I have these speakers since 96.My system is composed by :
1 pair 0f 604's (Main)
1 center channel B&W CC6
Rear speakers B&W DM 302
Sub woofer - B&W AS-6
All connections using Audioquest cables.
Speakers (Type 4 - Bi-wired)
Power Amplifier Rotel RB 980 BX
Receiver : Yamaha RX992
Video Sony :SLV 940
CD player: Yamaha CDC 845 as transport
Ultrajitterbug (with optical cable from receiver) and Transdac(with coaxial connection from the jitterbug)from Sonic Frontiers .

With this system the performance of 604's is as maximum as you can get for the money. It does have limitations . Bass for instance it is not enough tight so dependending on what type of music you listen you will need the sub-woofer. If you listen to classical music it is fine but for Rock (classic rock) a sub is necessary. Positioning is also critical for these speakers, and is not easy to fine tunning them. Once you find the right positioning the difference in sound goes from crap to almost perfect.Altough it seems a bit front forward the overall soundstage is nice and smooth. It is the type of sound you can listen for hours without getting tired. At the end of the day what really matters is not paying attention to the speakers but being involved by the music and forgetting about them. The 604 give me this sensation. Also for home theater they are excellent as a part of the whole system for dolby prologic. I did not had yet the opportunity to use them with dolby digital.
For the price it deserves a five star.

I auditioned these speakers about 6 months ago and did not purchase them. Thinking B&W is such a trusted name in speakers, I had some higher expectiations from the 604's. My findings were as follows the highs were not that clean, the midrange was pretty good, but the main problem this speaker has is bass boom/mudiness. I could not get over how the lower octaves sounded in this system, ie. not very realistic. If you must go with the 600 line of B&W go with the 602/601 and add a good sub. I eventually purchased a pair of Mirage M5si's.

Strength:

Very clear and fare in midrange, ultimate definition in bass for the complicated elecronic things if amplified and cabled properly

Weakness:

boomy with most amps

biamp them and attache rf busting ferrit rings to the low end audio cables and you'll have the fastest low bass you could ever imagin.
the reason is that tow bass drivers produce a huge feedback to the amp in mgz range and that just distroys the low friquency picture with most even really good amps except tubes
this very chip twick will astonishing!!!

Strength:

Sound stage, clarity, price, quality, reputation, and shipping carton.

Weakness:

The lack of reviews on the b&w website.....that's it!

The sound is amazing, and real. It is not too bright, and performs better than any of the other speakers in and above its price range. It is great for both music and movies. I drove them hard with my Yamaha receiver and they sounded and handled it beautifully. I have all B&W speakers, and anyone who hears them knows why!
My B&W DM604S1, B&WLCR6S2, B&W DM603S2 and two ASW2000 subwoofers really rock the house. My amplfier is a YAMAHA DSP-A1 and my DVD is a pioneer DV-717.
