Strength:

Way too many to list. The sounds coming out of these bookshelfs are so natural, and they can handle so much sound with absolutely no distortion whatsoever. I had to get up and make sure that I was truly listening to the bookshelfs rather than the Tower speakers behind them. Like Ed says, Audiophile sound for budget price!

Weakness:

A weakness? Hahaha. Not after the EFE modifications.

Simply stunning. Two words to describe the auditory overload I've just experienced via the man himself, Ed Frias and his EFE-modified DV62si speakers. But first, some background on how this came to be: As a college student, I'm particularly frugal, but I take pride in having good taste. I get my kicks by researching and finding products whose quality far surpasses the going price - Which is exactly what happened when I decided to go and find a pair of bookshelf speakers for my apartment. After browsing AR.com, as well as many other internet audio websites, I was nearly convinced to go out and buy a pair of Paradigm monitors or PSB or whatever other Big Name speaker happened to be for sale at a great price. By chance, I fell upon reviews for this little Ed Frias-modified BIC speaker, and was immediately intrigued. Big speaker sound for little price? Sounded too good to be true. I also learned that Ed lived right down the freeway from me in San Diego, so I just had to hear the speakers in person. A few emails and phone calls later, and my appointment with Mr. Frias soon arrived. He led me to his listening room (the sight of which is just about as impressive as the sound), and we began to demo the "more extensively modified" 62si's. And I was astounded. The first thing that strikes you is the range on these little speakers, these go down LOW. I was sure that at some point it would bottom out and begin to distort, but that point NEVER CAME. The accuracy is unbelievable. Flaws in recording are immediately noticeable due to the incredible clarity of the speakers. Ed mentioned that he carefully tunes each speaker he builds to the natural sound of live instruments, and I believe him. Instrumentals were simply pure and flawless. The night before the audition, I spent a good hour at Tweeter, listening to every bookshelf speaker they had ($150-$800) and I have to say not a single one could even begin to touch what I had heard at Ed's house. The speakers at Tweeter, well, sounded like speakers. Ed's were audibly clearer, more accurate & balanced, and reached lower than any bookshelf I've ever heard. To top it off, Ed Frias is a warm fellow, who's heart is as good as his ears. There was no doubt in my mind: I had to leave his house with a pair of these speakers. I haven't personally heard the un-modified BIC, but I don't really want to. All I know

need crossover fix

I bought mine before I had met or known about Ed Frias I based my decision on Consumer Reports high rating. Well, my pair are harsh on high tones and bass can be kind of 'canned'. The most current Consuer Repoorts downgraded this BIC on these very same issues as Ed pointed out on this review some weeks after I bought new. Well, I put them in as rear speakers displaced by my Audio Review DIY speakers that I bought AFTER I personally met and auditioned with Ed and his speakers. Some time in the near future I will have Ed fix my crossovers!!

ED FRIAS IS THE BEST...HE HAS HELPED ME TIME AND TIME AGAIN. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT STEREOS/SPEAKERS AND HE WAS VERY PATIENT AND EXTREMELY HELPFUL. THESE SPEAKERS SOUND GREAT, AND THE PRICE CANNOT BE BEAT. MORE IMPORTANTLY, ED'S KINDNESS, KNOWLEDGE AND CUSTOMER SUPPORT ARE WHAT HAVE REALLY MADE ME A SATISFIED CUSTOMER.

Strength:

Relative low price with good sounds

Weakness:

May need Mr. Ed Frias modification for max performance

Just hook them up with yamaha receiver and Onkyo CD player. The sound is good. I am very happy about the speakers for two months. I am not sure I should send them to Mr. Ed Frias to do the modification since it was suggested by many people from this site.

Audiophile quality speakers for $250!

Weakness:

My receiver.

I would like to reiterate what so many reviewers on this website have stated about Mr. Ed Frias. He is knowledgeable, reliable, and a serious audio enthusiast. I am not an audiophile but I do have a discerning ear and can appreciate quality sound. I purchased the "extensively modified" 62si's from Ed and couldn't be more satisfied. The speakers produce a well rounded sound and are crystal clear at all volumes. I am not familiar enough with the audio terminology to be any more specific about the sound. However, I did test several bookshelf speakers before deciding to go with the BIC's and these little black boxes sound as good as or better than $700 - $1000 speakers. I feel fortunate to have found Ed and may be going back to him soon for a center channel speaker and another pair of 62si's.

Strength:

Probably the best 1000 dollar pair of speakers in the world, and they sell for $250.

Weakness:

my amp, but I'm putting all the money I saved toward a good one.

I decided to upgrade my stereo equipment about 5 years ago and am just now getting around to it. That tells you how much of an audiophile I am, but I'm learning. A friend gave me an oldie but goodie Sony A/V receiver last year when he upgraded, so I had that part at least partially taken care of. The first piece of quality gear that I wanted to buy were speakers, especially the main pair. I have been following this site and others for reviews for a long time now, and reading about the DV62si's modified by Ed Frias really put the hook in me. These meet all of my criteria: small, full range, high quality, and affordable. Seems like an easy formula right? I contacted Ed Frias directly when I realized he lived just down the freeway. We e-mailed back and forth and finally set up a meeting at his house. I was pretty much decided that I wanted the fully-modified version of the DV62si before I got there, so I had the cashier's check already made out but I didn't let Ed know. Once there, he already had my speakers wired up to a beefy ATI amp in his studio. He auditioned them for a little over an hour. I could go on about the imaging and range and sheer brute force of these speakers, but I'll spare you. I'll just say that they do EVERYTHING and do it well. They sounded better than any speakers I have auditioned, bookshelf or not. High volume, low volume, huge range, imaging... They excel everywhere. That's all I know to say. I gladly thanked Ed and took these guys home and hooked them up right away. Even with a mid-range cheesy Japanese amp, they sound incredible. It's like my whole CD collection is new again. Stanton Moore's "All Kooked Out" has even more appreciation as a modern Jazz masterpiece. Willie Nelson's battered guitar and voice box cry through the whole house. The Boston Philharmonic rings with the fullness of an Italian opera house. Even old Parliament recordings turn my living room into a stage full of alien freaks. The best 250 dollars I could ever spend on entertainment. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Strength:

most impressed with the Addattos DV52si indoor outdoor, small, cheap and powerful. good response, great bass and mid range. perfect for movies

Weakness:

a little bright. Have to lower the trebble when not using optical connections (maybe the receivers fault)

After reading the reviews on Audioreview.com and having been disappointed with an all in one box set from Harmon Kardon (kept the AV120 receiver) I purchased the DV62s for the front (160) the 52 center channel $35 from UBID (the 62 was too big for the tv) the indoor out door Addatto 52si for the rear and the dr1010 10" 160 watt sub. The system is really awesome hard to believe the whole set was only $500 and I think it sounds better than my brother's Bose Accoustamass 10. Looking in to getting the cross-overs tweaked since I hear from the reviews it makes an even bigger difference.

Strength:

Nice full range, natural sounding midrange and crisp highs. Great rear speakers for my Dolby Digital surround system.

Weakness:

Still lacking bass, but what do you expect from the small cabinet size? Buy a nice subwoofer!

I''ve had the DV62si speakers for about 6 months and am very happy with them. I had been reading about all the people that let Ed Frias from EFE Technology do a modification to the crossovers. I always wondered if he could make a $130 pair of speakers sound that much better. Well, last week I sent my crossovers to Ed and a $30 money order to cover the mods and shipping back to me. I got them back today, and after listening for nearly four hours, I realized I have a new set of speakers!!! I am shocked by the increased range that these now have. I didn''t realize how much range my DV62si speakers were lacking before the modification. I also cannot believe that the technical people at BIC America don''t hear the difference Ed makes with these. They''ve become true audiophile speakers for under $200/pair.

I have a pair that have been serving duty as surround speakers and would have to agree with others that they are not quite right out of the box. So I decided to tinker a bit. What I did is too disconnect the tweeters, turn them up-side down and add a pair of Radio Shack 360 degree Lineaum tweeter modules[minus the ugly "cages"]. For cross-overs, I used the R.S. generaic 2-way units designed for 8 ohm transducers. Since the measured impedience of the Lineaum tweers is 6.2 ohms and the Bic woofers is 6.5 ohms, I connected the tweeters to the 4K terminals and the woofer to the 2K terminals. This works out to a first-order X-over in the 2700 Hz. range. This worked-out to a marriage made in heaven, something of a rarity in my experience of speaker "tinkering". The results are amazing and these units have replaced my Mission 701''s as my primary listening speakers. There is only a slight "sizzle" on the high-hats which I believe a dampening resistor on the tweeters would take care of nicely. Anyone that would care to recommend a value for the resistor would be much appriecated. Thanks

Strength:

Low price, well built and sounds fantastic.

Weakness:

Sounds great out-of-the-box, but sounds incredible after Ed Frias fixes the x-over.

I own several types of BIC speakers all of which sounded harsh and unnatural out-of-the-box, and all of which I let Ed Frias modify. Of all the BIC speakers I''ve heard, the DV62si is the least offensive before modification. In fact I actually thought they sounded pretty good without any mods. Nevertheless I sent the crossovers to Ed for adjustment, and as expected the difference in quality is impressive. These speakers now sound incredible! Crystal clear without any harshness. The midrange is also clean and very life-like. As with any bookshelf speaker no matter how expensive, their isn''t a whole lot of deep bass, but for their size the DV62si does an admirable job of handling it. A good subwoofer is needed if you want the really deep stuff though. These are great speakers that I highly recommend. I also highly recommend that you let Ed Frias adjust the crossovers. Even with the small additional cost for mods these speakers are a bargain!
