Owned since 1998. Equivalent to Bose 901 Series 2 which I think we’re the beat speakers made. 970s play classical, folk, rock, and THX Avitar. They are absolutely neutral. What you hear is on the record/ tape/CD/ DVD. It adds nothing and takes away nothing. Why don’t you find these speakers on eBay? Because owners like me won’t part with them

These are by far the greatest speakers!!! I compaired them with Polk Audio's RT2000P and I think BA was superior. The built in subs are fantastic. Originally I brought home a seperate sub woofer (VR-1200 ~ $800.00)but after some expermenting I really had enough speaker with the VR-970s (and I like alot of base in movies but not too much in audio) so I returned the subwoofer the next day.
Try them you'll love'em!!! I also have the Yamaha 995 reciever with a Denon DVM-3700 DVD auto changer.

FANTASTIC!! BA out performs many vastly more expensive brands. You hear everything so clearly! Love all my Boston Acoustic Speakers!

Neighbors don't like it!

I started my collection about a year ago and as alot of you already know its like a drug. You are always out to buy more! I have the Yamaha RXV-2095 Reciever with a Toshiba DVD player and a 110 + 1 Yamaha CD player. The VR970's handle the power very well and have Nill distortion at very high levels. Its kinda funny but the harder you push them the better they sound. All of my Boston Acoustic speakers are wonderfull and look great. I recomend them very highly!

Great speakers these 970,s provide clean crisp midrange. tweeter has great highs and the built in subs have plenty of low end to provide you with exciting H/T and music sensations Im using 970,s front VR-12 center and CR-7,s for the rears. pioneer DVD. twister sounds like the tornado is going to take the roof off must here it to believe.

Thanks to everybody who posted about these speakers. I went down to the local music store and had them pull a set out to try. After trying Bose, JBL, KHL, Yamaha and Defenity speakers, the Bostons blew them away. My music taste is rock, country and classical music and this speakers are excellent on all these music formats. Going to be really enjoying my music from now on. Using them with a Denon AVR 3300 and Onkyo 540 CD Player. If you can find them they are worth the money.

beautiful highs, clear midrange, nice bass. Works best with classical music, string intruments, and acoustic guitars. Heavy rock suffers a bit(not too much).

the low end is great for music, but it doesn't do the job of a 15" sub-woofer does. If it went all the way down to 20 hz it would be different. The first few months of having these speakers I thought it was great, but after about 10 months, I'm wanting another 15" or 18" to back them up. They also don't seem to balance well on thick carpets.

These speakers are very great. I purchased them with the VR12 center(getting a vr10 is a very bad mistake). I'm using Energy RVSS surrounds. The front three work very well with each other, though I think that Boston did a bad job timbre matching the VR 12 and VR970. For the price, you'll be hard pressed to find a speaker that matches it. A speaker package close to the VR 970 is NHT's VT 1.2. I went with Boston for two reasons. The VT 1.2 has a passive sub-woofer and is not a very tall tower(causing the upper range to suffer). The second reason it the the VT 1.2 center does't have the comb filter effect the VR12 has. With the VR12, sound is heard the same throughout the room. Overall the VR970 works very well with whatever you throw at it. It handles movies the best, though music is done wonderfully. As with any speaker, moving it around can yield many different results. Switching the woofers inwards or outwards may do better for you. I also found placing the speakers at least 7 feet apart is the way to go. So do take the time to set them up perfectly. It's hard to do with a side loaded tower because you cannot toe them in very much. Anyways, make sure you audition this speaker before making your choice! You may not like it, but you'll probably love it!

I have been finding that my vr975's seemed to distort horribly, out of the blue, with this wild bass resonance type sound.... after several adjustments to the receiver and to the line level control on the back of the speakers, I found the problem! I had to push my speakers down on the floor with all my weight to get the spikes dug in good. The distortion I heard was the spikes and or base rattling against the floorboards! I had them turned all the way down because of this! Now that they are solidly in the floor, I turned them up and WOW! I was pleased with the vocal and midrange quality from the beginning and it gets better each day as they break in. The BASS is just AWESOME! I have two Paradigm Servo-15's and I have to say, I would not have bought the subs if I got the VR975's first. With these floor standing speakers, no sub is necessary unless you like it extreme (I have a particularly large listening room, and believe it or not, this is not extreme for me considering the room size and the level I have them set at for complete accuracy).... Well, at $1600 these are not cheap speakers, but I cant afford to play with the big dogs and spend 5-25K on speakers. I think that they are awesome for the price. I compared them directly to my Paradigms using the a/b switch from my listening position with my remote and all I can say is that the Bostons made me fall out of love with my Paradigms which I loved for 10 years.

A final note: for people who just like music loud, buy some paradigms for about 700 bucks. The Bostons are for people who enjoy accuracy and hearing every detail of the song. I feel like I am listening to every song I own for the first time because there is THAT much difference!

Sound absolutely superb. Clean and crisp highs and mids. Bass is just right and very controllable.

Reliability issues. I feel like they're going to fall over - and I'm using carpet spikes.

I've had reliability issues - but glad to find many of you haven't experience them. My first speakers each had different instructions as to how to place them. The left speaker showed to place the subs on the outside. The right speaker explained to place the subs on the inside??? A few months later, the built-in amp went dead. A few months after that, one of the built-in amps had a persistent humming sound. Now, I've had two fully functioning and great sounding speakers for about 6 months and I couldn't be happier (except of course if I paid much less than the $1,600 I shelled out like some of you did).

Despite the problems, I'd highly recommend these speakers to anyone looking for a very accurate and natural sounding speaker - and would buy another pair in a heartbeat.

I spent the last several days trying to detect the boomy bass in the BA VR 970's in my living room according to Eric's review. I did not detect any and suggest that perhaps the listening room must have affected the bass response. In fact, when Mr. Julian Hirsch, who has probably tested more speakers than any other person, tested the BA VR 960's he stated that the response is +- 2db to 20 hz but the low response was " an effect of the room characteristics". In addition, Eric auditioned the BA VR 975 which has a more powerful bass amplifier and, from what what I understand, a revoiced crossover. It is significant that all 20 of the other postings, presumably most of those individuals own VR 970's and use them in their home environment, have been 5 stars or best possible. Although I am not a salesman but a teacher, I also know of several others who sell many brands but have not posted who have the 970's in their homes. I have listened to many types and brands of speakers in my home and have found the BA VR 970's are the most natural I have ever listened to.

Greate highs and mids.

Bass is great for movie but a little boomy for music.

I listened to the VR975 and Klipsch KSP400 and KSP300 for couple hours at Tweeter today. All these speakers have great highs and mids, but the bass on VR975 is boomy for the music and not tight enough.

However, both are excellent for home theater as front speakers. With VR975, you should add a 200W (or more) sub to help it for movie if you want the floor shaking effect.
