B&W DM303 Bookshelf Speakers

B&W DM303 Bookshelf Speakers

DESCRIPTION

The tweeter uses tapering tube loading, first used in the original Nautilus. This ensures far greater absorption of unwanted radiation away from the rear of the diaphragm and results in a cleaner, more focussed and natural high frequency sound. The bass/midrange driver uses a cone of woven glass fibre, which functions in a similar fashion to Kevlar. The crossover components use air core inductors for lowest distortion and plastic film capacitors for minimal signal degradation. The front baffle is moulded in inert micra filled polypropylene, which has a subtly curved outline and is dimpled to echo the theme of Flowport at the back; itself elegantly combined with easy-access terminal panel that can accept all common terminations.

Strength:

The way they blend so well with my Sub. and make my whole system sooo sweet.

Weakness:

Not a single one.

I recently purchased a pair of Paradigm Mini Monitors for my fronts and was running Polk Audio R-10's in the rears. Well I listened to it like this for about a week and I knew that something was missing. So off I went to the pro shop in Bezerkely to see if I could get a pair to match my Mini Monitors at a resonable price. I tried out these little gems and I tell you they are the best book shelves you can get for the money. The sound is great. Mids and highs are clear and crisp. If you have a Subwoofer like I do (Velodyne)no meet to worry about bass. Great in HT. The amazing thing is how all your cd's sound sooo much better, I have to re-listen to them all. Get these and enjoy! Peace

Strength:

The sound is dynamic and doesn't have the feeling of being restricted or covered by a blanket (like a lot of its competitors).

Weakness:

It is not palpable. To feel the music I got the B&W subwoofer. Relative to its better more expensive brothers it has a grain or roughness to it's sound.

The best for the price. If you are on a penny pinching budget, i.e. spending the least amount on a system, this speaker will perform like no other. I strongly recomend you give it a try. It actually has depth, clear midrange, tight bass (that actually extends lower than you'd think), dynamic, and the tone is very flat from top to bottom. I'm always tempted to buy a separate amp like the B&K 260 to get all I can out these speakers. This is a big improvement to the old 300 series. I have both the 303 and the LCR3, and people are always impressed with how good my hometheater system sounds. Movies are very clear and dynamic. The rest of my system: -CDMNT stands -B&W ASW 500 woofer -LCR 3 center channel -monster cable Z series for both interconnects and speakers wire -Integra 6.2 reciever (the Lexus of Onkyo) -Onkyo CD player With proper stands (metal, sand filled) and proper placement (good distance around the speaker) lower midrange and voices are very clear. After it breaks in, over a month of play, beautiful and accurate harmonics start to come out . For critical listening I take the covers off.

Strength:

Detail and midrange. Good for classical music and ambient chilled music.

Weakness:

lack of bass, slightly lifeless-lacks feeling. Bad for rock/D&B/Hip Hop.

Good speaker, but lacks enjoyable bass. Brings out the mid-range at the expense of getting an overal impression of the whole song. Nice, detailed, but at times lifeless.

sound stage, mid bass, sweet tweeter, solid construction, nice looks,B&W sends you a nice key chain when you register on the web

Weakness:

Took about a month before either my ears got adjusted or the speakers broke in

I must say that I have bought equiptment on the advice of some of the reviews on this website and was very sorry i did.I was going to buy B&W 602.5 towers when I saw the 303''s noway can these satisfy my search for midfi nirvana. But for $520 I can get the LCR3 and a pair of 303''s.So I bite,At first I thought I made a mistake,Now I don''t know if there is any truth to the break in thing or not but after about a month of playing these I am astounded the sound stage is rock solid the bass is articulate.I am hearing thing in my recordings I have never heard before.I am using these with a denon 1801 reciever and pioneer elite 100 disk changer and Athena P-2 subwoofer.I have debated putting these 303''s at the rear and still getting the 602.5''s.But after listing to the 303''s I don''t see the need.I think I will put my money into a power amp instead.Do yourself a favor and try these out they are not going to beat out speakers costing thousands of dollars.BUT they will come close

Strength:

Ability to play "music" far above what you would expect from their modest price.

Weakness:

None, unless you need mega-bass, or have a lame amp/receiver

These speakers are "musical"! Have owned speakers costing four times as much, but have never been able to ''just listen'' to the music as with these guys. Incredible sweet highs with better than expected bass makes an incredible combo with my Jolida tubed amp, and Rega cd player! These speakers should be put on quality stands, that are 28-30 inches high to get the right sound, but other than that they sound good without having to be in some ridiculous "sweet" spot. These speakers sounded great even at the dealer with an ordinary receiver. Spend your money on a better amp and give these boys a listen.

Strength:

Sounds awesome for the price. Has got to be the best sounding bookshelf for it''s size and price. Cabinet is sound.

Weakness:

However vinyl finish, but all the money is in the crossover and drivers.

I can''t believe that I actually bought the Bose 301''s first. I am totally sold on B&W sound. The Price may be a little high on the better stuff, but if you got the money spend it. I can here instruments in the music that I did not know was there. I am using this for my rear set in the HT. I did consider this first as my mains, but the 602 S3 sounded much better but cost me twice as much. I think if you are looking for speakers, you owe it to yourself to audition these wonderfull sounding speakers, that is if you are on a budget. You will not regret it.

Strength:

Clarity, imaging, good bass for their size

Weakness:

A little more bass would be nice but my God it''s a feaking bookshelf!!!

I have only had these guys for a few days now but I decided to write an out of the box summary and then follow it up in a few months with another review. I gotta say out of the box, I am very impressed with this speaker!!! The term bang for the buck doesn''t even do them justice. For the money, they are about the best bargain around IMO. Vocals are smooth and precise, and guitar tracks scream with detail. The bass response for a speaker this size is amazing as well, where yuo never get the feeling that your missing something while listening. Don''t get me wrong, a sub with these guys is the only way to go, but if a sub is out of reach for a while, you won''t be dissapointed. So in closing, I again will highly reccomend the 303s and cannot wait to break these babies in.

* Fairly natural sound
* Better Bass than DM 302
* Good value for money

* Need a good subwoofer to enjoy these
* Midrange is not that mellow and sometimes highs sound harsh (DM 302 has much better midrange and silky highs)
* Sounds more like a commercial speaker

Strength:

off axis sound, mids, build quality, highs, price

Weakness:

Will not play real loud

First of all these speakers need a lot of break in time - several weeks at minimum. I am always somewhat skeptical of manufacturers that claim their products need long break in times, but I am starting to believe it - with speakers anyway. Seriously, these did not sound very good out of the box and now, after several months use, I am amazed how great they sound every time I turn them on.

Second, like any speaker this size, stands and placement matter. I use mine in a large bedroom. They are about six feet apart, the front baffle about 20" inches from the rear wall and nine feet or so to my listening position. The speakers are pointed straight ahead with zero toe-in. I have tried the speakers with various amplifiers and the speakers are easily good enough to reveal differences between them. With these speakers I highly recommend going for quality power over quanity of power.

I think one of this speakers greatest strengths is its midrange. Male voices have none of that chestiness or boxiness common with so many speakers.

I also really appreciate how great these speakers sound anywhere in the room. Even way off axis one can hear everything. A pleasant change from my main speakers which sound lousy if I do not sit in the sweet spot. This is probably partly due at least to the 303's higher order cross over. My experience is that often higher order cross overs trade off better dispersion for less convincing soundstage but I find B&W's sound stage to be above average. Not awe inspiring, but very good.

The highs are extended without being etchy and the bass, while not the last word in playing low, has fantastic slam.

The build quality is really something - for any priced speaker but remarkable for the price.

The one thing this babies will NOT do is play loud. Another reason for quality over quanity of power. At levels not all that loud they start to sound congested and muddy. They will play folk, jazz, and small scale classical at realistic volumes but these would not be my choice if I listened mainly to rock and roll or hip hop (consider the similar priced Missions for loud music).

If you have ever wondered what the the audiophile world is about but thought it had to be expensive - these speakers could open up a new world. Compare these to some boom and sizzle 3 way speakers and you'll hear the difference. The 303's recreate music and the boomer and sizzlers sound like well, speakers - fake, removed, processed.

I give these speakers a 5 for both value and overall rating.

Strength:

Impressive sound for such low cost

Weakness:

It IS a small speaker, so not much at the price..

This was a gift for my parents, and they needed replacement bookshelf speakers. I first listened to the Phase Technology 4.5T very nice for $260. Then the B&W DM303 played and stole the show for only a couple of bucks more. I set them up at my parents house and right out of the box the sound was great! Much more than $300. These have an Aluminum Tweeter
and I thought they would sound harsh..Metal tweeters do this..I was surprised. What a great value. Two Pair would make a great HT setup for not many$$$, add a sub and bingo..
Try them you might just like them.
