Strength:

LOUD....but clear as well!

Weakness:

Heavy, which in my opinion is a good thing for the woofers.

This is BY FAR the best speaker purchase I have ever made. I bought these speakers from Best Buy about 4 years ago going into college. They were the bomb in the dorm room. I remember once during the spring, a neighboring dorm complex sent someone over to complain about how loud the speakers were.

On another instance, I was playing em loud on 3rd floor and went up to 6th floor and visited some friends. I told them that vibration was my speakers 3 FLOORS BELOW! They didn't believe me so I called down to my roomate and when the phone rang he picked up and the sound stopped. The phone call blew the fuses in the speakers...BEAUTIFUL PROTECTION DEVICE!!!

The speakers to this day are working better than ever, and the best part is I got a 9 year warranty throught best buy on them. I would recommend these speakers to anyone...assuming you can get them still, they are no longer a main line of Cerwin Vega. I am even looking at getting the Cerwin Vega LW12 Sub to add to this system sometime very soon! I will forever be a buyer of Cerwin Vega products...the best money can buy in Home Theater...if you aren't loaded!

Strength:

Movies, classical music

Weakness:

large cabinets can consume a room

To date I've yet to be envious of someone else's speakers. My apartment is monstrous, so the large speaker size is comfortably dwarfed and the big sound they provide is welcome. Friends love the sound, and just like everyone else has commented, they can get mean and loud with no problems. On the flipside, I have some old jazz albums and classical cd's that fill the building very well. I hosted a millenium new years party with 160 people, and I'm still scrubbing champagne off the walls, and still getting the occasional compliment on how well the party turned out, especially the tunes. They are six years old now, and I will have them for another six. A friend brought his bose setup over to my house, thinking he was going to convince me. He walked out with his head between his legs. Bose sounds great, and I use their center channel, but a sub and a bunch of tiny speakers, sounds just like a bunch of tiny speakers should. It's an airy sound, and very "surrounding" but not real feeling. When you watch television at my house, it is not uncommon for people to respond to the phone ringing on tv. If you can, buy them.

Strength:

Very loud and clear highs

Weakness:

light on really low bass

I really love these speakers especially for the money. I have thrown everything from bass discs to classical music and they take it and keep on truckin. The real low end needs a little eq work at least in my room (basement) there is no help with floor resonances and stuff like that. I built a sub to help out with that also now i have a little too much bass for music so i turn the sub off. I teamed the re's with a ls-6c center chanel and the work great together. overall im very happy with them.

Good sounding speakers for rock and dance. Don't have to use my subwoofer when these are hooked up. Really kick !!! However for classical a bit unresponsive for my tastes.

There is absolutely no better speaker for the money. I've heard tons of speakers at high-end audio dealers that sound as good but are in the 1K range. They can indeed endure a great deal of power. To Pioneer's credit, I manage to blow my left re-30's fuse the other day playing a Cincinnatti Pops CD on my Pioneer VSX-505S. The track that was playing was a bunch of sound effects based on "Twister". The thunder clap was the final blow. To Cerwin-Vega's credit, they put a spare fuse in the fuse box. Those are some nice guys at CV!

I will have to agree the RE 30 is a LOUD SPEAKER! But I have a question, I am new into the high-end audio world and I have heard that speakers rated at 4 ohm reather then 8 ohms can damaage your receiver (Denon AVR 3200). So I have not used them with my new system. Is this correct?

These speakers are some of the best speakers you can get for this price range. Being an "audio enthusiast" as well as a former best buy employee in the audio
department, I feel that the RE-30's are, as far as value goes, the best
speakers around. Actually, anything in the RE series is a good deal, but
I especially like the 12's because they kick more than the 10's and the
midrange is better than the 15's (RE-38's). My roomates and I have put these
speakers through some serious testing, receiving complaints from four floors
up, the people above us had pictures falling off their walls. In case anyone's
wondering, I'm running them off a Techics SA-EX600 (120x2, 4 ohms), which is
another good value. Keep in mind that I'm a budget minded college student.

Summary:
great price, great bass response, good midrange, indestructable when compared
to other speakers in that price range.

These speakers are LOUD! But that is about it because I couldn't tolerate any of the upper range...it sounded horrible! Earpiercing is right! If CV put a decent sized midrange in this thing it would probably be a good speaker but until then...

These speakers seem to be pretty loud, but they distort really easily, especially the midrange. At low volumes, the midrange sounds muddy, and although they provide a lot of base, when I have my 100W/channel amp at half volume (the speakers supposedly can handle 250W) the base is unbelievably distorted and sounds terrible.

These speakers are the absolute best! I invested a lot of time looking for the best speakers available in my budjet and I am CONVINCED I have made the right choice. Fantastic bass and excellant clearity on the highs... I think you could hook these up to a clock radio and they would sound good!!
