I have the Definitive DR 7 bookshelf model. I purchased one pair from a guy who stated they were ugly, and plain looking. I contacted Definitive about them because lack of finding a owners manual on Definitives website. They emailed me back with the frequency range, and a recommended power amp rating of 20 watt - 250 watt amp to operate them with. They stated they originally cost $249.00 a pair for bookshelfs, and $299.00, for the tower model. I've been running them through a Rotel pre-amp, and an Onkyo power amp, (at 150 watts per channel). The highs are very good, with the lows being very very good. The mid sound is very good also. I've aquired two pairs of them since. Nothing wrong with having spares I guess. Downs if any is they made the cheap version on a speaker cover, which I've had to repair on two of the 6 I now own. I'm a poor man audiophile. So if you are just starting as a audiophile nut, (FIND A PAIR OF THESE, AND ENJOY). I paid $40.00 first pair, $60.00 2nd pair, $100.00 for third pair and matching center channel. |

I found these speakers on craigslist (Definitive Technology DR 7 Towers). Not really knowing what they were. I grab them and took them home. It took me awhile to fully appreciate these speakers for what they are. A guess because I'm not a big audiophile. Nor have I really had the chance to listen to any real top of the line audio gear.

Just for the heck of it, I challenged my adiophile friend with the$ 60k B&W "rock star" and 4 amp set up to a duel.. Here is the set up- My NAD 25 watt integrated amp and my DR 7's to his system. We used his high end CD player in his environment. His room is 25 by 35 with A frame roof. He played 4 of his favorite comp pieces, I played 4 of mine. We both felt my system at 1/100th of the price, was 98% of his. The lowest octave was the only thing missing....that could be had for a good sub, but rarely do I need that bottom 20-30hz. It was still present, but most likely 5-10db down. He got spanked!

Strength:
Very good bass for size and of course cost.
Weakness:
Little on the Plain Jane look. Speaker Grill could look better, and hold up better. Well this is one of the best $40.00 I ever spent. These speakers have good bass for the size, and they are built heavy. I like the highs too. I bought these about 3 years ago at a yard sale. They sounded great when I got them home, and still do. I put them in my surround sound system for the front speakers. I'm pushing them through a Onkyo Power Amp (I have Three of These). Can't remember the model number, but it's 150 watts per channel. I have a Infinity Center channel. My rear channels are a pair of JBL Pro slighly smaller speakers. They're stuidio monitors. I have two Klipsch powered subs. They are 12" 150 watt powered subs. Eric Clapton, (One More Car One More Rider DVD) Sounds Great on it. |

Strength:
Performance equal or surpass most floor standing speakers. Wide frequency response. Good bass for HT without a subwoofer. Great sound and imaging for music. Nice complete package.
Weakness:
Woofer cone separated from surround. Apparently, same problem for some BP10 and 20s since they use the same Vifa woofers. I never thought that I would buy something that have been discontinued for over 10 years. I owned a full set of Def tech in my living room. They are awsome for HT but lack details and precise imaging required for music listening.

Strength:
Handsome cabinets with elegant details. Wife approves of their looks and that's always good. They have a certain mistique about them which could help at resale time if that ever comes.
Weakness:
I would suggest the wary owner locate and purchase the woofers as they will get harder to find in the future but one never knows just how long the originals will work so this may be my fear alone. I am a fan of Def Tech's products so when I ran across these DR-7's at the pawn shop for $200.00 I had to have them. I have them in my master bedroom which is large and long with thick carpeting. The sound is absorbed by my room almost too much but I still can enjoy what I hear. I use Sony ES to drive them and Jamo Art's for the surround channel while an Omage center and Signet sub round out the system. The looks are stunning next to the fireplace and the sound is right on. I did have a problem with the woofers in each cabinet. They seemed to delaminate or come unglued at the rubber surround to cone junction. I simply reglued them and they work as new. The Danish woofers are still available for around $30.00 each so I could have replaced them but so far my repair is good to go. Similar Products Used: Many many great JBL products, Infiniti Kappa, DCM, KEF, Wharfdale, B&W, Utah, Oaktron, Magnepan, Polk, and the list goes on. |

Strength:
Total sound, great for music and videos. After years of owning these bookshelf speakers, I have yet to hear another(in this size)that offer great sound from highs to lows. Paired with MK subwoofer, they look like a set. What makes Definitives great are the total sound they provide, highs and mid-range are clear(but not brite) and the lows makes it easy to combine with a subwoofer for a SEAMLESS sound. |

Strength:
Imaging - I have not heard better at anywhere near the price I paid. Build quality- they look and sound as good as the day I took them home.
Weakness:
None that I can detect except they are no longer built.. I have had my DR7 Bookshelves for 9 years and they still amaze me. I have replaced all my other componnents, but short of a house fire I will never part with my speakers. I can't wait to hear how they sound once I get some DVD-Audio discs. Similar Products Used: I am also using a C1 center, and BP1 surrounds and a PF15 sub. |

Strength:
Accurate,huge bass,soundstage
Weakness:
none at this price. These bookshelves are the best speakers I have heard to date and I've heard many different higher end brands and models. This includes some floorstanders too. Accurate, excellent soundstage, huge tight bass, excellent highs and work well with all types of music. I have never owned any speakers where I did not NEED a sub except for these. As the reviews below have stated, it would be hard to be hard to beat these for under $1500 in my opinon. I know what some of you are thinking.......Def Tech and music are like oil and water. These speakers will smash that notion to bits. If you ever get the chance to listen to these babies Similar Products Used: B&W 604 s2,monitor audio silver 5i's,JMlabs,NHT supertwo's ect. |
