I'm looking for a pair of Definitive BP-2000. It doesn't matter whether it is the TL or not. I've heard so much about these and been wanting to own one. The retail price is a bit steep, so I was hoping that I could find me a well kept and well maintained used pair. If anyone has these speakers and wants to sell them, email me with your asking price. My email address is kevin@infosim.com

Strength:

THESE SPEAKERS ARE PHENOMENAL FOR BOTH MUSIC AND HOME THEATER USE. YOU CAN FEEL THE BASS IN THE ENTIRE ROOM WITH THE 500 WATT POWERED SUBS. VERY DYNAMIC WITH THE RIGHT AMPLIFIER.

Weakness:

A LITTLE WEAK IN THE UPPER HIGH END FREQUENCIES NOT BRIGHT SOUNDING AT ALL.

VERY GOOD SPEAKERS. EXCELLENT VALUE FOR PRICE PAID. YOU COULD PAY 3TIMES WHAT THESE COST AND GET LESS SPEAKER.

Strength:

Clarity, depth, efficient and lots of bass

Weakness:

Odd smell when cranking 'em

I bought these babies in Lake Tahoe (of all places) last year. I was in the market for a speaker that would excel for home theatre as well as music. I was particularly interested in buying an efficient speaker. When I found out the BP2000 TLs had built-in 500W subs, and the reviews had been stellar, I started callin' around for the nearest dealer to audition them.

I went to Accurate Audio and Video in South Lake Tahoe and auditioned them. Oh my God, did they ever sound great! I was so thrilled I even bought the CLR2000 center channel too!

I drove home ever so carefully as it was snowing. I couldn't crash with my new toys!

Anyway, I lugged them out of my vehicle and into the house BY MYSELF. Yikes, the damn things weigh 120 pounds each! I carefully removed the packaging, even though I was dying to rip it off! There they were, 50" of Baldwin Piano finished things of beauty. Yes, Baldwin Piano makes the cabinets!

I hooked 'em up to my McIntosh MAC4300V receiver and Cal Audio Labs DX-1 CD player. I popped in the Pure Moods New Age compilation and was astonded at the clarity and range these speakers reproduced. I really was, and still am, amazed.

I later added a Denon AVR5600 DD receiver and have been having DVD movie night almost every Friday. The incredible realism and thunderous bass these babies reproduce has made me a favorite movie house for friends and family.

The only negative thing I must report is a strange, almost electrical smell that emanates from the right speaker when I am cranking the music. It is particlarly evident when I have been playing music with a lot of bass over a relatively long period of time. I contacted Accurate Audio Video and told them about this. They recommended I break in the speakers first and see if it still happens. Well, it still happens. I suspected the amplifier was getting too hot and this worried me. I was told that they would be happy to send me another amplifier board--it is easily replaced--if I wanted. I ended up taking off the heatsink to reveal the interior and then played music loud and heavy. I didn't smell anything. Do'ah!!!

I never replaced the amp board and the speakers still work flwalessly. All I did was shrug my shoulders and not worry about it. I have a five year warranty, so what the heck?

I am truly thrilled by these speakers. After having looked around I felt the BR2000 TLs were the best buy.

I love 'em!

Strength:

Dynamics, depth of soundstage

Weakness:

Heavy

I have lived with the 2000TL's for over a year. I have tweaked them a lot to get great sound. First I auditioned different receivers with them, and I found that higher end yamaha's match very well with this speaker and make for very natural and detailed music. I placed them so that there was a good amount of space behind the speaker in order for the rear drivers to fire, and I made sure that there were no obstructions on the sides of the speakers in order for the subwoofers to fire cleanly (i have the subs firing outward). I angled the speakers in a bit to improve imaging. But the biggest improvement that I found was in using one of the more "advanced" recommended methods of hookup for the subs (shown in the manual). Initially I had the speakers connected with only one speaker cable (the simplest method of hookup going to the low jumpers). I found the bass to be pretty good but a little loose and boomy at times. Then I bought a y connector and hookup up the speakers via "full range low level in". I ran a y connector from the "pre out" of the receiver to the "main in" on the receiver and the "full range low level in" on the speaker, and the cable I had in the low jumper is moved to the "mid" jumpers (as shown in the manual). This improved bass DRAMATICALLY!!! Bass became very tight and very well defined, and it became deeper too! Before I could not clearly distinguish bass notes in certain songs, but now the clarity of the bass was tremendous...something which I did not necessarily expect from a powered tower. So after a long break in period and these hookups, I find myself enjoying these speakers with music even more than home theater (although they are amazing in this regard too). Definitely audition these at home using my recommendations for bass management...you should be very, very impressed.

Strength:

Excellent guts and glory speaker for home theater, looks, flexibility with hookup, spacious soundstage

Weakness:

Boomy bass on most music, difficult placement when trying to blend the bass, a bit dry sounding and can get bright and metallic on some material

For movies, these speakers are the ticket. For someone who uses their system for music 60-70% of the time, like myself, there are better speakers out there and for less money.

Try as I may, I couldn't get the bass "bloat" out of my room. I spent nearly my entire month of in home trial trying to dial the bass in. I'd move them here and there and turn the level up and down and mess with the other settings on the speaker and my processor and in the end, I still had too much boom to the bass. For theater, it sounded great. For music, it destroyed the rest of the audio spectrum.

While the bass was the biggest problem, they could get metallic and edgy sounding on some rock and electric jazz material. This characteristic was not nearly as annoying to me as the bass.

My set-up now includes a seperate subwoofer and Magnepan speakers all around and it sounds phenominal. While my room can't be totally ruled out as different speakers and subs interact differently with a room, I can't help but to believe the problem was with the speaker's own ability to keep the bass under control. I returned them within my trial period.
