cord, it's not of large concern.

Two dials on the front of the speaker control volume and the mix between the two stereo RCA inputs on the back. There is also a front headphone jack for easy access.

Overall, an excellent speaker for the price (roughly $130) for delivering above average all-around computer-use performance. But it won't make you shake violently when playing 3D games. 5 Stars for the midrange and price. 4 Stars for the lack of high end and bass.

I bought these speaker couple of years ago and love them immensely. I feel that these speakers are too good for computers, so I use them to listen to music most of the time.

Lack of power, bass, treble...

I have to say I am shocked. I realize there are so many Bose-hating reviewers here on Audio Review, yet not one has anything to say about the Mediamates. I own the AM5 home speakers, and think they're okay. Not great, not awful, but okay. Maybe a bit overpriced for what they are, but I digress. Back to the Mediamates.

Having worked in PC retail for 8 years, I have had the opportunity to hear virtually every PC speaker in the industry. Aside from some awful offerings from the no-name brands, along with one particular pair whose name I can't remember from Panasonic, these are terrible - especially for the $150+ price tag.

At a time when 4 point speakers were becoming tremendously popular, Bose released these and the AM5s for PCs. And there was not a single set of quality speakers from $40 up that did not outperform the Mediamates. Forget about 4 point surround or any other features. Overall sound quality from these was awful for game playing or serious music listening.

If you are looking for good computer speakers, look at any of the Logitechs for low prices, or just get any of the Altec Lansings - especially the models with wooden subwoofers.

Pass on this Bose offering. Also, years ago, Bose promised to be replacing the AM5 and Mediamates with some new entries in the PC world - we are all still waiting, I guess...

Strength:

Great sound, powerfull lows, dual inputs with mixing

Weakness:

when played loud the high and mids get cut out completely by the bass real anoying

If you are planning on listening to this speaker at a low volume it is excelent great lows for its size and crisp clear highs and mids. But as soon as these things get turned up you will want to turn down the bass on your sound card or you will loose almost all musical quality. But once this is done they still manage to sound decent. I love these speakers for my listening and recomend them to anybody looking for gaming speakers or for a musical speaker for Mp3's. A great feature is the two inputs and their mix function when playing games i sometimes hook up my CD player and match the volumes with the mix control that works great!!

Strength:

Sound quality

Weakness:

Price

I have been continually impressed with these speakers. One reviewer hear noted deterioration at high volumes. With my Mac's sound card I an only stand them to a certain point. They were designed for you to have them sitting in front of you with your pc. They are not even a bookshelf speaker so naturally they will have loss at some point. If need a lot of volume, you need bigger speakers. I think they dynamic range is great. I have an 200 s.f. office and they very adequately fill the room at a comfortable volume.

I bought mine for editing digital audio files and have not experienced any problems with regards to hearing what I want to hear.

The Bose Mediamate Computer Speaker system is a pair of small speakers based on the "jewel cube" speakers with vent ports in the front. The Sound quality of this system is excellent, it has essentially replaced my 250 dollar JVC UX-A4 system. The speakers are 22cm high, but the bass these things pump out is absolutly amazing, I can feel it 12 feet away on the other side of my room when it's only 1/8 of it's possible volume. The speakers have one "master" speaker where you plug in 1 or two sources and another "slave" that you only connect to the master. The highs on this system are decent, but have this feeling of being cut short, and the mid-range is excellent. My only complaint is that the soundfield is really small, you have to perfectly angle them for thier sweet spot, but after that, it's pure bliss. I give it 4 stars because the highs which one can't live without. In conclusion, a excellent value for anybody who is sick of listening to thier cheesy Labtec speakers and wants a great, cheap system.

They're back! And in new colors, like Ice Blue and Indigo as well as the original Computer Gray. And the price is much lower, only $119 a pair everywhere I've seen them, most recently on www.bose.com

I've had mine for about 3 years, they still work and sound great, a little travel-worn (they go in my suitcase when I travel for a week or more)

These little speakers sound great, especially when hooked up to a CD player or MP3 player, and the dual inputs let you hear the computer at the same time.
