I have had my 109's for two years now. They sound good for the money (600€ in Finland) and I havent found better one's (or much better one's) for that price. Specially the midrange and upper bass at high volumes are very powerfull. I would like a bit clearer high freqs. I recently bought Mirage ps-12 to boost lower end and they seem to work quite nicely together. 109's are much better choice than too metallic sounding 209's (even if 209's have better hf unit).

Strength:

value for money

Weakness:

its a small speaker in a big box. AEGIS IS A BETTER BUY USED,,

i have just back traded a system, that was becoming, a hassle to own,,it was too big, becoming too expensive,,my young children were, to young to use it, now they are a little older playing guitar, piano etc, & want more than a small portable cd player. i traded the martin logan sl 2, the SONIC FRONTIER sf 1 pre, & the dinosaur SUMO monoblock amp,. The Sumo was a DC amp direct current type. I now have a Golden Audio se40 x 2 in mono a SEP-1 pre amp (GOLDEN AUDIO),and a set of AE109, speakers, & a Teac VRDS cd player. I was very happy, with the deal, and my friends love it,. For the price, the AE109 is a versatile speaker, and now i can get back to the music i love, instead of listening to a set of cables, or having to listen to music i didnt like just to hear my old speakers do their job.Acoustic energy make great speakers for the money & the AE109 delivers the goods. Yes you can play rock with this set up,, including Steve Vai or Frank Gambale.

Strength:

Weakness:

Sound quality

Lets start from the bottom upwards. Anyone who hasn't heard the likes of RTL-3's won't know what deep bass sounds like- or just how good it is, and 109's only reach about 40Hz not down to the 20Hz range which we can hear. This is excusable from a small floorstander, but the bass boom-boom-boom isn't. Mission 753's use similar reflex ported bass drivers without boom, although the extension is no better.
AE 109's midranges are ported, why?
Phase distortion from this set up makes them the most two dimensional cheap sounding pair of speakers I have ever heard. If you want soundstaging - and I'm not expecting ten feet in all directions - you'll be disappointed.
And as for the treble, please give me an excuse for not having any. This I might point out is with the treble on the Sony TA-FB730r amp turned right up to full.
My advice is don't bother to remove them from their boxes, they won't sound any different.
Don't think that I'm being overly fussy, but I've heard so much better for similar money and with a speaker it's sound quality that counts not looks but I'll be kind and give them One point for looking pretty.
