Strength:

Great sound (warmth, imaging & soundstage depth), beautiful design & finish, major power for small speaker.

Weakness:

None so far.

First things first! The price is for a Pair of 502L/R units. I actually bought mains, surrounds, center, and a 8"sub for just over $1,000 including shipping.

The buying experience was a breath of fresh air. After checking out the reviews here and browsing the EdgeAudio web site, I ordered the whole system. I received the order acknowledgement with order number almost immediately. Within 2 hours of their opening (Pacific Coast time) I received a shipping notice with a tracking number for the online UPS site.

The speakers arrived 5 days after shipping (just as Edge Audio said they would). The boxes were undamaged, but with the packaging job done by EA they could have been drop kicked across country without being damaged. The double boxing/styrofoam surrounds, plastic wrap and silk lined velvet bags made for a pleasant surprise.

The speakers are beautiful! The only thing better than the looks is the sound. I had recently auditioned a pair of Mirage M7's and fell in love with the sound. However, when I found the Edge Audio's and realized I could audition an entire 6 speaker system, risk free for 30 days for the same price as a pair of M7's I thought, why not? Boy, am I glad I did! Although the M7's sounded a bit more spacious, the imaging, tonal quality, and depth of the Edges were right there with the M7's. With this experience I can definitley say that the Edges perform as well as speakers 3-4 times the expense.

The only drawback I have seen is in the quality of the manual. I bought the system with the 8" subwoofer, and it would appear that the 12" model is the norm. The manual is written stricktly with the 12" model in mind. Although this would not seem to be a big deal, the 8"sub does not have all of the switches as the 12" model, so you are left to guess about the "standby" mode for 8" model and the crossover frequency settings.

I sent an e-mail to EA with some specific questions about set-up with my present receiver and a new one that was purchased but not yet received. Within an hour I received a detailed response from Ben F. which answered all of my questions. "I wish thes guys would branch out and make cars and TV's. It would sure make my life a lot easier.

My system:

SONY DVP S560D - DVD Player
Pioneer CLD-M301 - Lser Disc & 5 CD's player
TEAC - Reel-to-Reel Tape Deck (live recordings)
Pioneer - Dual Casette Recorder
SONY - GX69ES Receiver

Ordered: Sony STRV-333ES, SONY CDP-CX350 (300 disc changer)

The Bottom Line: If you are planning on upgrading speakers for stereo and Home Theater aplications, and can't afford to spend at least $2,500-$3,000 on the speakers, you're nuts if you don't try these. If you can't find the whole $1,055 (includes shipping) for the entire 6 speaker set, Start with the 2 mains @ $189 each and get hooked!

Strength:

Beautiful, economical, musical, detailed, yet comfortable. These are all-around great speakers!

Weakness:

Hmmm... for the price, power consumption and size, I really can't think of any.

First, I'd like to rave about the Audioreview staff.... I posted a request to have the EdgeAudio speakers & subs reviewed and they were added within 24 hrs. I wish my WebMasters were that quick.

I took the plunge after reading a bit online and placed an order for the 7.1 system about a month ago. Normally, I would complain about the fact that the sub took over three weeks to arrive (Christmas backlog). Since, however, the EdgeAudio staff was so helpful, personable and communacative, I'll let it slide. They also sent components as they got them, instead of waiting until the whole order was complete. I received my first five speakers almost three weeks ago. The sub and last two only arrived a few days ago. Since this review area is dedicated to the 502Ds and not the sub, I can pass alonng what I've found.

I tested the 502s with the following:

-Denon 3801 receiver
-Technics DVD-A10 DVD-Audio
-Sunfire MKII Sub (I also tested the Edge 12" sub for a few days)

Service:
Excellent. These people make you feellike they want your business. Their amicable nature and professional courtesy was a welcomed exception to the uninterested corporate cogs and/or sleazy snake-oil salesmen that I'm accustomed to dealing with.

Look and Feel:
These things are beautiful. I have no problem putting them on display. Though they are small and unobtrusive, this is A/V equipment I don't mind displaying.

Quality control:
It's apparent from looking at these things that Edge takes pride in their work. I did, however, have one speaker that was improperly assembled. As it was for the surround backs in my 7.1 setup, I haven't felt rushed enough to call Edge's support about it. I'm sure, however, that they'll send one out ASAP. My feeling is that it was a minor glitch do to the hand-assembled nature of the product... no biggie.

Value:
It's amazing that these are in the same price range as Bose/Klipsh, etc. These things are solid. Best of all, they sound great.

H-T Sound:

I demoed a number of DVDs on this system. The sound was subperb. They sounded like big speakers... they gave off big sound. They got along well with my Sunfire MK II, but I had to fidget with the sub for quite a bit to make a nice "fit."

With the volume of my Denon 3801 turned near capacity and a very loud scene, the smaller size of the Edge's was noticeable. Being accostomed to big B&Ws, I was initially a bit let down that they sounded like small speakers at really high volumes for scenes like the T-Rex attack in Jurassic Park. This problem was, however, easily fixed by adjusting my Denon to treat the 502s as small speakers. This adjustment seemed a bit unfair as the 502s handled just about everything else that my H-T system threw at it. I decided that I would only adjust them to be "small" speakers when I'm turning the volume all the way up for very loud movies.

An added bonus of these speakers is that they are accurate a low volumes. Now I can enjoy DVDs late at night, while the fiancee is asleep.

Music Sound:

These speakers did not dissappoint. They're accurate and very comfortable... especially for a small speaker. Unfortunateley, as I'm still experimenting with my Denon 3801 I haven't yet mastered features like properly adjusting stereo mode so that LF is passed to the sub. I'm still tweaking... I can say, however, that this feature sounded beautiful with my Sony STR-DA777ES. Also, DVD-Audio sounded subperb with this system. My DVD-A10 and these guys get along well together. They're spacious, especially for their size.

Overall, these guys are musical. I'm not an audiophile, though I have spent time audiotioning some pretty good systems and I can tell you that these are a joy to listen to.

Summary:

In summation, yes, I've heard better speakers. Better speakers have, however, cost several times as much, required more power to sound good and were significantly larger.

EdgeAudio are genuine audiophile speakers at deparment store prices. These speakers sound good, look good and are sold by good people.

Did I mention that these are fun to listen to?

Strength:

Wide open natural soundstage. Accurate reproduction. Takes all 200 watts per channel from Sony StrDa77ES.

Weakness:

none!

In the years I have been chasing good sound in my home I have learned some valuable lessons.
1. Big speakers are not better than small speakers based on size alone.
2. Great speakers will sound like crap if not driven with quality electronics and conversely fair speakers will sound good when driven with great electronics.
3. The strongest link in sound reproduction in any home setup is the electronics, period.
4. Great small speakers coupled with a good sub will outperform any large speaker, period.
I have been using the Sony 777 for about 8 months and continue to fall in love with it the more I listen to it.
I have had many speakers hooked up to it and they all sound good. However after spending $1,000 for a receiver and $500 for a Klipsch sub I wanted great sound. On a whim I ordered the EDGE speakers from Amazon after reading the reviews here and the reviews in the various mags. Edgeaudio.com has alot of info but you can buy for a few bucks less from Amazon. I just hooked the front edge speakers up and although I know they will get better with breakin I am blown away. They sound bigger than the Infinitys I had hooked up and are 1/4 the size. They do not distort in any way and at high levels of power just sound like little atom bombs reproducing without a hitch. Which brings me to my last rule. Great speakers do not need to be expensive. These speakers retail for about $160 a piece and I could not imagine a marginal difference at $1600 a piece. Edge offers a free 30 day in-home trial so what have you got to lose. If your electronics are in order, order them today. You will not be sorry. One other thing, I ordered them in light cherry and they are absolutely beautiful to look at.
Construction quality is tops. I give these speakers a 5-5-5-5-5-5-.

Strength:

price, craftsmanship, size and tremendous tweet and mid-range sound. also, customer service is outstanding!

Weakness:

for a speaker in this price range and size, nothing. bass response is not great, but a properly calibrated sub fills in very nicely.

the price noted includes an onkly 797, 5 speakers and the 12" sub. first and foremost, the customer service is awesome! they are very knowledgeable about their product, other products and hook ups. would another company spend an hour on the phone explaining the hook up, what connections are needed and tell you that the cabling they sell is really expensive and you can get monster for less? i doubt it and ben fowler is a tremendous assest to aperion. now, the sound--astounding for the price i paid and the size of the speakers. these are about the size of a shoe box, they weigh 11lbs and are beautiful looking. they are really quite dynamic and sound crisp and clear with great highs and mids. bass output is not real low, but if the sub is set properly it is seamless in transition and offers great sound quality. i was going to buy the m&k system or b&w sytem that was as about $2000 for speakers only until i read the reviews and figured i had nothing to lose by trying aperion. i sure am glad i gave these folks a try. they are true to their word on returns also, as i returned the onkyo 696 for the 797 and also returend some mounting brackets. on returns you give them a call, they fax you the pre-paid return slip, you slap it on the package and drop it off. it is rare these days to deal with folks that exceed your expectations in both product and service, but the crew at aperion did just that and i am very happy with the entire experience! my system: onkyo 797, toshiba hi-def tv, toshiba 5700 progressive scan dvd, sony 200 disc player and hughes dss with 5.1 aperion and 12 in sub (which buy the way, knocks the paint off the walls). i will give them a 5 for the class of speakers they are in; they are obviously not a 5 if comparing to b&w nautilus, but that is not a fair comparison. enjoy!

Strength:

Great imaging for a small speaker; as time goes on, the usable bass goes down to about 60 Hz.

Weakness:

Caneira wood is subject to cracking under certain conditions; bass isn't the end all.

This speaker does sound different with different amps and pre-amps. The cable does make a difference.

This is a follow up posting to my first impression. I now use these speakers in my 'travelling' system in lieu of just a CD player. I still use the CD player, but now I connect it directly to a Monarchy SM-70 amp and the two Edge Audio speakers. I use 5' DHLabs Silver Sonic cable with homebrew terminations as the speakers wires. This cable is very detailed, yet inexpensive (apx $1.80/ft). The CD player can be any inexpensive Aiwa, Sony, etc. portable.

The result is a heart stopping, ear pleasing trip into audio nirvana. I'm really amazed at the music that comes out of this system.

If you really want experience great music on the road, I also suggest purchasing a few CDs from the Mapleshade catalog (www.mapleshade.com). Try his Whitman's sampler of finger-popping tunes and soulful melodies on the 'Mapleshade Festival' CD ($7.50). Trust me, you'll never go back to your old ways.

seamless surround sound and and great localization on all types of music. superb finish on the cabinets including the subwoofer

hi quality furniture type finish with real wood. small size blends into room decor easily. i am using 5 512d in a surroundsystem and the sound is totally seamless.the 8 inch sub w/150 watts is perfect for my room size about 12x16 movies like star trek insurrection lost in space and t2 all on dvd sound better than great. i auditioned several surround systems in listening rooms around the ny city area and this beat all hands down. the price is well within reason for five surrounds and a sub $999 and free shipping plus no tax!

aside from the quality and the sound the service and support were superb, the best online shopping experience for any major purchase i have ever made. the best part when you call with a question real people answer the phone, no menus to navigate.

Musical, involving, Beautifully designed, a tremendous bargain!

Weakness:

NONE.

This is a posting for the new company Aperion (formerly Edge Audio)

This little speaker is incredible. Imaging, detail, musicality, warmth... forgive me, it's all real. I too was very skeptical about this speaker, no more. I find myself transfixed by the sound and engaged, as a result, in "CD listening" binges.

The staff at Aperion are excellent. The speakers matche up with Tubes very well, but it does eat the juice...(not very efficient) This may be the only speaker system you'll ever need or want though. Maybe not...

Give it a listen.

Strength:

Full, rich, seemless sound. 12" sub-woofer drives the system.Solid wood enclosures, enhance the sound and room. This is a beautiful piece of furniture in its' own rite. I am running through a RCA HDTV 39" 16:9 tube, RCA Progressive Scan DVD, and Directv Satelitte with optical sound cables. The sound is incredible. Better than the theater because there is no crackling noises from the film, etc.Craftsmanship is superb right down to the flexible gold connectors.

Weakness:

None that mean anything. Setting on speaker stands is precarious if you have small children or wild animals. Suggest mounting with small screw into enclosure.

This is absolutely the best product on the market in it's price class. You can spend $4-$6000 or more on big name (audiophile)systems and not get any truer reproduction. The human ear can't detect it! I would recommend these to anyone that is serious about their surround sound. Have used for 3-4 months.

They do it all extremely well. Music, movies take your pick and be as impressed as I have been.

After going through Polk and PSB Image speakers I have finally found my Nirvana. Bought a 5.1 setup with an 8" sub and have my perfect system. If someone could show me a better sounding system for the same amount I would gladly give them my present 5.1 system as a "finders fee" bonus.

Where is the sound stage? The entire room is now the sound stage.

Don't let the small size of the center fool you either. This speaker handles anything it is given. It made my previous other 2 center speakers sound like cheap boxes. (Polk CS 300, PSB 9C)

I have the 5.1 setup matched with a front pair of Triangle Titus speakers and the Aperion speakers are the PERFECT match for the Triangles. The imaging comes from everywhere in the room. No way to tell that the music or movie comes from a small speaker like this.

I bought the sub-8 only because I live overseas and had no choice. (max postal weight restrictions) Really skeptical about the small sub performance after reading some of the reviews about it. Hooked it up and honestly wasn't impressed. However, purchased a new sub cable and my worries went away immediately! People, spend a few bucs like I did and things change! Now the sub (and my house) rocks!

My system:
Denon 4800 Reciver
ADCOM 5400 Amp for front 2 channels
Denon 2500 DVD/CD Player
Aperion 5.1 system with 8" sub
Triangle Titus front speakers

I will leave you with 1 more comment. I am stationed on a military base in Japan. Our postal code is APO AP 96319. A lot of businesses will not ship to us because they use UPS or they are just ignorant of the fact that we do have a Post Office. When I originally placed the order I was turned down. After some persuading and education, Ben F at Aperion Audio made a special shipment of the 5.1 system to my post office box. Ben F you get a special thanks for helping a guy out. 2 THUMBS UP!

Go out a buy a set today. You will NOT be disappointed!

Strength:

They really are as good as you have read in all these reviews

Weakness:

no let downs here

I am one of those people that spends 2 months talking to people and reading reviews before I purchase something. I use to buy lower quality items just to find out that it does not do what I want it to do ,So now i really try to learn as much as I can about a product before I buy so that I will not waste money .because I always end up with the better product anyways.
I bought the 5.1 system and i am pleased with it. I do have concerns with the the sub that I purchased and it is due to the lack of bass for my size of room ,but I wanted to try the 8" first. After talking with the guys at edge audio they agreed to go ahead and send me the 12" sub for the difference of the 8" . they are going to go ahead and send it and later this week send the ups guy to my house to pick up the 8". I have been totally happy with the service that I have received with these guys.
I am not going to compare them to the ones that I have listened to in stores. I think it would be unfair to edge audio ,because in a good sound room a set of cheap speakers can still sound pretty good until you get them home. Let me put my edge audio in sound room and I bet they would compare to speakers costing 2 to 3 times as much and I honestly believe that.
If you are in the market of a good system just give the guys a try you wont be disappointed ,Just make sure you have a good receiver. When I first got mine I had a denon avr 1200 adn that receiver did not do these speakers any justice. I bought a new one from outlaw audio "which is another company that only deals on the net" and have been really happy.
So for $999.00 for speakers and $499.00 for a receiver you get a system that rocks.

good luck
