I expected a lot from these...with the large midrange piston area, the self powered woofer, the thick cabinets...What I heard was boomy, thin, unnatural sound that seemed like it was tailored to the masses. Treble clarity was non-existent. Vocals were muffled. Midrange was definitely dropped to favor an overly warm and boomy sound. It didn't take me long to bypass these. For a little more, the Legacy Focus (what I ended up with) is so much better. If you want boom...do yourself a favor and buy a self powered sub for 1/4 the price.

I have done quiet extensive research on these speakers before I bought them one month ago. For those of you sniffing at these speakers, I would said your judgement might be a bit premature. Since these speakers needs extensive break-in time (at less 60 hrs of loud playing), your in-store-audition does not reflect the true quanlity of these speaker (for 1. they do not sound good fresh out of the box. 2. the base needs extensive fine-tuning to match the room and most stores do not do a good job in this respect.), you really have to take them home and live with them for a while. It's been a month now, and they just keep getting better everyday. For the past week, I am having a hard time finding a pair of in-store speakers, regardless of the price, that can beat the BP2000.

Weakness:

None for the money

First of all, I want to address all of the negative reviews on this speaker. The last one, if he even had them, where prabably the TL's. It's always interesting that most of the negative reviewers almost never list their electronics. Either they don't have any, or are using a 50 watt used Pioneer, and zip cord for cable.

My theater one consists of,
17x25x8 dedicated room, closes completely
Mitsubishi 70 inch rear projection
Acurus Act3 5.1 A/V preamp
custom built center in the Mitsu with 6.5 Kevlar mids, titanium tweeters, and a Sony ESD1000P preamp used to eq and crossover to a Energy ESXL12 sub for the center alone.
DefTech BP2000 fronts (1 300 watt powered 15 each)
2 NAD THX2400, running mono center speakers, 300 watts each
2 Adcom 300 watt 565 monoblocks for top of BP2000's
Paradigm P90 Monitors for the surrounds (2 powered 8's each)
2 Marantz MM700 200 watt mono's for the top of the P90's
2 DefTech 325 watt 15tl's for the .1
All MIT Terminator II bi-wires and interconnects
Meridian 563 24 bit upgrade D/A
Rega Jupiter Transport
Marantz LV520 Laserdisc
Toshiba 2109 DVD (Mitsu 70 only has S-video, great picture)
Panasonic Hifi VHS
4DTV Digital/Analog 10 ft (not the little directtv 18")
This system was put together over the last 5 years.
It rocks, shacks the house (slab), and plays music better than most of the negative reviewers have ever or will hear.
3300 watts total, 4-15's, 1-12, and 4-8's, all powered

Any serious audiophile spends countless hours reviewing prospective products, and would not write such trash. They would either not comment or say they didn't care for it, giving their objective views, not slams. Please go back to your video games, or your boombox.

Most of these wanabe reviewers miss the point of this speaker. It does a great job as a front A/V speaker. Set up properly with good equipment they play music effortlessly with a lot of air, and a very large soundstage. The bass can be dialed in properly if you can read the manual.
You can not get more bang for the buck, period. I travel extensively for business and stop in mid-fi, and high end stores all over the west, listening to high priced, over rated equipment and speakers. I've been to CES in Las Vegas several times. Most speakers are set up improperly with back acoustics, as are most stores. Was in a store recently that had Martin Logan Prodigy with Krell, and a Sony SACD player. The room was bad, the salesman had no SACD discs, and was playing them way to loud with homemade CD's. The only proper audition is in your home with good equipment. Don't think that a $100.00 CD player, with a Receiver that has a 10 ounce power supply is going to make these speakers take you to audio nirvana. The speaker is the last thing you hear, but speakers are like computers, garbage in, garbage out. Sorry for the rant, been an audiophile for many years, and this kind of crap needs to be addressed. If AudioReview won't, I guess I will.
I have 2 other theaters, one with a Denon 4800, and the Ifinity Overture 1, 2, and 3's. all with powered subs built in, with a Velodyne HGS12 sub, over 3000 watts also. a New Sony DVP-S9000ES DVD/SACD player. A Toshiba 55X81 HDTV Ready, Mit Terminator 2 cables, etc. I won't even get into my bedroom B&W, tube 2 channel system.

Similar Products Used:

Paradigm P90, Vandersteen 2ci, B&W CDM7SE, Infinity Overture 3,2, and 1. Own them all not just auditoned.

This is the best speaker for moth music and HT you can by for under 10K! I've auditioned many others in my home; you can't always judge by what you hear in a store.

Any true "audiophile" knows that definitive is a great speaker-FOR HOME THEATER. Any true audiophile out there would also know that Legacy are one of the best speakers out there....A lot better than definitive. I can't give the Deftechs a 1 rating, because they are not below average. But I'll give them a three for being a great Movie speaker.

There's an electronics shop in the Uptown area of Minneapolis that I've wanted to check out for a few months now. One of the speaker lines that they carry is Paradigm, which has received numerous glowing reviews lately. Paradigm has a bipolar set that supposed to really rock the house. It's called the Eclipse/BP Tower Speakers.Equipped with my new TDK speaker testing CD, I checked out Stereo Land. There were two people working the small shop, and I got the new guy. This was fine; because, I've really done my homework and don't have many questions at this point. I convinced the "new guy" to drag the big Paradigm Eclipse/BP towers into the listening room.

The setup was a Marantz SR-870 Pro Logic receiver (110 watts x 3 for the LCR and 75 watts for surround). The player was the Toshiba 3006 DVD. Also connected were the matching Paradigm center channel speaker (CC-450), dipolar Paradigm surrounds (ADP-450) and the Paradigm Servo-15 Subwoofer. We plugged in Twister and played it loud.

Let me say, "This configuration kicked butt." I could happily own this system. The home theater experience was terrific. I would rate it better than the Polk RT20P towers and on par with the Definitive Technology BP2002's, but it is not better than the Definitive Technology BP2000's, and it's not as good of a value either. I'll explain why I say this in a minute.

After listening to the system in home theater mode, I asked to play my test CD in the Toshiba 3006 DVD player. First, I listened without the 15-inch powered sub online. Compared to the BP2000's, the dynamic range was lacking. The BP2000's just have a much fuller and more complex sound. With the BP2000's, the bass guitar in the blues number is alive, and if you were to close your eyes, you'd swear that it was coming at you from across the table. With the Paradigm Eclipse, it was off in the background and not nearly as live sounding. Even with the Paradigm 15-inch servo sub added, the quality did not match the music ability of the Definitive Technology BP2000.

At first, I thought that the Eclipse towers sounded cleaner than the BP2000, but I quickly realized that they just didn't have the dynamic range of the BP2000's. There were complexities of the music that were just missing. One reason for this may be the driver configuration. The Paradigm Eclipse towers have only four drivers apiece. Matching front and back it has a one-inch high-frequency driver and one eight-inch bass/mid range driver. The BP2000 has twice as many mid-range drivers and it has the 15-inch sub built into each speaker (with the two high-frequency drivers, there are a total of seven drivers per BP2000 tower- verses four with the Paradigm Eclipse).

I tried to justify the better quality of the BP2000's by saying that the pair of Paradigm Eclipse Towers cost $1000 less than the BP2000's, but this is really not true. While the actual Eclipse Towers are only $1900.00 a pair, you must add the powered sub to get even close to comparing the two sets. The 15-inch, 400 watt servo powered sub is $1,500.00. Now, I know that "experts" say that subwoofer frequencies are omnidirectional, and you're not supposed to be able to tell from where the sound is coming; however, I could tell where the bass was coming from with the Paradigm. Frankly, in order to match the quality and balance of the BP2000's, I would have to have two of these powered subs. So, let's compare the two sets in value:

Paradigm

Paradigm Eclipse/BP Towers, $1,900.00 pair
Paradigm CC-450 Center Speaker, $500.00
Paradigm ADP-450 Dipolar Surround Speakers, $900.00 pair
Paradigm Servo-15 Subwoofer, $1,500.00 each
Total with only one subwoofer, $4,800.00
Total with two subwoofers, $6,300.00
Definitive Technolgy

Definitive BP2000 Towers, $3,000.00 pair
Definitive C/L/R 2000 Center Speaker, $650.00
Definitive BPX Bipolar Surrounds, $798.00
Total $4,448.00
As you can see, you get a lot more speaker for your money with the Definitive Technology BP2000 set, and I really believe that you would have to add an additional sub to match the quality and balance of the BP2000. If you added the 2nd sub, the Paradigm set would be nearly $2k more than the BP2000 and it still would not match the music quality or the home theater power. However, that's just my opinion. With the Paradigm Eclipse/BP being one of the best sounding sets I've heard, I encourage you to audition this one to make your own judgement.

These blow. They take a few off-the-shelf drivers and stick them in a box - that's all these are. For this price range, go for a real speaker like Linn or Revel. The tonal quality of these are sooo much better for the same price, it's not even funny.

I listened to these speakers for about 5 minutes too long. For 3 grand I'd buya pair of Martin Logans and a better CD player. The highs and mids sounded OK.
But the bass was muddy. I liked the sound of the new Pro Monitors better. Alot
cleaner in the mids. I guess I like cheap speakers(Pro Monitors $350 a pair), with sub $700.
