Forgot to post my system (may help with some readers) receiver - Pioneer Elite vsx-45tx DVD - Panasonic rp-91k cables - Kimber 8vs (mids) bi-wire with Kimber 4vs (I found that the bi-wire setup opens up the soundstage even more) for the sub I used acoustic research master series audio interconnect cable opitical - again AR masters digital coax - AR masters and a monster power conditioner 3600 Again test these buggers out, for music it could go either way BUT for HT this system CANNOT BE BEAT FOR THE MONEY. (and thats the bottom line) |

Strength:
Excellent for home theater. Dual built in subs. Very solidly built. All encompassing sound field.
Weakness:
Many other better speakers in similar price range for music. The Def Techs are very unstable, even with the outriggers (which are way too small). Mid range overpowered by excessive high end and strong bass. Quality problem with first ones I brought home. For clarification - I'm not an extreme audiophile. I am, however, a very critical listener. I initially purchased the BP2002TL's (with Def Tech center & surrounds) and a Denon AVR4802 receiver to replace my 18 year old excellent "non HT" stereo system (a Denon integrated amp and Ohm speakers). While the Def Tech's are truly awesome for HT, I could not get comfortable listening to them for music. Key point to remember with all reviews - Every person is different, and their ears hear different sounds, pitches, timbres, than the next person. Because one person doesn't like the sound doesn't mean they are bad speakers, or you won't or will like them. I liken good quality speakers to hi-line luxury autombiles. BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Porsche, Jaguar are all excellent cars in their own right. Each has their particular strength/weakness which attract or detract various people. Doesn't mean one is better or worse than the other. Same with speakers. You have to know what is important to you, and shop accordingly. I initially misunderstood what was important to me when putting together my first HT surround system, and went with the Def Techs. I eventually exchanged them for Paradigm Reference Studio 100's. (Using my car analogy, I'd liken the Def Techs to a luxury SUV with a big V-8. Able to go anywhere, just not much finesse and lacks precise handling. Paradigm Reference Studio 100's are more like a Mercedes or Lexus. Very smooth and excellent handling). O.K. - sorry to get carried away with the car analogies. I'm sure you get the point. I also returned the Denon AVR4802 (a great reciever), and upped the ante in power and performance by going to separates - Anthem AVM 20v2 Pre amp and Anthem MCA 50 amp. Mated with the Paradigms, it is an awesome combination. The Paradigm 100's like lots of power, and the Anthem delivers. Def Techs are an outstanding speaker for HT and a good buy for what you get. They are great speakers for certain people. Just not for me. Also, I did have a QC problem with them as well - The first pair I brought home were defective. The amp in one of the 2002's had a constant hum, regardless if the speakers were powered up. The amp was defective. The dealer let me borrow their well broken in floor model for a couple weeks until new ones came in, so I had a true opportunity to listen to "broken in" 2002's. I found for music they lacked a smooth response throughout the mid range. There seemed to be a hole in the sound. Lows were really strong, and the highs (tweeter) tended to be a little harsh. I also thought they overly "colored" the music, particularly with the bass. I found myself constantly adjusting the bass response on each speaker. For HT, though, they were really cool. I liked the idea of the sub's built in. Of course, with dual subs, you get some earth shattering bass (had my dog running for cover during a thunderstorm scene in one DVD!). Generally, I agree with the positive reviews on these speakers when it comes to HT, but I disagree with those that feel they are great music speakers. If you're willing to compromise on the music side (i.e. occassional background music), Def Techs are a great choice. If you really enjoy listening to quality music, and are willing to compromise a little on the HT side (which in my opinion has a lot more flexibility in terms of compromising), I'd recommend you audition several others, including the Paradigms, B&W, Dyn Audios, Vienna Acoustics, etc. Similar Products Used: Paradigm Reference Studio 60, 80 & 100's, Ohm Walsh 2 (18 years old but still going strong), B&W CDM9nt, DynAudio 72, Vienna Acoustics, Klipsh (horns way too harsh) |

Strength:
HEAVY, hey man there is a 12 inch sub, it better be heavy. That nondirectional sound.
Weakness:
none so far Just got these puppies last weekend, so there is still alot of breaking in to do. They sound fantastic, its all about the soundstage. Im always checking to see if the centre is on or not. Wife loves them too. Blew the Paradigms completely out of the water, two different leagues. The B&W cm4's were close but Im mostly into HT and these things are great. Gladiator in the demo room was awesome, gave the movie theatre feeling to you, it was weird. 2002tl + 2500 centre + BPX surrounds Similar Products Used: Tested the Energy C7, Paradigm's (lacks a good tweeter), Monitor Audio Silver (nice give them a try), B&W cm series (also nice give them a try) |

Strength:
POWERFUL bass, phenominal mid range, beautiful sound stage.
Weakness:
Pretty heavy at 71 lbs. EACH, but weight is to be expected with quality. The "balancing out riggers" that came with the speakers to help keep them from tipping over, I feel should have been pre drilled and fitted with brass fittings for ease of employment, like the standard foot pegs are... it wasn't s huge deal to do it, and I can see (after doing it myself) why the directions recommend having someone else help you. These speakers are my first "large speaker" purchase. I listened to them in the show room, I looked at the reviews, and NOTHING could have prepared me for the listening experience that awaited me once I got them home!! My living room is a little smaller than the demo room at the store, so the two powered twelve's that dwell within the cases of my 2002TL's LITERALLY shook the house. One of the first tests I did with my 2002TL's was to try the THX sound test found on the Star Wars Episode I & II DVD's, it will take you through speaker phase etcetra, but then it takes you through the 200 hz - 20 hz bass test... WOW!! quoteing Definitives latest news letter "foundation clutching bass"!! I was gitty afterwards. I felt like someone had just handed me the keys to a Ferrari and said "have fun". I can't say enough about these speakers, they are the perfect choice for me, they're right dead center between the bottom of Definitive's big speaker lineup and the very top. One other reason I chose the 2002TL's was that they are the first of the lineup of their tower speakers that have "4" mid range speakers 2 front, 2 rear for sound stage immaging off of the rear wall. |

Strength:
Huge, huge sound stage! Awesome powerful BASS! Great value. Wonderful build quality and looks.
Weakness:
Heavy! I have been enjoying these speakers sense 1999. I am very pleased with their performance in all areas! I believe these to be the most musical speakers in the Bipolar Power Tower series. I am in the Army and have to move around a lot and the BP 2002TL consistanly sound wonderful no matter what living room have had them in. I have however found a few things that make them sound even better. (1) place them about one and a half feet from the back wall, this lets the speaker take advantage of its Bipolar Technology. (2) place them an inch or two in front of your TV or entertainment center, this keeps you from smearing your sound stage. (3) Place them about five to six feet apart from each other, any more then that seems to hinder their sound stage. (4) Toe them in pointing towards the listeners sweet spot, when seated at the sweet spot you should only see the front of the speakers face, not the sides. This will set your sound stage. You will swear your center speaker is playing even though you are listening to two channel music. (5) Place them so that the subs are faceing inward, this tightens the bass, and adds detail. (6) I always use the supplied spikes, install them so the speaker is slightly tilted back. This helps define your sound and tilting them back adds a touch of air to music and movies. (7) Lastly I Bi-wire these speakers. I take out all but one jumper leaving that jumer installed between the midrange section and the subwoofer section. This seems to make voices sound more detailed and natural sounding. Note these speakers take a long time to break in, about two months of normal use. For the money I feel these speakers have no weakness to my ears. Buy these speakers you will love them! This is my system: Pioneer Elite Pro-520HD (TV) Denon AVR-3300 (receiver) Sony DVP-S530D (DVD) Comcast digital (Cable Box) Definitive Technology Speakers: BP2002TL (front & Back) C/L/R2002 (center) Pro-Sub200TL (center speaker Sub) Power Field 15TL (LFE Sub) Philips Pronto (remote) Tara Labs Component video cables. ITS STILL ALOT OF MONEY BECAUSE I LIVE IN CANADA I HAVE BEEN READING THE REVIEWS OF OTHERS ABOUT THESE SPEAKERS AND I SEE MOST OF YOU ARE USING THEM FOE HT. NOT ME. I LOVE MY STEREO SOUND. 2 SPEAKERS ONLY. THERE IS A COUPLE OF THINGS TO MAKE THESE SPEAKERS SHINE #1 IF YOU LIVE IN THE GTA DONT LISTEN TO THEM AT BAY BLOOR RADIO. IF YOU DO YOU WONT LIKE THEM. I LISTENED TO THEM AT A FRIENDS HOUSE FIRST. PLACEMENT IS THE FIRST KEY. SECOND IS POWER I HAVE 2 MONO BLOCK AMPS 625W RMS ONE TO EACH AMP (BIG IMPROVEMENT!!.WIRE I USED TO THINK THAT GOOD WIRE WAS A WAST OF MONEY AND IT WAS BECAUSE I HAD BOSE BUT WITH GOOD SPEAKERS YOU NEED IT. Strength:
warm, clean sound. I love the tweeters and mids on the 2002.
Weakness:
Heavy as hell. I have not yet bought these speakers but am planning on buying them by month end. However, I have listened to them a total of three times and am amazed at their sound. Some people think that they are mainly HT speakers but they are also great music speakers. Before listening to them I demo some $10,000 B&W speakers (model # escapes me) that were being pushed by an Integra 7-Channel amp and a Krell Pre/pro and was not convinced that I would get an $8000 difference in sound. An Adcom Amp and pre/pro was pushing the 2000TL (I don't remember these model #s either - I think the amp was the 7500) and I wanted to get them there and then because they sounded that good to me. The B&W were excellent but not significantly so. I am mostly into Jazz and classical music and lots of movies and these will greatly satisfy my needs. I hope to mate them with the new Outlaw pre/pro and 7-channel amp. |

Strength:
Slim, Aesthetics, very powerful bass, nice soundstage.
Weakness:
None really. I bought these speakers about a year ago and have been loving them ever since. They are however, not for everyone. As Greg said below, you won''''t get the same kinda sound you would from say, Martin Logans. I also listen to Jazz and Rock, and these speakers can''''t be beat for their price. The only thing I DON''''T like about them, and it''''s more my fault than Definitives, is that I live in an apartment, so I can''''t listen to them at their full potential. I like to pop in the occasional Metallica and rock the building for a bit, but I mostly use them for watching tv and movies and what not. I have them as main in conjunction with a CLR2300 center channel and a pair of BP10s for surround all fed through a Integra DTR 7.2 receiver. I''''m not best with words, guess that''''s why I''''m in engineering.....You just need to go listen to them, trust me. Awesome awesome speakers!
