Jason, what wiring method did you use for the bass? To get great bass with both movies and music, you should wire these speakers "full range" (using the "full range low level in" on the speaker and sending this to the "pre out" and "main in" on the receiver via y-connector). This helps bass tremendously.

Also what amp are you using? The key is to find an amp which MATCHES well with these speakers. I have found yamaha to match well, and have heard that marantz is a good match as well.

After break in, there shouldn't have been any edginess to the sound. Maybe an attribute of the recording?

Anyway, enjoy what you have.

Strength:

Very Powerfull, clean,smooth,detailed sound.

Weakness:

None

Recently my system consisted of 1 pair of AR3s upfront, the AR2c, and 1 pair of AR7 in the back, combined with a Velodyne FSR15 sub. This was a great system. I decided to try Def Tech. I recieved my BP2000tls yesterday, I moved the
AR3s to the back surround channels and sold the AR7s. Words cannot describe how awesome these speakers are. The Bps have such a wide open soundfield, with depth I have never heard before. With them toed in a little I also got the great detail that I normally got with direct rad speakers. I actually enjoy listening to Stereo music again. I have been
spoiled with 5.1 Digital music, that I stopped listening to
stereo music. But with these Stereo comes alive. I do not understand the people who say that these are hometheater speakers only. Music is so much fun on these speakers. Of coarse Hometheater is so much better than ever before. I still use the Velodyne crossed over at 40Hz to add a little more shake to what the Def Tech subs already offer. I love stereo subs. I can not say enough about how awesome it is.
My future purchases are CLR3000 center, and a pair of BP2002s for the rear.

Strength:

Full range, transparent, very natural sounding.

Weakness:

set-up.

There is nothing in this price range that compares on an overall performance level.
There are more detailed speakers available but none that sound more realistic or natural which is more important.
These speakers are suitable for critical stereo listening, regardless of music type or home theatre use. They are transparent enough to reveal the benefits of very high end electronics and sources. They are very dynamic with excellent base extension and are acceptable for home theatre use without a sub-woofer.
Notes:
They must be placed in free space, toed in and at least twelve inches from the rear wall.
They must be spiked to the floor with the supplied spikes.
They must be tri-wired ( I use Tributaries SCA 150 for the subwoofer full range in from the preamp and SP4 for the midrange/base and tweeters, which is the best value for money cable that I have found).
You must use a filtered AC power supply for the onboard amps, especially in a city. (minimum -Monster HTS 2000).
You must use a high quality, high current amp for the midrange/base and tweeter (preferably around 200W/ch).
Without careful set-up you will have a pair of heavy sounding, very uncontrolled base, unbalanced unpleasant speakers!
All of the above measures are necessary to control and tighten the subwoofer/base sysem and open up the natural soundstage with excellent depth and imaging capability.
With attention to detail and good ancilliary equipment you will have a system that is completely unmatched at its price level as a universal speaker for both music and HT.

Strength:

Lots of sound

Weakness:

Quantity, not quality

Great for filling a room, good for HT applications. Not very musical. Clinical at the best of times, and a little boomy. Midrange is harsh.

Good bass extension.

Decent for movies. Boring otherwise.

I really hate to post again, but Paul's review is pretty sparse and I would like to clarify some things. Clearly he has not heard the 2000TL's set up properly, driven by a nice DETAILED amp. If they are wired full range, they are NOT boomy. Placement is really critical too. I have heard some refer to def techs as laid back...but definitely NOT having harsh mids (actually most people point to the mids as one of the strong points for these speakers, and if anything there is warmth to the mids, not harshness). I wonder if Paul heard these speakers at home (preferably in a large room), fully broken in, toed in with no obstructions for the side firing subs, wired full range, and hooked up to a nice receiver/amp (like the dspA1). These may not be the end all in music reproduction, but to post a review like that with no details and no support is ridiculous.

Kevin, you should be able to find a set of 2000's (the older model)...check the audioreview marketplace. It will be much harder to find the 2000TL's for a great price, but it may be possible.

At worst, this is an excellent home theater speaker. With proper setup, this speaker is great on movies and music.

Enjoy.

Strength:

huge soundstage ground shaking sub and great transition between mid and sub

Weakness:

placement critical, play with it a lot, HEAVY

Well, here is the setup
Carver AV-505 amp
Marantz AV-9000 pre-amp
Def Tech BP2000TL Mains
Def Tech CLR2000 centre
Def Tech BP10B as surrounds
Pioneer DV-505 as transport

HT setup (ain't it obvious.)

I have to say I really like these babies, with these speakers I had to discard quite a few cds because they just sound horrible...ie, revealing as hell... Sound stage is huge. Can take anything you can possibly dish out. After initial break in, the tweeter has mellowed some and sounds smoother than before. Very happy about this setup...heavy buggers (130lb each!), so do not spike til you are sure of the positioning...I have the delivery men move them to the basement...God help me if I have to move them up to ground level...

Strength:

Sound great with a variety of material in both music and home theater.

Weakness:

Heavy. (Don't forget to attach the supplied feet for balance.)

I have had the 2000tl less than two weeks. I love them. After reading many other reviews, I must admit that I agree with much of what has been said. The full range low level in is the best connection for managing bass--definitely tightens up the low range. Being a teacher and taking a year off to get my master's, spending a lot of money on stereo equipment is something I can afford to do very infrequently. However, when Hawkeye Audio advertised these speakers at $1999 and took my trade-ins, it was too good of an offer to pass up. I am one of those who believe all of ones resources should be spent on getting the speaker of choice. So, if you can believe this, I use a Panasonic SAX6 receiver to drive them. Going against all advice, I wired the sub out to the full range low level in and have not found any sonic material to be missing. I love the sub level control on the receiver and use it to make minor adjustments for the varying bass content in music. (Having spent more than a few hours in studios with recording engineers, I know that mixing audio is far from an exact science.) A former professional bassist (New Jersey/New York and Nashville), and a former tuba major at The University of Iowa, I know music. I have sung with the Nashville Opera and Symphony Chorus, and performed with various orchestras and bands on both electric bass and tuba. For those who have difficulty achieving the sound they desire, I would suggest this. Clean your ears, adjust your rooms for the best acoustics (add/subtract carpeting, add/subtract wall hangings, try every imaginable speaker placement, etc.) and you'll gain a lot more in sonic improvement than you will in spending outrageous sums in speaker wire, amplification, and peripherals. I use my old BP 8's for surround and my old df1000 for the center. I use the hall setting on the receiver for orchestral music, the club setting for pop/rock, and the theater setting for surround sound. Minor adjustments in the center channel, surround speakers, and bass mangement are always going to be needed to keep up with those audio engineers who just can't seem to be born of the same genetic material, but c'est la vie. The 2000tl's are probably not the best speakers on the market, but they have a relatively small footprint (9" wide) and work great for all kinds of music and theater. I have experienced other speakers I prefer better for music, but not for home theater and none that do a better job for both at anywhere near the 2000tl price range. If your taste in music and video sound vary as much as mine, these are speakers to go with.

Strength:

Beautiful cabinet ,bipolar , clear highs/mids , AMAZING BASS !!!!!

Weakness:

So heavy , 125 lbs. !!! (doesnt really matter though)

These speakers are amazing . If your considering buying these speakers BUY THEM , and heres why : very clear highs and mids , the bipolar design produces sound the way it was meant to sound , the bass is so precise it can go down to 15hz ,which means you can really FEEL the bass ,2 15" 500 watt drivers !!! Very musical speaker (in my opinion) , perfect for home theater .
I have listened to many speakers within the $7000 price range and none of them can compare to the BP2000TL's, except the Energy veritas , but the veritas cant produce bass as well as the Definitives .Also , remember to bi-wire or tri-wire them , it makes all the difference . If you have any questions about the definitives , you can e-mail me at fathom_fan15@yahoo.com . My setup is :

Denon AVR5800 A/V reciever
Toshiba SD9200 DVD/DVD Audio Player
Mitsubishi HSU795 VCR
Runco DTV947 HD Front Projector (with Runco Scaler)
Stewart 80" 16x9 screen
Definitive BP2000TL
Definitive C/L/R/3000
Definitive BPVX/P (2 pairs for 7.1 setup)

I had a Dyn Countor setup that I bought based on reviews, although very good on music, it lacked the dynamics I was looking for in ht, after numerous speaker auditions I found the Def bp 2000 tl, I was blown away on how good they sounded, I also bought the matching def 2000 clr center, the center is very good, but not as good as the dyn countor center which I consider the best I have ever heard, I consider the Def bp 2000 tl speakers the best in there price range, having a built in powered sub is a big plus, I no longer have to keep trying to adjust separate sub woofers to match the front speakers

I have owned the BP2000tl for about 9 months. I use them as my front l/r in a home theater setup, driving with a Carver TFM25. The Def Tech's are absolutely the best sounding speaker I have heard in my listening environment for the money. The high end is bright, but has considerable depth, so that the sound field is very wide when listening to music (my first love). However, the bipolar design (and the vertical d 'Appolito config) offers excellent image placement for individual instruments and voices, and is outstanding with movies. The bass output is rock solid, and never boomy. With two 15"s and 500 watts each in a pair, you can feel it!. I have found no source that seems limited with these loudspeakers, and I have tried them all. Absent spending an extraordinary sum of money, I can't imagine having a better sound. If your layout permits you the option of towers, you should give these a listen. From Aerosmith to Jewel to Rebecca Pigeon to Shania Twain to Armageddon, I love em!
