I have four DX-9's powered by a two channel QSC GX-5 amp. They are wired in series providing an 8 ohm load to the amp, which in turn provides 500 w/ch, or 250 w/speaker. A couple of tips for the DX-9 enthusiast. First, these speakers benefit greatly from being off the floor. At 80+ lbs. a piece, this is no easy task, but well worth the effort. 1' seems to work well in my system. Second, I have yet to hear a speaker that doesn't benefit from equalization - don't be afraid to EQ to your liking. Third, clean power in prodigious amounts cannot be overstated. It's the difference that only the DX-9 will make, turning music from something that is heard into something that is fealt.

I bought my DX9's when Sears was having a close out sale. I paid a whopping $285 for a brand new pair. I had heard my cousin's D9's (the original Earthquake speakers) and really liked them but the DX9's are MUCH better. The high end and the mid range is far more clear and detailed. And the bass is the same super driving force of nature the D9's had. I can't turn my system up and play a CD because it makes them skip like crazy. I've tried dozens of fixes for that problem but nothing works. I have to record to something with a memory card to get full volume without skipping. I drive these beasts with a Kenwood Basic M2 which runs 340wpc at 4 ohms but that is a very conservative number. Testing reveals they produce much more power than that. For the time these speakers were produced better speakers were few and far between. They are definitely rock speakers. They play the full range of audio and they play it well. There are drop offs around 200hz to 300hz but you get that with 15" bass drivers. I've had better speakers for that range but not many. These speakers will not play with the same clarity and presence as the high dollar speakers of today but they blow anything under $5000 per speaker totally away when it comes to full range audio. And they are better than the vast majority of modern speakers in the upper ranges too. But there are some speakers that are more clear now. And the price tag matches their high quality. The stores that sell those speakers laugh when you talk about CV. And the company has made some real dogs but the DX9's don't fall into that category. They are excellent especially for their time period. I did hear a couple of sets of speakers that were better in those days but even then the price was way higher. One set I saw must have cost $10,000 each back in the 1980's. I only saw one set of those. Infinity made some speakers I thought were better but they had a much higher price tag. And they were only minimally better. And you would never get the volume out of them that you can from the CV's. These speakers make my mouse move around on my computer desk. They rattle the windows and the baseboard heaters. You can't scream over top of them and get anyone to hear a word you're saying. And the fuses keep them from getting blown. I've blown a few of those fuses too but I have given up trying to make myself deaf. They are very hard on your ears at the volume they produce. We're talking speakers that create a maximum of 125db according to CV. Put them in a small room like my den and they will rattle the nails out of your walls. I'm serious. You are very unlikely to ever find a set of speakers that play as LOUD as these do. But they play clean and crisp too all the way up to the point your amp gives out or you blow a fuse. They are amazing. At 101db from just one watt you are way ahead of what most speakers will produce. Hook these speakers up to a real hard driving amp (like my Kenwood) and you will be amazed. My son, who has a masters in engineering physics, listened to a whole lot of new systems during his college years. He told the owners of those systems they didn't produce sound like the DX-9's do. If you like in the country and want your distant neighbors to wonder where in the heck that noise is coming from these are the speakers for you. They can be heard at least half a mile away. I've been in audio shops that sold high end equipment and they people there freaked when I picked out speakers that sounded like my CV's. They were extremely expensive and it was only the tone of the speakers that matched up with my CV's. They can't match the volume because they start out at 89db or 90db at 1 watt. There is a huge difference in the ratings of these speakers with what's on the market today. People used to say the bass was sloppy on these speakers. They just didn't hear them driven by an amp that can produce the power and have the dampening to really push these speakers to the limit.

Cerwin vega audio is one of the best i have ever seen i have a pair of AT10s and they were a bang for my buck i had to replace the surrounds however that's typical with speakers that were made in 1988, however im writing this review because i have a cousin who a mc602 power amplifier which in case you didn't know is a mcintosh product that weighs a 155 pnds, the amplifier can produce up to 2400 watts of clean solid power enough to make your ears complain lol. If you know anything about cerwin vega dx9s you that they are rated at 400 watts and have a impedance rating of 4 ohm. Another thing you should know is that they have an efficiency rating of 101 Db which is absolutely awesome. They figure this rating at 1 watt and thee feet away from the floor speaker. Any how instead of making you read all this and knowing that half the world wont understand it im going to claim that Cerwin Vega is the absolutist best audio company from my view at least before they wont over seas in to Chinese land. Me and My cousin wanted to know what some cerwin vega's would do with this super weapon of mass destruction amplifer. One thing you need to remember is distortion kills and will effect your top and final sound out of your system before you even reach max volume we have two carver a 500x's that will pump this vegas pretty good and they would even make the tweeters shut off because of the safety in the crossover however with the Mcintosh Mc602 power amplifer we pulled 1200 watts out of one pair of dx9s and they took it like a champ, this is absloute loudest single pair of 15s ive ever heard,they didnt complain and they made you want to keep going except we were scared because the tweeters were not cutting out and we already had 3times the power rating on them but however the trusty old fashion american cerwin vegas took that for over an hour and they stilll work just fine and dandy.

These don't sound horrible like some Cerwin vega haters would like you to believe. No they don't have the resolution of something along the lines of magnepans, but they deliver the whole picture. Many speakers sound good and image well, but wince when you crank on them. I know of no other brand that can take abuse like Cerwin Vega. It is hard to enjoy something you have to baby and worry about. When I am concerned about absolute sound quality I throw on my Beyerdynamic Dt-990 Pros. I can't be the only one who would rather have the entire spectrum that is a little rough around the edges rather than an anemic little bookshelf speaker with superior resolution. They actually image quite well and have a very large soundstage with a nice amplifier like my crown xls1500 (the xls 1500/2000/2500 are hidden gems in the audiophile world). When playing games or movies with them it sounds like the sound wraps around you. I previously had an svs sb-02 5.0 set and this really doesn't leave much to be desired. Stereo receivers don't do Cerwin Vega's proper. I believe the people who complain about their sound do not have a proper source or high enough quality amplification. As much as I want to own a set of NHT, Magnepan, Vandersteen, etc they all fall short on delivering the whole picture, nice as they do sound. Even with compression style tweeters and 15" woofers they sound surprisingly nice. Incredible dynamics for movies and games. Never have to worry about damaging them, the only problem you may ever run into would be that foam eventually rots. Refoaming a woofer is a piece of cake though. I love my Dx-9's. I would only give them up for Re-38's, Vs-150's, Xls-15's, or Xls-215's.

I like many others bought mine new way back in the early 90's maybe late 80's .
Bottom line, I regret selling them to this day!! I have a Onkyo component system that applies the m5200 amp. You will hurt yourself before you hurt the speakers. I have searched for years to equal the Rock & Roll hammering ability they had. From C o C, to God Smack. The old Cerwin Vegas can pound it loud and clear. I have never grown up. I like my R & R hard and heavy. To those of you who have shall we say a more relaxed desired way to listen to your music..? so be it. Just dont tell me about how nice and pretty and costly your speakers are, and what poor quality the Cerwin Vegas are to the rest of "audiophile" world. take those costly pretty speakers to your end of the house and enjoy. If yo can hear them!! . . I will blow you, and the rest of the candy asses off the BLOCK with the kings of

I payed $900 for the pair brand new in the early 90's they guaranteed i could'nt blow them.Well i took it as a challenge hooked em up to my yamaha 500watt amp and leanded on them for about an hour and blew my yamaha amp.As owners of these awesome speakers know they are fuse protected 4ohm speakers.Well as the years after that and thousands of dollars in amps onkyo maranantz pioneer and sony i still have those dx-9's to this day,none of the amps though.i just after 20 years replaced the foam surrounds on them and they now grace my man cave not the living room anymore.I still rock the neighbohood out of their beds with them they ask me"What brand are those speakers EV'S" I say no but you have the v right.Cerwin Vega had it right the first time with the DX series they since had the RE and whatever series since ,but NOTHING come's close to those DX-9's by the way i had to replace the fusses in them because they were old!?!?AWESOME!

EXCELLENT at low-mid volume for any music style. The subs can't handle fast, heavy, double-bass (ex. Metallica) without distortion at volume levels high enough to split your spleen at 50 yards. No surprise though. They're 15's! At 50 feet, it may be possible. HIgh freq is great at all levels. Midrange is just as good at low-mid volume. At 'crack my skull' volume the 15's take over slightly more, but nothing a little change on the EQ can fix. Still exceptional for only a 6.5" mid! Although the cabinet looks great, it has drawbacks. It's size can cause problems for some people (even though, makes a good base for shelves). The seams are also a bit weak if you run them as hard as I do. I had to reglue and nail them and the supports together to cure the rattling after a several years of HARD ABUSE. After well over a decade it's finally time to re-foam one (the one that get's sun on it constantly), but no big deal. The kits are cheap! Even though I got them for around $500/pr on closeout, I wouldn't regret if I paid the normal $1k! Around 14 years and they're still rockin'!!

Call the Landlord! These CV's drop 104 db per watt. Huge bang for the buck. Take those sissy cubes and make a rear channel. You have to buy a vintage pair because nothing is made like this anymore.The bass is powerful and top end clean. As time has rolled on the DX-9's are more appreciated. You can use any amp with this speaker set. The large cabinets allow you to set things on them. If you gotta get a permission slip they are not for you. My woman loves to play em even though she does not like to admit it. You may have to re-foam a pair or replace a grill cloth but it is well worth it.

My neighbor put them out to the trash cause they have torn subs, But they still are the cleanest sounding thiunderous speakers I have ever owned. That includes the Jensen's and Sony's and more. Who would have thought.

Have pounded these speakers for 12 years and they are by far the best speakers for the $buck$. Pushed them with 35 watts up to 200 watts and they sound great. Be warned that these speakers have a great bass response and will make other things in your house rattle, ie: glass in picture frames, glasses in the kitchen cupboards, windows, your teeth. Care should be taken as to placement of other items in the blast zone.

Also, for the most part, my neighbors and wife are not as enthusiastice about these speakers as I am.

The cabinet is a veneered particle board and are very heavy. Which relates to they do not shrink or grow during humidity changes. and very heavy. You will need a hand truck to move these speakers.
