Everything you could ever want
Weakness:
Placement Its definatley worth the time and effort I must admit that there is alot of people that bash the Bose 901''s. I bought a pair about 3 months ago and coupled it with a Yamaha Surround system. Although I couldn''t connect any other speakers to this system because of the lack of Pre-Out, Main-Ins but they provided me with decent sound. After several phone calls with Bose and several reciever makers I settled on buying a Harman Kardon AVR-520 amp. Note that there is only a handful of surround sound amps that can be used with the Bose 901''s in conjunction with the use of other speakers. With only 75 watts thru surround and 85 watts into stereo I was totally shocked. Be it either thru Dolby or 7.1 or 5 channel stero this amp has proved to me that these 901''s are awesome. Very little distortion at all. With great highs and thunderous bass I cant really see the complaints from the bashers. Must be the equipment that they are using. Or the placments of the speakers. I spent more than a few hours trying different placements and then settled down to do some serious testing. Also let it be known that I also have a vintage set of Yamaha''s NS-9191''s as my surround speakers and a Yamaha Center Spearker as well. With a very loaded music libary I tried everything. Just to name a few that I tried would include Joe Satriani. This man has to be the best gutiar player in the world. The highs in a few of his songs made my ears tingle. Another would be MeatLoaf Bat Out of Hell. Todd Rundgren''s gutiar never sounded better. Mannheim Steamroller was the next obvious choice. This rocked the house. With Chip Davis''s great use of orchestra and modern use of Synths it was a pleasure too listen too. Deep basses and earpiercing highs was just to my liking. Another test was AC/DC another great review here as well. Window shattering bass and great highs. With all the talk about the lack of crossovers and paper cones these speakers are more than I ever dreamed of. Now I want another pair to use for the surround speakers as well. My advice to thoughs who are looking, Call Bose''s 1-800 and get a copy of the current list of compatible surround sound amps and you won''t be sorry. I will talk up the Harmon Kardon AVR-520 to be an excellent amp for a modest budget. At 799 from Circuit City its a damn good amp for the Bose 901''s Similar Products Used: Yamaha, Sansui, JBL |

Strength:
Crisp but not harsh end, excellent mids, and solid tight bass. Small size.
Weakness:
Very susceptible to bad placement problems. You need to have adequate clearance. The key to a good experience with these speakers is placement, and proper preamp tweaking for the room. The Bose 901 is a completely unique speaker, and the best placement I have seen is hanging several feet from a reflecting wall in a pretty good sized room, at least 12x16 I do pro sound, mixing for several jazz blues and rock clubs for years so I have a definite opinion of what a live sound should strive to be, across many different style of music. The 901''s allow me to (re)create a soundstage that sounds great with music ranging from from John Fogarty live, to Chick Coreas Akkoustic band, Telark Classical stuff, and everything in between. Note* The mid bass is great and low bass response is good, but I still have a 15 inch Sub fed from my Harmon Karden Integrated Amp. I love having lots of bass response to recreate todays extended bass frequencies. Finally speaking to quality, The cabinets on mine are piano gloss black and well fit and gorgeous. I''ve seen more cutting edge speaker components before, but as a rule, musicality is not measured by componentry, I think Bose''s "ear" for sound has been validated by this product. Lovely brochures, speaker repair shops makes good money rerolling 18 drivers when the foam surrounds fall apart after five years in humid climates.
Weakness:
Sound very bad. As a sales representative for various high end speaker and electronics manufacturer and previously a salesman in a retail store, I am embaressed to admit I actually sold these things to unsuspecting customers. Not only that, I also sold people, God forgive me, Acoustimass systems, and as if that wasn''t bad enough, Lifestyle systems. At the time I knew they were crap, but people came in asking to buy them. One reviewer ironically propsed Bose change their slogan to "Better sales through Advertising" It is an excellent illustration of the motto, build it and they will come. Similar Products Used: I don''t think I have heard any similar products, except perhaps the factory speakers in a 1972 Corolla Hatchback. |

I have heard these speakers in depth, and I have only one thing to say. Bose has endless research capabilities and finacial resoures and should be able to produce a product better then the average garage speaker built by a teenager with a budget of 50 dollars. All I can say is before you spend 1500 dollars on these speakers do your research. There are a lot of very good speaker manufactures out there that actually care about the pursuit of excellent sound reproduction. People, Bose is still using paper drivers, and spring clip connections for speaker cable. Bose is cashing in on the uneducated public. Please audition at least three other speakers before buying. Other speaker names to consider: energy, boston, b&w, jbl, m&k, polk, vandersteen, lynn, just to name a few, there are many others. Do your research |

Strength:
Lots of bass and lots of highs. Samll size. Best speakers made.
Weakness:
People who don''t know anything about speakers don''t like them. I read lot’s of review here from people who don’t like these speakers. After the salesman teaching me a few things I understand there jealousy. Everyone makes mistakes and as the salesman pointed out, not everyone can hear quality sound. I also purchased the new Kenwood VR-510 receiver and “MAN” it gets louder then my neighbors so called high end speakers. Besides they are some brand I never herd of so they can’t be very good. Anyway these speakers are the best and all of you BOSE haters don’t know what your listing to! Similar Products Used: Kenwood |

Strength:
Phenominal lows, excellant mids and smooth highs. Minimal listening fatigue at very high volumes.
Weakness:
Hard to setup correctly, very slight movements can make a huge sonic difference. These speakers are not for everyone, but they are for me! After 5 years of great service, they are a permanent part of my stereo system. If your budget permits buy a Sunfire amplifier to use with the 901''s. I have two pair of 901 VI''s and power them with a Sunfire 2-channel, that''s 600 watts/channel. They have taken every watt of this power without a problem. The lows at this level can be felt as well as heard. I have never owned another pair of speakers that did not make my ears fatigue after a lengthy listening session.
