Strength:

Outstanding sound reproduction particularly when you consider the price. Beautiful wood finish and overall craftsmenship.

Weakness:

12" sub is too large...8" sub has weak bass output...satellite speakers are too large (awkward) for wall or ceiling placement

I purchased the Edge Audio 5.1 system with 8" sub back in May of 2001. Since the subwoofer was back-ordered I initially listened to just two of the satelite speakers in a music only setup. I used the Edge speakers with a tube amp and the sound was excellent...particularly with vocals...the midrange on these speakers was extremely clean. They lack deep bass sound, but these speakers rivaled any small bookshelf type speakers I had ever heard. I would strongly recommend to anyone looking to fill a small room with bookshelf speakers. Given the price of about $190 per speaker, its an incredible value.

After about 2 months of listening to music in this setup, the 8" sub, finally arrived. I quickly hooked the Edge speakers up to my Denon 3300 receiver and popped in a DVD. Overall, the sound was excellent in home theatre environment. The center speaker provided outstanding dialogue. I was very pleased with the overall balance of the speakers in home theatre mode. My only disapointment was that the sub did not provide enough bass sound...so I turned up the sub volume to the max position. The bass improved but was not giving me the "rumbling" sound that is required when watching action packed movies. After a couple of weeks on listening I realized that I would never be satisfied with the bass output from the 8" sub. So I ordered the 12" sub.

After receiving the 12" sub...all it took was a couple of seconds of realizing that that was all I was missing from my setup. The 12" sub really rocks! It provides incredible bass reproduction with ZERO distortion. I keep the bass volume on low and it still provides tight deep bass sounds! I was extremeley impressed. My only complaint with the 12" bass is that its MASSIVE. Its like a 24" cube...too intrusive for many home setups.

My only other complaint witht the Edge Audio speakers is that the satellite speakers are a little too big and heavy to be mounted with wall brackets. In my small living room setup, I required the satellite speakers be wall mounted. After searching for brackets that would be strong enough to handle these speakers, I felt they would stick out too far from the wall and be too noticeable in my smallish room.

Overall, I felt the Edge Audio speakers were the best sounding speakers out of everything I listened too under $2000. I highly recommend these speakers for a home theatre setup and or just as bookshelf speaker usage for music.

Strength:

Musical, Spacious, Detailed and a Real Bargain!

Weakness:

None.

This little speaker is incredible. Imaging, detail, musicality, warmth... forgive me, it's all real. I too was very skeptical about this speaker, no more. I find myself transfixed by the sound and engaged, as a result, in "CD listening" binges.

The company, however, is now called Aperion Audio and the staff are excellent. It matches up with Tubes very well, but it does eat the juice...(not very efficient) This may be the only speaker system you'll ever need or want. Maybe not...

Give it a listen.

Strength:

brings out the mid range in classical music and bring the musicians into our home

Weakness:

placed in the wrong location they can sound small

As remarked on by others, our speakers came well-packed and in a timely manner after we ordered them on-line directly from Edge Audio. Our first impression was that they were unexpectedly small, the speakers being smaller than the ones from our old and very unsatisfactory "mini-all-in-one" system from Panasonic. After unpacking the speakers and hooking up only the stereo part of the surround system (with sub-woofer), we spent a lot of time moving them around our large, cathedral-ceiling living room, looking for optimal placement. When they are properly set-up their sound quality is amazingly real and live. When they are placed improperly, we found them to sound "small". Being classical music fans and musicians, we enjoyed hearing inner and lower ranges that we know are there but have not heard in our recordings previously. This was the primary reason we were looking for an upgrade to our system, and these speakers do a fine job. We think these speakers compare very favorably with the Boston Acoustics VR965s we test-listened in the store at a price that gives you an entire 5.1 surround system for almost the same price as a single VR965 speaker. Given that we do not watch movies very often, we took advantage of the quality of the rear speakers (=identical to the front ones) to use these speakers as an additional stereo-pair for the kitchen/dining area. Now we have wonderful sound throughout the house. We found the BT7 wall mounts well-built, sturdy, and too industrial looking for even our modern house and thus returned those. But we are keeping the speakers!!!

Strength:

Great looking. Excellent value. Handle H/T and musical well. Amazing clarity and separation even at high volumes.

Weakness:

Range of bass - not surprising at this size. Get a good sub.

Haven't quite broken them in yet, but I've been so pleased with what I hear so far, I don't think I'm jumping the gun when I say that these little guys can rock !
First, let me say that the folks at EdgeAudio are very helpful, and nice. Center channel came in damaged (they really should offer faster UPS shipping as standard, 5 days is way too much time for something to go wrong), but they sent a replacement and picked up the old one quickly - thanks John.
The look and touch of these speakers sings QUALITY. My wife loves them. Musically (which is where I thought they would fall short) they are amazing. I'm listening via a recently purchased Denon 3801 (had the Outlaw1050 but returned it for lack of features, specifically 5.1 stereo) and the sound is lushy, but still has punch, yes, punch. I set the mains to large and assigned bass to both woofer and mains, the Edge handled the sound and bass so well I've left them at this setting. The S38s are nice but the midrange was a little in your face, and the Polks are just way too bright. The Edge, however, have a subtle presence. They won't fatigue your ears and don't get in the way of the music. Not suprising, the H/T experience has been fun. With matching speakers all around getting the right mix was no problem and placement was never really an issue. I didn't get the Edge sub (have the JBL-PB12) so I can't comment on it, but coupled with a good sub and H/T receiver these speakers will not disappoint.

Strength:

Excellent overall sound. Awesome for home theater. Good customer service. Nice looking. Subwoofer is excellent.

Weakness:

Have to turn up volume on the receiver in 2 channel stereo mode, but thats to be expected for non-floorstanding speakers.

I am thoroughly impressed with these (I purchased the 5.1 setup). Before purchasing I looked at reviews on this site as well as Sound & Vision, and several other online publications. All had great things to say about the speakers especially considering the cost <$1500. I decided to try them out and I will definitely be keeping them. The only complaints I've seen online have been about the subwoofer- but that has recently changed. They now have a higher rated 12" subwoofer (250W continuous RMS). It puts out way more bass than I need for my viewing area and still is not distracting.

Strength:

great sound, great build, great looks, great price

Weakness:

built in mounting bracket nut is too small, plus it's not even mentioned in the manual.

I've had the 5.1 system for about 5 months and really like it. Part of the reason I decided to go with Edge is that I just couldn't step into another sound room at a stereo store. They can make those speakers all sound great and they start feeding you all typed of BS that doesn't really matter. I read a couple of review of this system, and they sounded interesting. I wanted to stay under $1500, and these fit the bill.

Five months later, I still haven't seen anything that comes close to these at the price. The build is superb. Others have mentioned the packaging, velbet bags, etc -- so I won't go into it, but it's a nice way to start ownership.

I hooked them up to my Denon 3801 via Monster reference Z cables. I figured they would be good for HT, but I have been very surprised by their music abilities. Very clean up to, and past, comfortable listening levels.

The 502s are good, but it's the SW12 that makes the system really rock. I haven't listened to the 502s without the sub, but I would imagine they would drop the base very early. Stick U 571 or Gladiator in your DVD and listed to the DTS version through this system. It shakes your whole house.

My only gripe was with mounting the surrounds. I contacted Edge before I bought them and asked about mounting. They suggested OmniMounts. Since the 502 weigh more than 10 pounds each, you have to use the mid-level Omnimounts, which uses a larger bolt than the 502 can take. Very frustrating since I was using the model that the Edge people told me to buy. I had to drill small pilot holes in the bottom on my surrounds so I could attach a mounting plate. And the manual says NOTHING about mounting these. BYW, I did buy the optional Lovan stands for the front. Quite nice.

Weakness:

Nada bass

My first impressions was that these speakers were sensational; the best thing to come around in inexpensive speakers in a decade, but I'd auditioned them in my home listening room. It has great acoustics. I moved them to a larger room and had to tweak the cables and the position to attain the same sound that I'd heard in my 'little' room.

The sound: very pure and silky, without much of the boxiness found in dynamic speakers. Vocals are great, but if you want any bass, forget it. It rolls off at 78db, which I guessed from my audition, but don't let this stop you from considering these guys.

I can't really praise these speakers enough for once again lowering the 'limbo' bar on high-end audio. They may be 'Hecho en Mexico', but they're All-American on sound.

The enclosure is made up of something called 'granola' wood or something similar, but it's very attractive and the finish is medium cherry. MacGregor used to make a golf driver of similar coloration and I always liked that finish.

These speakers sound great with the DHLabs or ZuCable cables!!

These guys take Home Theater to new levels when purchased in their $999 six speaker set!!

Don't listen to me. Go out and buy a pair. You won't regret it.

Weakness:

initial unit had crack on back

Amazing low price speakers! Intial unit from Amazon had crack on back. They paid UPS return fare and shipped new speakers even before I had chance to pack up damaged pair. Real hardwood with beautiful finish! Sound is really amazing. Unique crossover makes difference. Of course, really does need sub for bass extension. I use Def Tech 10 inch, 250 watt sub. Initially I used with old Pioneer 40 watt amp and was not happy. But, after burn in and using better Yamaha amp - whole world of difference. These guys rock! I have HT with 5 NHT super zeros and sub, and bought these for stereo use after my 20 yo Mirage SM-1's blew their woofers. I am very happy with this purchase!

Weakness:

sound "small" for music

i've been very impressed so far with the sound quality for movies, but for music i haven't been impressed, the sound seems "small", thats the only word i can use to describe it... this holds true for hard rock and for softer, folk-oriented recording, i have to switch my receiver to 5 channel stereo to get a fuller sound... the customer service is fabulous, instant response is the norm, with great attitudes displayed by their people, but i have to deduct a point for my feelings about its music capabilities

Strength:

FLEXIBLE...Work just as good with music as in the movie theatre setup. Appearance, Build and power handling.

Weakness:

None so far.....except deep bass but these are made to be used with a subwoofer.

I did my homework and comparisons. I bought this as a 5.1 setup. The systems i tried are all good systems but there was always a weekness that was hard to overlook or a price tag that was too hi. I bought these in cherry with the 8" sub. Like many, my expectations were exceeded. they are the best made speakers i have seen. the sound has worked with all my uses...DVD, CD, DBS, radio, over-the air TV, VHS. My Yamaha VX800 never sounded so good. they will handle all the power you feed them. The 8" sub will do all the things you need unless you have a very large space and/or you need "bass" like your car audio system or music that is "heavy-bass" dominated...then get the 12" sub. You can get the system and have 30 days to try it out hassle free (includes return shipping). Before getting anything, you must at leat try them...you deserve it.
