Strength:

un matched sound for the price

Weakness:

they can tip over easly

These speakers are outstanding, the sound reproduction is unmatched for the price I paid, only $934 for the pair! at a local high end shop that was trying to push the last two pairs they had out because they had the newer models with the different woofers in. These speakers sound great in home theater use but truely shine when listening to music. In my opinion these speakers don't really need a sub for listening to music but one is needed for watching movies for ultra lows . Overall these speakers are outstanding performers in any application , even at the regular price they'er worth it

I use a Sony STR-DA555ES receiver

Strength:

Midrange
Ability to play loud
Imaging

Weakness:

Edgy highs
Boomy upper bass
Anemic low bass

I had the opportunity to listen to the 604's throughout the summer, and I must say that for the price I am unimpressed.

I found that the highs were edgy, causing me to wince when listening at higher volumes. This sounded like extra detail at first, but quickly grew fatiguing. Holly Cole wasn't as soothing through these speakers as I'm used to. This wass accentuated by the lack of low bass (though upper bass was plentiful -too plentiful)

The upper bass was boomy, and the lower bass was anemic -I expected these to go much lower than they do. When listening to Crystal Method they just couldn't reproduce the lows on "Busy Child", "Cherry Twist" or "She's my Pusher". On Enya's Watermark CD, "Longships" wasn't reproduced very well, losing much of the impact that this very bass heavy track has. (Lots of ~30Hz information).

I honestly expected more out of these. I was generally pleased with the 601's and 602's, especially given the price, but I wanted more from the 604's. I have a good idea of what flat bass sounds like, and perhaps I could have tolerated the bass rolloff on the 604's if the upper bass wasn't exaggerated. As it is a good subwoofer would be need to enjoy the full frequency spectrum (forgetting for a moment that the highs are harsh).

These speakers were set up in a sound room and were driven by Adcom gear. Things I liked: Midrange is clean, imaging was good, and power handling/their ability to play quite loudly (though maybe the harshness made it seem like they were louder than they actually were).

I could probably live with these speakers if used with a good subwoofer, and played with listener position/used room treatments to tame the high end. On the other hand, I'm comparing them with the Paradigm Studio 100's, which are very good performers.

Strength:

Very good imaging
Highs are very clear
Excellent Midrange

Weakness:

Lots of bass (takes getting used to)
Very pricy

Overall i enjoy listening to these speakers very much.
They are driven by a Harman/Kardon HK3600 reciever which supplies plenty of power to drive them. They took some getting used to because they supply lots of bass ( much more than my previous pair of DM603's).

I am an Audiophile wanna be. But I do know that it doesn't matter what components you buy; IF YOU DON'T HAVE GREAT SPEAKERS ALL IS LOST. So I cashed in my Overtime and with $2,700 to spend, I started my quest.
I first delved into old issues of Stereo Review to get a feel for what's available. Everything I read told me to go listen; so off I went. I started with the usual stereo outlets; Good Guys, Frys, Circuit City, etc. Although i always a Bose 901 fan ever since Series 1, they didn't seem to produce a sound that grabbed me. The Acoustimass Series looked and seemed to sound great, but when I made A-B comparisions, they didn't seem to even approach the response of a full range speaker. My ears told me this was true of ALL sub/sat systems. Listen yourself; I'm sure you'll agree.

I'm a sincere believer that most will be pleased with almost any good rated speakers. You won't miss the difference between a good and great speaker; you'll never know the difference UNLESS you do A-B switching; most of us will never know what you are missing. This was true during my quest as I listened to some 50 speaker systems. They all had differences for sure, but none made the difference outstanding, until I heard that B&W DM604.

I had never heard of B&W. It was on one of my visits to a high end stereo store that I noticed them. Now keep in mind that no salesman showed them to me. I just went into one of their sound rooms; stuck in my baseline CD and WOW. I don't know how to explain the difference; just listen and you can tell. These are GREAT speakers. I even bit the bullet and paid close to retail and if you don't think that's a big deal, talk to my wife...

I bought a pair of DM604, the CC6 center and the AS6 Sub. Those that are on a tighter budget can do without the sub. The Dm604 have excellent bass; a sub is is almost redundant.

If anyone out there has biwired the DM604, please email me. I'd like to know the difference. (RacerChris@AOL.COM)

Very disappointed!!!Shallow soundstage; mid were too bright, muddy bass; it doesn't matter what amps were used (Krell 300, Parasound 2200II, Jadis tube amps).
I had these 604s for trial for 30 days. I ended up returning them to the local dealer and exchange for the PSB Stratus Silver.
B&W has compromised the sound quality so drastically. The old and obsolete 640s were so much better.
One star is over-rating for these inferior B&W604.
A friend of mine feels the same way about the B&W602.

Why anyone would think so highly of these speakers is beyond me. The bass is lose and without definition. Not to mention the fact that it's just plain boomy. Then the midrange is poor due to the use of that 7" driver. Poor is an understatment. It's just plain boomy. The highs are perfectly fine, but do not make up for all the other flaws this speaker exibits. There are many better buys on the market, for any application.

B&W DM604s are great speakers for money...the high is clean, clear, and I JUST CAN SAY GREAT!!! Try Eric Clapton or Vanessa Mai.Not to mention their low, try to play on some CDs from Mariah Carey, Puff Daddy...you'll be grateful!

5 stars for such speakers below $1600.

It is a nice speaker. Great bass and nice mid-range especially for female voice. Stereo image is alright but not as good as Kelly KT3.
You have to drive them hard if you want to listen to its best. In
low level volume, they are a bit flat. It is overprice sure. So it
seems not many magazines have a review for this speaker. Based on
the Dm600 series, they are all good (WHAT HIFI and HIFI
CHOICE magazine). The positioning for the speaker is a bit tricky.
It is better off the wall , otherwise, boom.......They are nicely
made. I got the cherry wood effect. Very nice and very heavy (29Kg
per one).

This is a speaker for people who like bass. In the market, it is
very difficult to find another speaker around this price can offer
this bass extension.

I have a good discount for the speaker, I had 26 % off the RRP.

I don't actually own these myself, but my dad does. One reviewer gave these speakers a low score because of a lack of definition in the bass. I wonder if he/she used proper speaker cables...
My dad's DM604's are connected to his Sony TA-FA5ES amp by Wireworld Oasis II cables, and there sure isn't any lack of definition in bass, mid or high.
Response and definition are good, the DM604's are capable of handling just about any kind of music. Sound is never over-agressive.

O, and if you ever try something before you buy, use some good recordings. Better quality audio equipment might make half of your cd-collection sound crap.
This isn't, however, the equipment's fault. Your previous equipment might not have been good enough to reveal the lack of recording quality.

I recommend: Fun Lovin' Criminals - 100% Colombian, Radiohead - OK computer, Pulp - This is Hardcore.

I have listened to the 604s at a shop, next to some quadral floorstanders (don't remember what model), a pair of mission 733i's, and a pair of Wharfedale Modus 1/6s. I listened to excerpts from various classical pieces. They were absolutely magnificent, and clearly a cut above the other speakers mentioned above. Very neutral, on the verge of sweat, but remaining open and detailed, and reasonably transparent. Not even a trace of box resonances. What was amazing was that they were driven by some very modest sources and amplification - an entry level Rotel RX-950 receiver and a Rotel RCD-930 CD player - and still sounded great. They may not be as transparent as the Quad ESLs or the Magneplaner 3.5s, but for a box speaker, I think they are fabulous.
