I just purchased a pair of the pro 400's from my local definitive dealer. All I can say is "wow". I also purchased a C/L/R 1000 and a yamaha rx-v795.The bass coming from the pair of 6.5's is unbelievable. they work well with or without the LFE input. by far they are the best speaker for the price. they are excellent for all types of music as well as dvd's.

Just got them for a month now. Awesome. I returned BA VR 960 for them. They are good for music and movies. You won't need a dedicated sub woofer. It's built in 125w amp per speaker gives me more than enough bass for my taste. It's rated bandwith of 19-30khz is hard to verify by human hearing (if not impossible)but you can really feel the lows on movies specially those on DVD. The mids and the highs are real crisp and clear. At it's price, these speakers will be very hard to beat. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Amazing clarity at all volume levels. Tremendous bass from 6.5 in drivers

Weakness:

Cheap speaker grills.

After reading some of the reviews, I was skeptical about these speakers. Just how much bass can 6.5 in drivers deliver? Opinions are always relative to the standards of the listener, so I decided to give them a try for myself. After doing so, I also brought a pair home. These speakers are fantastic! The midrange, highs, and bass are all exceptional (however the speaker grills are not) specifically when price is a consideration. During my listening experiences while shopping, I heard better speakers, but not within range of my wallet.

They are driven by a HK AVR85 with a Def. Tech C-2 center which is matched perfectly to the front speakers. Even at high volumes everything remains intact and clear. All but the lowest bass is reproduced well and the built in subs are great for most music and home theatre, but if you really want to shake the house, you might have to add an additional sub.

Very Good Value. Very happy listener.

Strength:

Terrific tight bass, solid sound overall.

Weakness:

Grills, bass "chuffing" on very low frequencies

I am very pleased with the sound of the Pro Tower 400's, just not mine! For the second time in 4 months, I am going to have to return these speakers. I am hearing a tweeter "buzz" or "rattle" that sounds just like distortion. The sound is easily heard when an electric guitar is playing a solo (Trk.#14 on Super Speedway DVD). I have played these speakers through the dealer's amps and CD players and produced the same sound. Replacing the tweeters helped, but I still heard the noise in one speaker. So the dealer swapped them for a new set and I still hear the noise (to a much lesser degree) out of ONE speaker this time. Definitive seems puzzled by this and I am still working with them and with my dealer to resolve the issue. If anyone has heard a similar sound or has been through this, PLEASE email me at Stuart.H.Smith@mindspring.com

Other than the tweeter issue, I have been very pleased with the performance of these speakers. These are great "power towers."

Strength:

Highs and mids are crystal clear. Cabinets are styled well and appear strong.

Weakness:

Play Kid Rock on the Subs and you wreck-um. Will not fill a large room with bass. Grills are a nightmare.

These are great speakers if you live in an apartment or have a small listening space to fill. If you live in a house with high ceilings or a large room they are still great, but you will need an additional powered subwoofer.

I had these speakers for over a year in an apartment with no problems but ruined a sub about a month after moving into a house (after several hours much louder than I played then in the apartment). My listening room has a high ceiling and I have to run the subs too hard to fill the space (this was only around 40-50% on the knob though). The failure was that one of the subs began to rattle, or sounded like it was clipping. This got worse and worse until I had it replaced. Def. Tech's warranty service is top notch though. They really stood by the product and were willing to send a new speaker to my door and allow me to return my old one in the new box they sent. No complaints at all on their service, in fact it was above and beyond.

The problem was easily solved by the addition of a 12" powered sub to my system. I still love these speakers, now I just have the subs turned down to around 25%.

This shouldn't be taken as a knock on the speakers, just info to let you know their limits

Strength:

SIZE,LOOKS,BASS RESPONSE,MID RANGE

Weakness:

CRAPPY GRILLS, SOMETIMES BASS HEAVY

AFTER A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH DEF TECH BP10'S (THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN) I WAS AT A LOSS AS TO WHAT SPEAKERS TO TRY NEXT.MY ROOM IS VERY LIMITED BY WINDOWS SO THAT SPEAKER PLACEMENT IS RESTRICTED TO JUST ONE POSITION, WITH THE BP10"S THAT I HAD LUSTED AFTER FOR 4 YEARS ,I FINALLY GET THEM AND THEY SOUND LIKE CRAP, PURELY BECAUSE OF THEIR LOCATION, MUDDLED IMAGING AND CONFUSING STANDING WAVES HURT MY EARS!!. I HAD DISMISSED THE 400'S AS A POOR MANS ANSWER TO ALL IN ONE SPEAKERS (YES I'M A SNOB!!)BUT WANTING TO STICK WITH DEF TECH AS I HAVE BEEN MORE THAN HAPPY WITH MY OLD SET UP FOR YEARS ( I AM MEASURING THIS IN TERMS OF ENJOYMENT AND PEASURE )MY LOCAL DEALER WAS KIND ENOUGH TO LOAN ME A PAIR OF 400'S . I TOOK THEM, CONVINCED I WAS GOING TO BE DISAPPOINTED BUT WITHIN 2 DAYS I HAD CALLED TO ORDER A SET, AND WILL PROBABLY GET ANOTHER SET FOR MY REAR SURROUNDS!THE SOUND WAS MUSICALLY IMPRESSIVE ADDING DETAIL AND IMAGING WHERE PREVIOUS SPEAKERS HAD FAILED, THEY ARE SENSITIVE TO SET UP ESPECIALLY IN SURROUND MODE SO PATIENCE WINS! HTE PRESS REVIEWS I READ I WOULD SAY WERE ACCURATE BUT THE WIDE RANGE OF REVIEWS THAT I HAVE READ HERE SEEM TO INDICATE ENVIRONMENT OR COMPREHENSION OF SPEAKER CAPABILITIES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ( THE BEST IMPROVEMENT WAS SPIKING THEM AND LEANING THEM 5 DEGREES BACK )

Strength:

Great sound stage, mids and highs clear, bass is impressive from such a small driver, handsome design

Weakness:

No audible weakness, grill design poor

I have listened to this speaker for approximately 2 weeks and am blown away by its performance. I was looking for a speaker that would not be overwhelming in my decor while providing superior performance for music and home theater. I listened to similar products from Polk, Klipsch and Boston Accoustics but felt the DT 400's were sonically superior, expecially at higher volumes. These speakers are particular well balanced and provide excellant detailed bass. I have read other reviews that have pointed out various weaknesses in their performance, I have found none. I have a Denon AVR-2800 which is an excellent match for these speakers. These are simply the best speakers for music and HT at their price point. And no doubt, you can shake the house without a subwoofer. I have the DT C2 Center and 100's for surrounds of which I am equally satisfied.

Strength:

Great sound stage, great highs. Solid bass out of 6 1/2" drivers

Weakness:

Speaker grill has flimsy plastic pegs that break off real easily

I was looking at getting the Definitive Technology Pro Monitor 100's with their powered sub. However, I was able to convince my wife to get a pair of towers. Our previous speaker set was a set of Bose AM5's. (Which I got real cheap, luckly because they are cheap.) WHen I hooked the Pro Tower 400's up and did an A - B comparision between the Bose, my ears loved the 400's. My wife loved them and doesn't mind what they do to the "decor" in the room. I paid full list, $1100 for the pair, I only wish I could have found a discount on them. I searched for a couple of weeks on the internet, and the back of magazines but no luck. Still a great speaker at a great price.

Strength:

Sexy shape, amazing bass output for physical size, and highs and mids that will surely plaster a smile on one's face.

Weakness:

Flimsy Grills and occasional Port "chuffing" that is only prevelant at high volumes (low bass notes)

When I first walked into the audio store from where I purchased the Pro 400's, I was amazed at all of the different levels of audio equipment. I wasn't looking to spend a ton of money, but I did want to get something that incorporated a powered sub into a tower. The first speakers that I auditioned were the Paradigm 90P's. These speakers were silky but seemed to lack bottom end when I was listening to my Techno Mix CD. The subs on this model seemed to become easily overwhelmed by the extra-low bass frequencies. Well, I was then pointed to the Pro 400's. We put the same CD into the same CD player and fired it up. Instantly, I was awe struck. The Pro 400's EASILY out performed the 90P's. The bass was hitting VERY hard (I asked numerous times if there was an external sub hooked up...but there wasn't) and the highs were clear as day! I love these speakers and I look forward to hooking up a ProSub200 to eliminated the port chuffing and to give my system the ability to crack cement! Thanks for your time.
