Strength:

Lots of features for the money.

Weakness:

Poor quality testing.

For the life of me, I don't understand why I had such lousy luck with this component. I had two delivered from 800.com. The first one didn't work from the start. Tray wouldn't open, stuck in Standby mode no matter how many times I hit the power button or anything else I tried. The second one worked for about a week and then stopped mid-CD and never worked again. The player would read the CD and then tell me NO DISK. 800.com of course took them back, no hassles but I cannot believe I got two lousy players by chance. I'm trying some other brand.

Got this player for $69.00 For the life of me I don't understand why anyone would pay hundreds for a cd player when this is available. Sounds fantastic!!! I guess that's why I'm a casual listener and not an audiophile....HUH? If you need an inexpensive good sounding player, this is one

This CD player can't beat for the price. I got mine for $69. The sound is excellent when used with quality interconnects.

I purchased this player recently for $69.95, after seeing the price rise to as high as 90 bucks following the review in The $ensible Sound. I hooked it up with cables that cost nearly twice as much as the player, put some Dh Labs pads under it, and enjoyed beautiful music for three hours. It's not the last word in transparency or resolution, and the highs do seem a little thickened, but the soundstaging is excellent, as are bass, midrange, and overall musicality. For its price, you'd have to have rocks in your head to say this isn't a worthy player for spinning CDs. Five stars

This is a very good CD Player. The price is great too. I got mine for $71.99 (US). The sound is clear and it has some extra functions that make it better. I think it would be hard to find another 5-CD Player this good for a better price.

Strength:

PRICE -> 79.99 on June 30, 1999 @ Best Buy. I know these things because I tape the receipter to the top of the components after purchase. I think every one should do this.

Weakness:

I can't seem to find any universal remote that will controll this cd player. I find some that will controll the Sony STRDE325 SAMSUNG VR8706 and GE TV but not the cd playe at the same time. IF any one knows of one that will please contact me at voice mail,8772543843 or email, tommyrobertson@ureach.com

I think every one else's reviewes can speak for me.

For a casual listener, you cannot beat the RCA unit for both price and features. I purchased the unit at Best Buy for $89.00.

The unit has all the bells and whistles that most listeners will ever use and some which they won't...the unit also allows you to change discs without interrupting the current disc that is playing.

Obviously, this unit is not for the serious audiophile-but for most people, this unit delivers at an bargain basement price.

My rating is based within the category of player.

Strength:

Sound quality and price.

Weakness:

Strobe lights on front and cheap connecting cables.

Haven't had this unit too long, but so far so good. Wards has it for 49.99 with rebate which is a real steal. Would like to hear from someone who could verify that the Admiral is in fact the same unit as the RCA. The unit is rather light and on the surface you would think it couldn't stack up to the big boys like Denon, Yamaha, etc.. but for the money it sounds pretty darn close. I replaced an old single Sony CD player and this has much clearer sound, the old Sony sounded more muffled. You can't go wrong for the money.

I own an Admiral model #67219 which looks identical to the RCA model. Could anyone verify that it is the same unit? The front is absolutely identical and it is made under the Admiral name for Wards exclusively. There previuos model was made by Funai so I know they are just private labeling someone elses product.

I bought this changer at Best Buy for $79.99, based on a favorable mention in The Sensible Sound and the good reviews here. It wasn't the absolute cheapest (there was a Symphonic for $59.99 and a Philips/Magnavox for $69.99. But the RCA was clearly the best built of all the cheapies on display (and beat some of the more expensive models). And it was one of the few with a headphone outlet (those Best Buy clerks sure look at you funny when you walk in with your own cans and CDs.) Remarkable how you can but a changer these days for the price of a portable. Guess we have to thank the Chinese for that, as long as they don't start World War III.
The sound straight out of the box had me worried... it was hashy and bright, bright BRIGHT! But every component needs time to break in, so I turned the treble down and ran it almost constantly for two days. The highs have settled down considerably and it sounds a little better each day I play it.

And it does sound very, very good. It makes my old Marantz CD-52, which cost four times as much about five years ago, sound like absolute mush. The RCA presents a good, open soundstage, with tight bass and good definition throughout the range. The highs are still a little bright but I think that'll be less of a problem as they break in. Plus I live in a very reflective high-rise apartment which tends to give all my sources a boost in the lower treble.
The unit itself is very quiet mechanically, which just a little thump as it changes disks.

Now here's my biggest complaint about the changer: it's the shuffle play feature. With five discs loaded it has the annoying habit of playing the same disc two cuts in a row. After an hour of listening I would expect to have heard all the discs at least once. But invariably I've heard one disc three or four times during that span, and one disc not at all. I'm sure this is a feature Mr. Cierniak at The Sensible Sound doesn't use much. Being a classical music lover he wouldn't be mixing movements. But for a pop/rock/jazz fan like myself the "randomization" software is bothering me. The question is whether it's bothering me enough to return the changer, and buy one of equal quality that's bound to be considerably more expensive (probably a Sony or Yamaha).

So in terms of sound quality this changer is everything they say it is. If the shuffle play problem doesn't bother you, you'd be crazy to pay more. And your friends laugh at you for buying an RCA changer, either cover to logo with black tape or find yourself some new friends.

Four stars.
