Strength:

Couldn't beat the price

Weakness:

that they exist.

These came with a bunch of restaurant equipment I bought at an auction. They also came with a small pair of Optimus all-metal speakers. Ugh,what a mess. It took 4 months to find someone who would actually give me $25 for all four, and even then I felt guilty. Avoid Bose like the plauge.

One best way to stand these little speakers pls see photo at http://members.ch.tripodasia.com.hk/wiselee/index-2.html. Result differs greatly from any kind of conventional speaker stand technique!

Strength:

Small size, sturdy case

Weakness:

Sound quality on highs and lows

Well, it's not much of a speaker, other that they are small, but hey you get what you paid for.

WARNING!!!
If you are not an ardent BOSE proponent, and you have posted a negative review of a bose product, you may be subjected to the wrath of an individual who goes by the moniker "Mr. Bose". He will come to you in stealth, with a foul tongue and an equally lacking vocabulary totally void of any degree of usefull coherency. This person is evidently either retarted or perhaps a crack adict.

Mr. BOSE: We know your out there, however your cowardice is evident in the fact that you don't give anyone the opportunity to respond to you maniacal ravings. This will not be tolerated. At least When I write a to reviewer I give them a chance to retort. Mr. Bose, it is well that you are devoted to your cause, nevertheless, it is unfortunate that you lack the intelligence to convey your ignorant beliefs. It is advisable that you consult a dictionary which, just in case you weren't aware, is a book which may bestow upon you startling revalations about the mechanics of intelligent expression. I await your response.

I got these speakers from one of my friends who had them and never used them, I traded him 3 flannel shirts from the gap that were too small for me to wear. These are absolutely the worse speakers i have ever owned, they are horrible, this line of speakers by Bose seems to puzzle me very much, the 101 is the forerunner of the 141(i think)environmental speaker. What are these things supposed to be used for, it was marketed as a half ass speaker that you could use in your boat , car , jeep, dormroom, or whatever but the kicker is that its a 4ohm speaker(how many boats, cars, have amps that run a 4ohm load)? I hooked these things up to my computer via a Sony STR-D1015 reciever, They sounded terrible, absolutely no bass. they made a very audible hissing noise when playing audio CDs through the ROM drive (it sounded like old cassete tapes before Dolby B)I thought the hiss was coming from the soundcard feeding back into the amp, but this was not the case because i hooked up a pair of these little optimus Pro X-5 that i bought at the Shack for 40$ pair, they sounded 10x better than the Bose, I couldnt believe it, it was like night and day, a 40$ Radio Shack product outperformed a 200$+ Bose product. Every time I drive to Boston on The Mass Pike I have to drive by the Bose head quarters, this place should be burned to the ground, but the major question seems to be how does Bose get away with selling such garbage for ridiculous amounts of our hard earned cash? By the way picked up a pair of 1985 Magnapan SMGs at a garage sale for 100$ bucks, checked them out when i got home and everthing was all right, Hooked them up, Wow what a steal for a 100$ sound better than most 1000$+ speakers. This speaker gets 0 stars but the minimum is 1 star so i have to give it that.

I have listened to the Monitor 101 speakers. True bass is not high but I feel the highs are good. At sams Club you can now purchase the 101s for $100. I think $210 is a bit pricey for monitor speakers. For $100 I feel they are worth it.

It is interesting to read the comments on the Bose 101 posted so far, but I feel it is time to set a balance. I have owned a pair of 101s for over 13 years. They were originall bought for the following reason: Indestructability. After auditioning JBL control 1 and several other lesser models the 101s were chosen. They work at 4 ohms so you can get more out of your amplifier. They are water resistant. They have cloth edging to the driver, not rotting foam. Cost $200.00 in March 1986. At first they were used in my wife's car. The sound in the small environment was good, and far superior to most car speakers of the day. Being removable was an advantage for parties, picnics etc. Being a 4 ohm load (as most car speakers are) they are easy to drive.
The 101s next job was as monitors for my mobile disco - what they were made for. In this respect they perform superbly. The fact that they had little bass was of no consequence as the 2 12 inch woofers 5 feet away more that filled in.

The 101s have spent the last eleven years in my kitchen coping well with the heat and steam etc.

Sonically, they are not up to the standards of most $200 speakers, but I wonder how many $200 speakers I would have had to buy to give me 13 years of trouble free use in these sorts of environments?

One of my current occupations is evaluating musicians demo tapes, most of which is done using JBL L-100A or Spirit Absolute 2 monitors. The Bose 101 cannot compare in the frequency extremes with either of these monitors. However, for monitoring within their limitations they are a fine speaker.

I PURCHASED THE BOSE 101-II AND AM GENERALLY PLEASED WITH THEM. I THINK THAT YOU HAVE TO REALIZE WHAT YOU ARE BUYING THEM AND WHAT THEY WERE DESIGNED FOR. MOSTLY BACKGROUND MUSIC. PURCHASED THEM TO USE IN A BEDROOM AND MOUNTED THEM HIGH UP ON A WALL. THERE THEY PREFORM QUITE NICELY. I DIDNT EXPECT TO SOUND LIKE THE SPEAKERS IN MY MAIN SYSTEM WHICH THEY DONT. GIVEN THEIR LIMITATIONS I THINK THEY ARE OK AND THE LOOK IS OK TO.

I believe these speakers atleast for me deserve 5 speakers. They are great for a $100. Thanks mike for saving me money by going to Sams Club. With my advent subwoofer they sound great. I bought 4. So home cinema is sounding great.
