I use the VCS-10 with my Harman Kardon AVR-7000 surround receiver. I have Bose 901s for the fronts and 201s for the surround speakers. This configuration sounds great at both high and low volumes. The voice quality is clear and sounds good. I don't know why there is such negative press for this speaker. Maybe inproper component configuration can account for this.

Strength:

Great depth.. Huge sound field... Great buy! Wonderful clarity with the voicing.

Weakness:

A little cut out on the lows below 100HZ, but hows voice do you know goes to 100HZ? Good point huh ;-)

Bose... Being one of the most hated or most loved speakers in the world must be doing something right.. As my music teacher once told me, "Tim you know you did the job right if you made everyone either happy or mad as hell." The VCS-10 Is a great speaker with very large depth and the sound field is amazing.. I use to be very skeptical about center speakers often time I found that they ruined the integrity of the front L and R, and produced a gap between the speakers.. Some of you know what I speak of.. The 4 2.5 speakers are a wonderful idea, and the placement of the speakers to produce a huge field with the L and R are amazing... I added this to my final addition to my bose equipment which are 601 and 161 for surround. Both current models... They are voiced mached perfectly.. Many of you think voice matching means every speaker is going to sound the same on the test tones.. Of course this can't happen because the different frequencies an 8in woofer creates to that of a 2.5.. So look for more richness in those speakers... Additionally make sure with the VCS-10 you turn your center speaker size to small.. It's a huge difference if it's on large.. That can be a factor with so many peoples displeasure in the speaker...

Strength:

Sleek design

Weakness:

For me, most everything else.

Recently bought the 301s for fronts and 201s for rears at great prices ($190 and $120) respectively, new from Best Buy. Hadn't given much thought to other speakers because I knew that Bose was the best, hands down. Then I bought the VSC-10 Center Channel and my affair with Bose came to a screeching halt. Dialogue was muddy, and the speaker sounded nothing like the rest of my speakers. The VCS 10 was washed away by the larger speakers, or it sounded stretched beyond its limit after tweaking of the output levels. Out of sheer disappointment and because I wanted to keep the center channel and the front speakers matched, I began listening to other speakers. I guess the VCS-10 was a blessing in disguise because I've returned all the Bose stuff and purchased some Paradigm towers and some Paradigm bookshelf speakers for surrounds. Because of the increased expense, I will have to wait to purchase a center channel. Nevertheless, this system is lightyears ahead of what I had before. The Paradigm speakers are honest. If you are thinking of assembling a surround sound system of Bose speakers, don't forget to listen to the center channel even if you do not plan to buy it at that particular time. Then give a listen to any other center channel in the store and remember that about 80% of most movie sound is fed through the center channel.

love the look, small sleek design

Well I read over 80 reviews before I made up my mind to purchase VCS-10. I found the speaker along with a pair of 141's at a pawn shop for $80, no lie! I only wanted a good center Chanel speaker, but they wouldn't let go of one without the other. I took a day to read the reviews mostly negative before I bought the trio. I figured for that price I was getting a steal. If I didn't like them I wasn't out and big money. I did good with the 141's as rear replacements for some old KLH surrounds. I have Technics tower speakers for my main speakers. I was not at all disappointed with my purchase. The center chanel produced good highs and mids. I could hear the dialogue very well. I don't know what all the fuss was over this speaker. It worked great. FYI I tested the speaker with Blade II.

Strength:

Great looking design.....

Weakness:

Low volume and "muddy" sounding dialogue.

My girlfriend bought this for me as a gift so I am stuck with it. As others have said, it looks really good, but the sound quality is lacking. There have been several times that you just cannot hear what is being said while watching a movie. I have turned up the output level and tweaked the thing as much as possible, but it just doesn't do any good. I think it is time to accidently have the dog pull it off the TV and break it so I can buy what I want!

looks great

Weakness:

sounds......not so great.

I have to say the VCS-10 looks awesome. It is the perfect size, and is a perfect match for my decor.Thats where the fun ends. The more I upgrade my components, the more this center channel is exposed. It sounds boxy, and one dimensional.Voices are muddy, and surround music (DVD-A etc) is out of the question. It's to the point where the thing is only sitting on my TV for show,I have the center channel spread to the 701s.I know they are supposed to be tonally matched, but this center channel doesnt sound like it belongs with the 701s.I have good cable (Nordost)and really good components, and this center channel is simply outclassed.I bought it to improve the sound of my Acoustimass 6 set.It did improve the soundstage a bit,but the sound overall wasn't that much better.I then purchased a pair of 701s,and used the acoustimass speakers to complete my 6.1 set up.The VCS-10 continues to lag behind.Better sound can be had for less money.By the way,the first one I bought kept cutting out too ,and was exchanged for one that doesnt.

Strength:

Nice looking, small size.

Weakness:

No tweeter, hard to hear dialog.

I have the Bose 601 and 301 speakers, and this center channel is a piece of garbage. I really enjoy my 601s and 301s, but this is a very weak center. I switched to the JBL-Studio II center.

Design and clarity of sound

Weakness:

None...they're teriffic!

I can't believe all of the negative things that I've read on this site -- I hope people don't believe a word they've read ... these speakers are fantastic! Combined with the 301 speakers and 601 speakers that Bose makes, the center speaker is the best on the market! I highly recommend these speakers.

Strength:

thin design, good sound with tweeking

Weakness:

no bass

Not the best Bose product I have experienced, but not nearly as bad as other reviews claim. Dialog stays locked to the screen even when no matter where you are sitting. Matches well with other Bose speakers (701's, 301's). I did have to tweek the settings on my receiver to get quality sound, and it sounds much better with the top vents exposed to open air (i.e. not buried in an entertainment center)! I was also disappointed with dull sound until I got larger gauge speaker wire. I would recommend this center channel for any HT system with other Bose speakers and a powered sub...

Strength:

Looks good

Weakness:

Sounds dreadful

The first , and last, time I have ever bought something on the strength of the name. I was in a hurry and didn't have time for a thorough auditon. Result- woeful sound and a big disappointment. No amount of tweaking and adjustment of my Marantz amp could make this sound better. Replaced it with a B&W LCR3 which left it for dead in every aspect.
