Strength:
Excellent, realistic Soundstage, great mid lows and mid highs, Excellent on live recordings. The required preamp allows good subtle tweaks to compensate for room characteristics.
Weakness:
Although lows are tight and real sounding, I like them better with ten ich or better sub. Placement is important! I work in the sound reinforcement business, and have run the board for several rooms. I've owned my 901 Series VI in piano black finish for almost 3 years. After initial listenings to many other speakers in this price range, I decided that the Bose matched my most critical listening requirements. I use them as a stereo pair supended from the ceiling in combination with a self designed and built subwoofer, powered by a Harman Kardon High current design Integrated Amp. I listen to music ranging from blues, jazz, world, accoustic, to classic rock alternative on LP's and CD's. Please Note, If you buy this speaker, the Preamp is required! It is not an option. Also, as with all good rear firing speaker designs, placement is very important. This is a completely different design than traditional tweeter, mid& woofer designs. These speakers were actually designed to be suspended in the air several feet from a wall, similiar to what I use for pro sound reinforcement. They are full range but sound best with a good sub woofer. Because I feel that a sub is required for my needs, I would agree with some reviewers that they can be a bit pricey, but I did not mind paying about 1500 bucks for the Bose 6 and a Carver designed subwoofer in exchange for the beautiful and accurate soundstage that I have in my 16'x25' listening room, with no speakers on the floor. The preamp is simple to tweak and I run it in the tape loop of the receiver. |

Excellent sound, good price.
Weakness:
"Bose" sound. Some like it some don't There are many people that are writing reviews for the 901's that seem to be using them without the EQ that is provided. When you hook these up through your pre outs to the front mains they are great sounding speakers. When you wire them to your front main banana plug connections they suck. You have to use the EQ. Most receivers now a days are equipped with pre outs so that you can use external amps, 901's and other things that require the pre outs. Bose has been around for quite some time and they still have a reputation that is pretty good. I hate to see them getting bashed for something that is caused by ignorance. Also the 301's are probably the best set of $300 speakers you can get Similar Products Used: Boston, Polk, Infinity |

Average Joes will think your cool for having Bose speakers.
Weakness:
You just gave Bose $1400 in pure profits. These speakers wouldnt be so bad if they were about $300 per pair. Bose makes the most overpriced speakers on the market. How can a speaker with 9 4.5" drivers (8 rear firing) be taken seriously? It can not possibly produce accurate highs and lows. I see all these people bragging about how loud these things are, please. If you want a loud speaker check out the 102db rating on Klipsch RF-7s. You can get a pair for $1500 at AcousticSoundDesign.com. They kill the 901s in every way. The moral of the story? Bose makes the best speakers in the entire world. Even though the materials and design philosophy would dictate that they'd be pathetic pieces of crap, they have uprooted natural laws and come out on top once again!!!
Weakness:
None at all. They are so good, they make neerby speakers sound better. I had spent many an hour in search of a system with what it would take to be my "reference". It finally came to fruition about a year ago (or so I had thought). I auditioned the Dunlavy SC-IV with boulder amplification and other associated Levinson electronics. No matter how hard I tried, I could find nothing to compare to these. Bass response was off the scale, the most seamlessly integrated speaker I had encountered. To spite the $26000 price tag of the speakers and the more than $70000 in associated electronics (boulder 2060 amp, levison No. 30 pre-amp, No 31.5 transport, No 380s DA, and straight-wire& Kimber select), this degree of sonic perfection was worth ANY price. So I decided to commit the very next day. I had a room in my house that measured 20x26x10, which would be transformed into my listening room. And then the day came, the equipment was installed and the break-in period commenced. I was in heaven; what more could anyone want? Over the past 8 months this system has served me well, and met up to ANY demand. They have the dynamics of a wall of servo subwoofers coupled with the transparent highs of an electrostat. But then one glorious day I was strolling through the mall and I decided to stop in the Bose outlet to shame the commoners wallowing in there own low-fi pity. The salesman was actually quite cordial (I WAS going to punch him in the face just for fun, when your as rich as me you can get away with stuff like that), And He invited me to audition the new 901 series 7. The track was Stevie ray Vaughn's "little wing", which is one of my reference songs, so I figured I was in for quite a laugh. Boy was I wrong!!!!!!!!!! The 901 sounded better than my SC-VIs!!! Whats that you say, I'm an idiot?! Well sir, I welcome you to think whatever you want, But I did a "DOUBLE BLIND TEST" just to confirm my suspicions. The 901s looked taught and sturdy where they where, so I decided to haul my 550 lb dunlavys down to the Bose outlet, along with all of my equipment. The test was set. He (that clever salesman) played the 1812 overture first through the 901s, I thought it was the Dunlavys!!!!!!! The base on the 901s FAR exceeds what the SC-VIs are capable of, the hell with those 2 15" woofers, If you want good base, you need 9-4.5" woofers. And treble? forget about it!!! The 901s went all the way up to 90kHz!!! And the time/phase alignment (a dunlavy marketi Similar Products Used: Dunlavy SC-VI, Boulder 2060 amp, Mark Levinson transport. can be used as a step going up the bed or even a small table if you are short of them.
Weakness:
no weaknesses if used as i mentioned above. THE WORST SPEAKERS EVER BUILT !Like all the Bose speakers , their "invented" D/Reflecting tecnology is B.S. just makes it sound worse. And off course you wont get lows and highs from the 901 simply because they were probably made from some kind off animal that could not notice High and low frequencies (im still trying to figure out) and as far as they know , it is " full range " . Strength:
The best lows and highs I''ve ever heard from a home system. Lifelike "like the band being right in your livingroom" accuracy.
Weakness:
Way underpriced. Should be at least 20k a piece. It just plain amazes me that the 901 is so misunderstood. You hear that they lack highs and lows. To really appreciete and know what these speakers are truly capable of invest in a Bose Spatial Control Receiver. These were specifically designed for the 901s. It''s conservately rated at 100 wpc with Direct Coupled amplifiers. This unit was produced back in the late 70'' early 80s. The Spatial Control Receiver can get insanely loud when using 901s. And the bass will thump as well as any sub I''ve heard. The bass can become so powerful and loud that it will almost knock you down. The vocals through this receiver are downright fantastic. And then there''s the high end. Cymbal crashes are so ensanely realistic that you could almost swear the drummer is live there in your room. Totally fantastic. Speaking of drums. The Spatial Control Receiver with 901s produce the punchiest drums I have ever heard on a home system. I have literally shaken things off shelves with this setup and with distortion free clarity. The blending of highs, mids and lows, size, build quality and materials used.
Weakness:
None. I purchased my Bose 901 Concerto series VI speakers used, in mint condition and have been extremely pleased with the performance of these speakers in every way. I am powering these Bose 901''s with an ADCOM GFA-5500 amp and an ADCOM GTP-400 preamp. The sound is very defined and they sound excellent with Jazz, Rock and Hip hop. There is an abundance of bass which can be adjusted with the slider on the EQ which should absolutely be used with these speakers. The highs are strong, clear and bright. The delivery of sound through these speakers is excellent in every way and I am 100% pleased with the performance, quality in materials and design of these loudspeakers. The direct reflecting technology does a pretty job in letting you hear how it SUCKS in any part of the room.
Weakness:
Alters sound completely. The highs sucks as well as the lows, the midrange is the only thing stopping you from crying why you bought these in the first place. Highly overpriced. I''ve have listened to these at friends house for some time, the problem is its sound reproduction. It seems to alter the sound by adding reverb to it, inorder to project the direct reflecting technology. It completely changes what is intended to be produced, it''s okay if these alterations makes the sound better but it actaully makes it sound worse. The midrange is fairly good, the highs completely sucks. At the low ends some parts of it seem to dissappear, they were there when I listen to them in other speakers. I have no idea why they are so overpriced. Similar Products Used: Genelec, JBL, B&W |
