Too Inexpensive!!!

I bought two pairs of these speakers from ubid a few months ago and I am very happy to see for the first time the craftmanship of these speakers. At first I thought they used a thin MDF board with quite cheap components but they are heavy and well made. After trying themout the first time with my VSX-37TX receiver, wow!!! I said to myself that my hard earned money was well spent. I did notice some missing refinement on these speakers though, some distortion on high volume levels. I discovered upon opening one of them that there was one missing vital component and that was some "padding". They didn't come with acoustic fiber insulation. That may be the reason of their low price. I also noticed the cross-over network and they used resistors instead of the old fashion heavy-wound coils and large capacitors, but I don't think I'd be able to hear the difference though, with my not so good ears. I thought of trying different combination on the cross-overs but the sound is just balanced, to emphasize a certain range of frequency might kill their mystic. What I eventually did was I insulated the interior of the box with speaker foams to tame the distortion, and after finishing the experiment I noticed a lot of improvement on how they sound, they were almost twice as good now, they even handle higher level of power with ease and grace, I love these speakers!

I have three sets of these speakers, as well as three sets of other BIC speakers (of them, the DV736 really stands out).

Obviously, I think these are good speakers for the money. But a while back, when I was poking around AudioReview (what a great site, huh?), I came upon a review by a man named Ed Frias.

He stated that these speakers had a design flaw and had been much better in years past. He offered to fix the speakers for a small fee and send them back with greatly improved sound.

I was very curious, so I gave it a shot, thinking that, at the very least, I'd get back a slightly better speaker.

I was wrong.

What I got back was a new speaker. I compared them side-by-side with a pair that weren't fixed, and the differences are astonishing. What is slightly fuzzy and muted on the stock pair is crisp and lively on the pair Ed fixed for me.

After much listening, I found punchier bass, clearer vocals, and missing midrange.

What's more, the turnaround on the fix was really fast. I can't recommend this fix enough. If you really want to see what these speakers can do, send them (or just the crossovers, easy to remove and install) to Ed.

Strength:

Outstanding performance in all applicationsand an absolute bargain on Ubid. Very stylish appearance. BIC customer service is probably the best I've ever experienced - EVER.

Weakness:

ZERO

Originally purchased the BIC dv62CLR for center channel speaker and was so pleased with performance I purchased a pair of dv62si speakers for $54 each on Ubid when they came up. I threw in a token low bid when they came up again on Ubid, and won't even tell you how much I "stole" the second pair for. I have two speakers, stacked (gives me the tower effect I really wanted with awesome sound) on each side of my Mitsubishi 35" TV, and they look like they were made for each other. Then I "stole" a pair of dv52si speakers that I'm using in the rear of my home theatre setup. As soon as the BIC powered sub is available at a reasonable price (not necessarily a steal) I plan to get it and replace my Cambridge Soundworks powered sub, which seems to pop unmercifully during big explosions and other action scenes with real heavy base. As a caution for anyone purchasing these from Ubid for home theatre applications: they are NOT video shielded as advertised. If you put them within six inches of the TV screen you'll get color distortions in the corners - magentas and chartreuses on a Mitsubishi set. BIC customer service helped me solve the problem almost without any hesitation.

Strength:

Excellent highs, good midrange, surprising lows....

Weakness:

None for the price....

These speakers are great. The highs and midrange sound exceptional and there is decent bass. I auditioned some Infinity and Polk Audio bookshelfs close to the same specs as the BICs. The BICs sounded better than the Polks and on par to the Infinitys(this is my opinion, anyway....). I found out about these speakers at a little hole in the wall Hi-Fi store and ended up spending $160 for them(you can get them cheaper from Ubid...), but I still think I got a great bargain. In fact, I was so impressed, I decided to buy an entire home theatre setup consisting entirely of BIC speakers!

DV62si (fronts)
DV32 (rears)
DV53CLR (center)
D1210R (200 watt 12" sub)

I was able to purchase the above for $599 and it sounds great. I highly recommend the DV62si bookshelfs and all of the other speakers I listed.

Strength:

Clear highs, clean rich bass (design engineer claims it will go down to 43Hz's), good mids. (Brother to DV62CLR, one of the best center channel speaker).

Weakness:

nothing so far.... its got 7 years parts and labor!!! abuse it, but don't blow it!

In short: "MOTHER OF ALL SPEAKER". Get any speaker in its class and compare it with this little monster (6" woofer, 3/4" soft dome tweeter) inclosed in a 14 1/4"H x 8 7/8W x 9 1/8 D Box and you will find a noticable difference in sound quality, and it won't blow you wallet. It can handle upto 175 watts of power. I never tested it over 70% of my 110watts JVC VBK 8000 receiver. My room will not support music louder than that.

Visit www.bicamerica.com for more details (Bee Eye cee stands for British Industry Corporation)

I got these speakers for 105$ Pair delivered to my door steps through ubid.com. I liked it soo much that i brought it for my rear channel speakers too.

Movies: I tested these speakers for my Mission Impossible, Matrix, and Fight club DVD to name a few for the HT performance: 5 Stars

Rock: I tested it on my MLTR, GNR and bryan adams cds, i would feel bryan performing in my room (well not exactly) but it passed this test too. 4.99 Stars, and 5 stars with a subwoofer... u know what i mean.

Then i tested it on my techno collection ( Alice DJ, sonique, etc), i can give it 100's of stars for its performance... clear clean, fantastic music, worth every penny. 5 Stars.

The speakers look shabby in picture, but actually they look great in reality. its got clean light black polished finish, and has venture written in the front. 5 Stars

Different people like different kind of music, and some will settel for less, and some might need more, but i find these speaker for a soft rock and techno lover (like me) a very good choice, and very affordable for HT (If brought throgh UBID).

If i would have the seen a demo of this speaker, i would have paid 160$ pair on shop.yahoo.com and setteled for Dv52si for rears, but without any demo, and only by its reviews, and 62clr center channel speaker performance, i got it for 105$ pair through ubid, and when i tried it, i bid for another pair for 105$ pair with shipping included (42 each + 22$ shipping from ubid.com) for my rears.

Best sight for biddind: ubid.com
Best sight for music: scour.net or .com
Best speakers: BIC America (I love every things about these speakers, they are great, trust me)

If you think these sound good, listen to the BIC V736 tower. It uses the same drivers (2 6.5 woofs) as the DV62 and they sound AWESOME! BIC speakers are a steal and they may be raising their prices!

Strength:

LOOKS, SOUND!!!, SIZE ISNT OVERWHELMING AND THEY HAVE EXCELLENT BUILD QUALITY!

Weakness:

Can be a LITTLE bright sounding on bright sounding receivers like some Onkyo, sony, etc, so a Denon or Yamaha will compliment these!

about 4 reviews down the page, "sixtox" said that the DV736 towers are awsome sounding...i could not better agree with him. The DV736 towers have the same woofers as the DV62si speakers, AND the same speakers (dual 6 1/2" and 3/4" tweeter) as the DV62CLR center speaker!! If you get the full line-up with the DV62si speakers in the rear, the DV62CLR center, and the DV736 towers in the fronts, this system kicks @$$ and you will not find a better deal anywhere, on any speakers.

Anyway, that said, Here goes: I got these about 8 months ago, and was extremely happy with the sound, and performance for the money. In a review from Home Theatre Magazine, they said that the BIC DV62si speakers compare to other speakers from other companies selling up to $700/pr! That means you get the BIC speakers for around $150-$160/pr, and it competes with other speaker manufactures with speakers selling up to $700/pr. Take a listen to them, and you will find out for yourself, these not only look beautiful, but sound better and =the BEST value performance, like BIC america's slogan. I sold a pair of these to a friend of mine, and he uses them at his computer on an older yamaha receiver and he shakes his floor and walls with these things. They do pack some strong bass, and the rear ports function very well in corners or against a wall. These are powerful, nice looking and perfect sounding speakers. I can get you a pair of these for $160 shipped (i am a BIC distributor) so if you are interested (these are sometimes hard to find on the internet) lemme know and i will get them ordered for ya. I just posted a review for the DV62CLR center speaker that is also in my system. BIC all around sounds better than BOSE and infinity to me, no doubt about it, and trust me, i have tested them all, including paradigm, definitive technology, etc. and the BIC speakers dont come close in performance for the price, i would never pay more for 100% sound in the other ones when BIC has 99% sound for MUCH MUCH cheaper. Not many people notice a difference. Thank you!

Strength:

Beautiful, rich, full spectrum sound.

Weakness:

None obvious, although sort of small. Bass not the greatest but not bad, and irrelevant with a subwoofer.

I couldn't be more happy with these speakers. Sure, they are a little small, but when I first hooked them up, I was amazed at how well things sounded that I had listened to tons of times before. And they are so inexpensive! I know there are speakers you can get that are much better. But at this price? I sort of doubt it. Use them for main speakers in a starter system, switch them to rear speakers if you upgrade. You won't be sorry.

Weakness:

so far none

It's by far the "Bestest" buy for me. I got it from uBid.com for about $90 delivered. Very clean and clear, acceptable bass. Since I have subwoofer, I can overlook the bass shortcomings. I used them to replace my old Bose 201; there's simple no comparison between the Bose and the BIC. Again for less than $100, this is definitely a no brainer!

Strength:

Solid build, nice look.

Weakness:

They need to be "tweaked" (see below).

My wife and I decided a couple of months ago to get a "real" audio system. Since all we had was an older, all-in-one minisystem, we had to get everything, and tried to keep costs down. We got the 62si's on the strength of their recommendations on this site, and also from Consumer Reports (we also got the Toshiba SD-3205 DVD/5-disc changer, and Yamaha RXV-496 receiver - 5 stars on the Toshiba, although I would like a couple of extra features, the Yamaha is 4+ and great for the $, and I must say that for about $1100 complete, including 2pr. of the 62's and the 62CLR, I'm VERY happy with the money spent, especially since I'm much more into the HT aspect than just volume).

Before hooking up these speakers, I hooked up the speakers on my old mini-system -- the receiver alone made a HUGE difference. However, I might have had my hopes up, but the difference when I hooked up these speakers was less than I had hoped for. I really was disappointed. I wasn't expecting miracles, but the speakers on the old system were very small, very light, very old, etc. Sure there was a little more bass, but that was about it. So, like many others on this site, I decided to give Ed Frias a call (his info is in other reviews, below). Although in contrast to the person below who said he figured the worst that would happen would be to get a slightly better speaker, I thought the worst would be he'd take my $ and my crossovers! Well, after checking into him a little (for those who don't know him, take a look at the DIY's on this site -- Ed designed them, and took the time to answer MANY questions about them, and answer my questions, as well), I decided to give him a try, at least on one pair.

Wow.

I'm sorry I didn't send the crossovers on both pair at the same time (the others are in today's mail). The difference was amazing, not only because everything is so much better, but because EVERYTHING is so much better. Before, there were highs, and there were lows, but they really didn't seem to go together well (listening to tv through them one night, you could hear when someone's voice got low, all of a sudden the bass would kick in -- sounded very odd). In addition to finding more of a middle, the bass is enhanced (we watched a few select battle scenes from Last of the Mohicans - BOOM), the mids are better, and the sound really fills the room so much nicer - much better imaging. It sounded too good to be true as I was reading the others, but it really is a huge difference. And, like I said, check him out in the DIY's and the forums -- he IS for real!

Overall I'm giving these a 4 - unless you get them tweaked, don't get your hopes up too high like I did. Out of the box, they're probably a 4 for value, and a 3+ overall. Now, they're definitely a 5. If you're thinking about them, you might just want to get them straight from Ed, with the tweaks already done. If you already own them and haven't already: GET THEM TWEAKED! You won't believe the difference! Thanks, Ed.
