Strength:

Will play at very high volumes with no stress(the speakers not your ears),good build quality.Great for HT,ok on music.

Weakness:

The high frequency reproduction is a bit harsh, the sub is slow.

The Definitive Tech. 3000 are great speakers if you are into HT.They play at high volumes with no stress, will dig low and hit hard.

As far as music goes its a far from audio nirvana. Those who give these 5/5 never compared this to the likes of Monitor Audio GR60's or Contour 3.3 Dynes lets not even talk about Wilsons.

I have a real High End setup at home and I did compare these brutes to my current speakers(Dynaudio 3.3).On film the Definitive are more impressive, due to the low energy of the 18" dinosaur side sub.

When you switch to music like jazz, clasical, acoustic or any other genre with finesse and real detail you seethe Def Tech is a ghetto blaster in nature.

The highs are agressive, this translates what most point out as detail. Its not detail.

The midrange and upper bass are quite clean and sound good.

The bass(sub) if set well will not overpower but is a bit slow.

The Definitive are worth 5/5 as HT units,3/5 for music and for the audiophile are simply not recomended.

I advise anyone with deeper pockets to lend his ears and listen to these Dynaudio Contour 3.3,Monitor Audio Gold Reference 60(I did listen at the store)and who can forget the Wilson WATT/PUPPY.The Wilsons are very expensive but will give you THE benchmark in neutrality, imaging, definition and punch(slam).

Strength:

Excellent low Bass
Clear mids and highs

Weakness:

The speaker weighs a ton, hard to move with one person.

I have used the BP3000's for 4 months now and have had no buyer regret. They are ample in handling anything I can throw at them. They are sometimes overpowering on the Bass, so these speakers are a must for Bass lovers. I can't even handle the Bass when set beyond the half way point. My listening area is about 20x32 feet. I have the speakers set up with a Lexicon DC-2, Sunfire Theater Grand Amp.

Strength:

timbre matched with LCR3000 and BP2002's, abundance of power, Easy to Position in almost any room, Build Quality, Sound Quality, Customer Support, Tri wire capable.

Weakness:

VERY HEAVY! Top collects dust easily (black laquer) No variable sub crossover.

I am using a Krell HTS with Krell 25a and 250a3 amps, Sony DVD7700 and Sony DSS with Nordost Blue Heaven Speaker wire and Interconnects and a Monster Power Conditioner / Distributer...with that said, let me add that I upgraded from a Sunfire TG and Signature SG.

I Love these Speakers, they dont have the high freq clarity of the ML's, but ML's dont have the mid, mid bass or bass extension of the BP's...The NHT's dont have the Muscle of the BP's, both ML and NHT's were hell to set up properly in different rooms, especially the ML's. I used two Sunfire True Subs and could not get the crossover points right to make it sound seamless with the NHT or ML's. The NHT subs could not/would not compare with the Sunfire subs, so lets forget those. I like the Sig Cinema Grand amps bieiring with voltage and current, especially with the ML's, but worked well on the BP's.

Heres the killer part of the BP's, you dont need a seperate SUB, in fact EACH speaker has its own sub to fill the room with LFE/Bass, making it easier to tweak each speaker instead of a single sub for the entire room..the BP's give a HUGE sweet spot, as opposed to a very small an finite sweet spot for any other individual sub.

The ML's look nice, but the BP's mean business, the sound outside of high feq clarity is Superior, I have yet to distort these speakers, I have cranked these up the point the lights dimmed and I couldnt see straight, especially in HT mode. The center speaker dialogue is a bit weak, but some tweaking on the pre amp will fix this. (also shows someone didnt SPL tune each speaker!)

Musically the BP's are nice, I prefer the ML's musically, but I play HT about 70% of the time, and Music 30%. I would also say to those nay sayers, try different interconnects and a power conditioner, makes a big difference, also try differnt placements, as well as tweaking the bass a bit on the back of the speaker itself, this will take some trial and error, but well worth it. (The Krell HTS does not have bass/treble or crossover settings, and really doesnt need them as they pass a clean signal)

If you are a music fan get a seperate system for music, if you are really picky, you wont be happy until you have a full Mark Levinson system and will bash anything short of it.

I upgraded to the Krell from Sunfire when I wanted more power for the ML's, they REQUIRE allot of power to sound nice, whereas the BP's dont. The Krell 250a/250a3 fit the Bill for more power, but still couldnt get the mid/bass I wanted...Th BP's filled this need and then some.

I highly recommend the BP's, but lets have to be honest, they arent a AAA rated speaker, but they will satisfy 99% of the market, they are a bit pricey, but there are deals to be had, especially in a package deal, for HT, they are UNBEATABLE!

Strength:

Strong bass, smooth mids, not overly bright highs

Weakness:

size, price, placement sensitivity

For those that complain about the bass of this speaker, try stuffing a towel in the port. Makes the bass tighter and more musical. In my room the pots are set at about 10 oclock. Try it you'll like it.
I recelntly hung a folded towel over the back of the speaker to soften the reflected energy ( I have paneling ) and this makes a much smoother sound and bring the vocals well into room. Very impressive.
I like the speakers, especially with my tweaks, but a 5 is reserved for something really extraordinary in both sound and price (I haven't found it).

Strength:

Every aspect of this speaker is outstanding for any application; including music

Weakness:

F*cking canadians who would like to own 8000.00 speakers...
Wish they'd stick to the Bose pages

Lets just say that those of us who own these speakers probably have heard Dynas, Martins and B&Ws....and decided that there still is a thing called value.

Quite simply, you cannot beat these for the money-period.

Strength:

easy to drive , plays loud

Weakness:

bass not tight , lacks extension

This is a follow-up to a 1999 review of the def-techs. After hearing the PSB Sratus Goldi , the newer Legacies , and Krix Euphonics , all which are appx. $2000 less than the Def-Techs (which leaves enough money for a good sub) , the rating I gave the 3000s was too high. I sold my def-techs and purchased the Krix with a Velodyne sub - much more musical than the def-techs. Look around before spending this much money.

Strength:

Extreme Low end without distotion. Mids and highs crisp and clear.

Weakness:

They are not for the extreme purist. The low end takes time to balance w/out boominess. Heavy!!!!!!

Ever since I first heard these speakers I was impressed. Try for a demo the THX tone at the beginning of a so encoded tape or dvd. They will shake the fillings from your teeth. I did find that the low end was difficult to balance with the rest of the speakers output. For the first week I constantly adjusted the volume control on the back of the speaker untill I finally had a good low end without sounding like a fm radio broadcast. Placement was a critical factor as well.
The bottom line is I love them and cannot find their equal at even twice their price.
Home theater enthusiasts will love their soundstage
as well.
Once you take your time to adjust them to your surroundings youll never regret the purchase.

Strength:

Big subwoofer, big rating on the amp.Good quality drivers.Built to last.Nice a la Mirage design.

Weakness:

Highs too harsh, midrange sounds quite good but bass lacks detail.

The Definitive will do a great job in a HT setup, power and a good level of sound quality. For a DTS setup they impress right away, big bass, good midrange and clear highs.

When you switch to music they are less impressive, unless all you listen to is rap and pop. This type o music is axed
on boom boom beats and piezo electric El Cheapo synth bips and bops.

Now if you listen to Jazz,Classical or acoustic music the Definitive are far from a good choice.

Still even most reviewers who claim to be experts will overrate these speakers.Home Theater mag gave a 97/100 rating, this clearly shows how to give scores away.Hey its HT Mag so for HT use I have to agree here.

Anyway the Def.Techs deserve a 5/5 for HT use,and a 3/5 for music.3/5 not a single point more.

Now I used these with a INTEGRA DTR 9.1 THX Ultra reciever, one of the three best recievers, period. The source was my trusty SONY ES DVD/SACD player.I compared the Def.Techs directly to my Dynaudio Contour 3.3s and tothe brand new MonitorAudio Gold Reference 60s.Both were much more detailed and had better mudrange. The Dyne highs were in a class A land, way up there with the very best speakers.

I could not make an A/B comparison with the B&W Nautilus 801,the 801 is awesome on music and simply shines on HT.
The 801 has 15inch woofers,it can play as loud from what I recall as the big Def.Tech with a lot more puch, the bass hass a shape, its fast and accurate.

So I think that is all, just dont make a mistake go and audition the big Dynes,Monitor Audio and the big B&Ws.Before you speand your money.
