B&W DM303 Bookshelf Speakers

B&W DM303 Bookshelf Speakers

DESCRIPTION

The tweeter uses tapering tube loading, first used in the original Nautilus. This ensures far greater absorption of unwanted radiation away from the rear of the diaphragm and results in a cleaner, more focussed and natural high frequency sound. The bass/midrange driver uses a cone of woven glass fibre, which functions in a similar fashion to Kevlar. The crossover components use air core inductors for lowest distortion and plastic film capacitors for minimal signal degradation. The front baffle is moulded in inert micra filled polypropylene, which has a subtly curved outline and is dimpled to echo the theme of Flowport at the back; itself elegantly combined with easy-access terminal panel that can accept all common terminations.

Strength:

Sweet highs, good volume (ie you can turn em up loud) The sonus fabers go no where near as loud,

Weakness:

Less detail than some No very 3d, but great for what they are, a budget speaker.

damn what a difference! The sound is more pure exciting and involving. The silver maestro is also a good cable and only a bit less good than the Q10. The q10 provided slightly more bass and soundstage, but for the difference in money between the two, not really worth it, especially with my system. Finally I now know waht was bugging me for the last year. Cambridge audio interconnects. I have also used the black ones (about £60)and they were no better.

Strength:

Good punchy bass, smooth sound

Weakness:

Sounds Blanketed, and uninvolving

Ok, first thing first, my system: I think this is one of the most important things to mention when reviewing a product. I've found the most useful reviews give their system specs, after all the speaker will sound very different with different systems. Amp: NAD C350 Source: Marantz CD6000ose Ki sig Interconnects:Cambridge Audio Pacific (yellow ones) Cables: Mordaunt-Short silver maestro With this system I couldn't get over the need to hear a more open sound. The 303's have very little immersion factor whereby one can sit down and sink into the music. I listen mostly to electronic music such as Kruder and Dorfmeister, electro jazz, Trip Hop and also Hip Hop and Drum and Bass. Cafe Del Mar is also a favortite of mine. My problem was that I could not get any real enjoyment or life out of the music. I think a previous reviewer put its perfectly in non personal terms" not overly pronounced, and imaging quite good. I still couldn't hear any depth from even these speakers though. Great spacious sound (here I dont agree, but that may be due to my music choice and the NAD amp which is quite but warm) just no front to back. The 303s didn't quite dissappear either. The sound seemed to be coming from the speaker area. I didn't hear much extension beyond the speakers outside of the triangle. No sounds came from extreme right or left past the speaker area. I was having a problem with depth on the 303s" All in all I did not find then involving. I'm hoping that some DH labs BLII interconnects and Q10 speaker cable will give them a new lease of life, maybe open them up a bit. I have a feeling the amp might be to blame, but I'm having that tweaked in Switzerland by an affiliate of Rowen, a swiss audio company. This differenece to the NAD is incredible, more open mid range and better highs. Will write an other review when I have tried these upgrades.

Strength:

Amazing low end from a 6" woofer. Amazing overall sound from a "$300" speaker!!

Weakness:

Some may not like the crisp high end, however, i love it.

These speakers are great. First of all, they offer much more bass than the other bookshelf speakers that I auditioned. They are accurate to a rather high volume, and the titanium tweeter offers a great crisp high. Overall, great for the price!

Strength:

Outstanding value!!

Weakness:

picky about cable choices, but that could be good. tune it to your liking

I got a pair of these for my bedroom on the recomendation of a friend and what can I say but WOW! These do not sound like a $300 pair of speakers! Imaging is great, as expected from B&W, and they throw a wide soundstage. More bass than I expected also. my only gripe with them is they are very cable sensitive. DH-Labs T-14 does the trick though, smooth treble and tight bass.

Strength:

Sound is fantastic.

Weakness:

None that I know of.

I use the 303's for rear speakers in a home theater. What a difference the upgrade has made! These are great little speakers at a great price. Don't waste money on expensive home theatre speakers - just get 5 of these.

I just got these two months ago to complement my CDM 7's and my new CDM Center channel. These cheap babies are so great that I am not sure the far more expensive CDM series speakers that I have were worth their original cost. I am telling my brother just to get the 303s and the 300 series center channel. They sound great, and their value is excellent. After spending on DVD players and speakers and cables, I am not convinced that spending extra money on audio equipment results in a significant marginal sound quality benefit. The law of diminishing returns seems to kick in early. These speakers are great. Period.

Strength:

Strength:

Beautiful maple cabinet. Crisp accurate highs. Very sweet midrange. 3D soundstage. Deep bass, beyond what you'd expect from a bookshelf speaker.

Weakness:

Hard to find. B&W is no longer available at Sound Advice.

I bought these speakers for my media room. They are connected to an old Kenwood 9030 AV receiver, and Im using a Toshiba DVD player SD-2700 as a CD player. I was amazed at how clear the highs were and how much bass these speakers put out for their size. I am a salesman at Sound Advice and I have heard the best there is. For the money these are the best speakers I have ever bought. I dont know any other speaker in the 200-300 dollar price range that could even come close to this kind of sound. I own a full Martin Logan surround system, I know what to expect from a speaker, and these little B&W's sound much better than I expected. I heard them first at our in house mini CES show. They were connected to a Krell amp. This was about a year ago. I remember the rep saying these new speakers were 1,000 dollars each, and I believed him. Then he played a drum solo from a CD, which sounded like the drums were in the room and you could point to the different parts of the drum set as the drummer moved around the kit. Total 3D soundstage. Then the rep laughed and said "actually these are the new B&W DM303 speakers which sell for 149.95 each". I was impressed so much that a year later Here I am raving about MY PURCHASE!
