After much reading, research and listening, I finally decided on Acoustic Energy's AE109. They far outclass anything else in their price range ( and even others more expensive). They perform very well, have no bad resonance, are extremely solid and look good. Their sound is good at low listening levels but are more appreciated at higher volumes when they really kick in. |

One would be hard-pressed to find a more solidly-built floor-stander for this price-point. These speakers can really provide a lot of slam for the buck as well as good imaging.. However, they are not at all forgiving of what you feed into them and, therefore, benefit from quality source electronics, as well as careful component matching. They can respond quite dramatically to changes in amps, cables and so forth. Whether this is the sign of a good speaker or just a fussy one, I don’t know. The bottom line is that, given the right conditions, these speakers can really provide excellent speed, imaging, detail and dynamics for the price. I give them a four star rating because how they perform seems more system-dependent than average, particularly when it comes to upper-mid-range and treble information. |

Strength:
Good all round sound, great starter floor speakers. Good value
Weakness:
AE 120 has more power and depth in character. Great speakers and I have seen the AE 120s for 350 pounds so there are better ones out there for less that I paid for mine. They fill my room really well (uni flat as well as home) and give good overall sound. There are better speakers and the lower range needs work but they are fine for my music. I got a sub from paraidigm (ps 1200) and it adds so much more to the sound. This setup is good for the money. Similar Products Used: Other AEs and Epos - other generic |

Strength:
Excellent bass Amazing with female vocals & rock
Weakness:
Piano not convincingly portrayed I origianly bought these speakers after hearing a listening room demo at sevenoakes hi-fi in Oxford and was amazed at the clarity and depth that these budget floorstanders produced. I asked and got a home demo for 2 weeks where they continued to impress me. They are at their best well away from the rear & side walls or they tend to "boom". Vocies are portrayed with detail and female vocalists like kate bush and Celene Dion come across with all the inherent feeling in their songs.Classsical music had real depth and both percussion & stringed instruments sounded impressive. The only slight fault I could possibly find was that piano sounded slightly muted & detracted from the overall excellence.Needless to say I bought these speakers, Trading in my Excellent Mission 780se's Similar Products Used: Mission & Kef |

Strength:
powerful bass,sweet treble,unobtrusive for floorstanders
Weakness:
rear ports can cause some mild boominess if positioned wrong like most speakers these start to sound better after a bit of use ,the treble is smooth yet crisp and the powerful bass doesn't swamp the midrange keeping vocals and intruments focused in the soundstage.the imaging is exellent, these speakers image better than my old tannoy 605 which were supposed to be their strong point. despite their small 5.5 inch bass units these speakers love powerful amps . my only complaint is they can sound boomy with certain music if positioned too close to the wall,I have mine about 8 inches away and it cures the problem in my room, in my opinion these are one of the best budget~mid price speakers you can buy at the moment and they look classy too Similar Products Used: tannoy r2,kef coda9 |

Well, having owned these speakers for about 3 months I must say that their greatest strenght is the bass, and their only real drawback is that they are somewhat tireing if you listen for a longer period of time, say 1.5 to 2.5 hours, although that may have as much to do with the rest of my system.A good buy anyway, I would recommend them to anyone looking for floorstanders in this price-region. |

They are perfect for people who listen rock, techno or whatever needs great amount of bass. However, I recommend you to listen the Arro from Totem. This little speaker is much more refined and musical with a more detailed but unfatiguing presentation. It has also a more natural midrange with a softer top end and a cleaner bass than the Acoustic Energy. Also, I think B&W makes better speakers in this price range. |

109 is an excellent speaker for the home theater. It plays the low bass found in movies well, but the biggest disappointments are found when listening to music. The upper bass doesn't really kick in the way I like it and as advertised, they sound very british. They might be better for a smaller room. Pretty expensive too, but the outer appearance is nice. |
