Strength:

Excellent dynamics, detailed and surprisingly full sound from such a small and inexpensive speaker

Weakness:

Vinyl covering on speaker cabinet vice solid or veneered cabinet

This is a very impressive speaker for it's size and cost. I've auditioned various high-end monitors and IMHO this is one of the best available in overall sound quality (in the $500 to $2500/pr. price range). The dynamics are excellent, the soundstage/imaging is well focused, the detail is wonderfully intriguing and the bass is surprisingly full (above approx 50 HZ) for such a small and inexpensive monitor ($900/pr).

I just bought a Tagmclaren irv-60 and was looking for a pair of really decent speakers, I even had really a bad image of Dynaudio for bad working experience in a studio some years ago. But I tryed B&W, Totem, Daly, JPW and when I thought I had to look some place else, the audience 50 show up and I was amazed, with the bass the midle and Highs, I find it really amazing by this price. and I not even liked dynaudio...
10 stars monimum.

Strength:

this speaker does everything well but the mid-range and detail are what really stand out

Weakness:

all my old cds from the 80's suddenly s_ck. But the 70's stuff actually sound good. Next upgrade to beat this speaker is gonna cost.

After listening to the Mission speakers ( fantastic soundstage although it sounded a little cavernous with a bit of an echo, good mid and high, NO BASS!!! ) and the B&W speakers ( 600's sounded a little unremarkable except on vocals and soft music,),
I figured I was gonna go for the Energy C2 speakers which I had a good blend of vocals and imaging when I happened to walk into a Dynaudio dealer shop.

My taste in music runs from pop to musicals, so my test CD was the 1996 edition of Jesus Christ Superstar w Steve Balsamo and Joanna Ampil. It's got everything, a rock beat, guitar riffs, orchestral crashes, slow vocals, belted vocals...so I was DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY that the Audience 50 took it all in and revealed everything I had never heard in this recording before.

First off the vocals, Oh My God! I can't begin to describe them, I was totally floored. You know that dawning revelation when you realize that what your hearing is better than anything you've ever heard before? ( except for maybe the time in canada when I passed in front of a pair of Martin Logan Electrostatic speakers ) I got that! I felt like the singer was in the room with me.

Then the imaging of the instruments, I felt like Saul on the road to Damascus!!! Only I could hear clearly for the first time!
I could hear the guitar distinctly from the drums which sounded like they came from a different set, ditto the chorus, the piano and the bass. It's like they had five mono channels going at different areas from different speakers with each speaker dedicated to a particular instrument in front of me.

The highs weren't shrill but were very commanding, the depth was there on the chorus and subtle on the instruments, the main vocals rightly stood out. The bass on the lows really stood out more so than on your average bass thump.

I could probably rifle thru the audioreview glossary to try and pick out the proper terms for what I'm hearing but the plain fact is these speakers simply sound amazing. The sound is rich but not gross, the bass is deep, real deep, but not obtrusive. Clarity is king with these speakers. I always thought the Dynaudio were slightly off their rocker with their "Danes Don't Lie" tagline. Now I get it! Try em out, bring a few cd's, close your eyes and listen to what you've been missing.

THE DOWNSIDE
Some CD's sound bad because of either sloppy engineering or exaggerated bass and treble levels which the 50 reveals. Especially the Pop ones. Some other speakers can probably mask this but the 50 can be brutal with them.

The next step up from the 50's will probably cost a lot of money. I can't imagine any other speaker in it's price range would give me so dramatic an improvement to warrant a change. That means I'll have to look at the Contour line or another higher end tier from another company like the Veritas or Nautilus series. I think the Audience series would already give the CDMNT series some major competition, even though the CDMNT is supposed to be a higher tier.

BTW for those interested in the Audience 40, you should check these out too since when I first heard the 40, I actually preferred them to the 50's ( better imaging on vocals ) but in the end i went for the 50 because of the meatier bass. Plus the 40's were broken in and the 50's I heard were not. And I felt given time the 50's would be a better choice, still every once in a while I think of those 40's : )

This speaker really is something special. Very clean, transparent sound. Detail is outstanding, not in a way that reaches out and grabs you but draws you into the music. Very smooth, pleasant mid-range, extended but never harsh highs. Bass is well-damped without the mid-bass hump common in small speakers.
These are excellent drivers, but the cabinetry is very plain. (Without the grilles, the black aluminum baffle and oversized woofer dust cap give it a kind of Darth Vader look.) The emphasis is definitely on sound quality rather than appearance. Auditioned versus B&W CDM-1SE (uneven mid-range, too forward), and Paradigm Studio 20 (well-constructed, decent detail, but too bright and harsh). Dynaudio is a clear winner.

I bought Dynaudio 10 from James and found that the dynaudio is reallya great speaker. I first heard Dynaudio when I heard my friend's car
sound system which had a 3 way passive crossover, all dynaudio system, i
was floored by the excellent reproduction of vocal, awesome imaging,
and neutrality. The home version of dynaudio have the same quality that
the car system has, it's just....for lack of better word, perfect (for the price range). I auditioned all speakers below $1000 price range (including B&W 602, paradigm 20, Monitor 7, Tannoy 600, Mission 751,752, Phase tech Teatro 7, Deftech, Mirage, Infinity Overture 1, NHT SuperTwo, 1.5, Klipsch blah blah blah) and i can say with confident that IMHO the dynaudio is the best. Do yourself a favor, listen to them.

Strength:

dynamics, transparency, taut bass, excellent midrange

Weakness:

Force me to upgrade my other stuffs

Purchased this babies 2 months ago, wow, the dynamics and transparency of these speakers is really breath-taking. With these in place, I an start to hear the sonic imperfection of my AMP and CD player. For those guys who think that this speakers sucks, I guess that you better go look at your other components first.

First of all, these Dyns love power, the more you give, they more they want to take. Use of cabling is extremely important, as these speakers will reveal whatever things that are feed to them, so you need to use good cables to carry the correct signal.

This speakers produce one of the most beautiful midrange I have ever heard, sometimes, I can really imagine the singer right in front of me!!!! Bass is really good, so good that it can easily take on the floorstanding rivals from Mission.

After using these, I already fixated this thought in my mind -- if I was to ever upgrade from these babies, I will upgrade to its higher range. But I am sure, these will really satisfy me for quite some time before I move on!!!

If you haven't listen to one of these before, go do it!!!!

For the sake of avoiding any unecessary redundancy, I think that many of the positive comments made in the other reviews are accurate. I would add that this is perhaps the one of the single best values under $1500.00 that I have come across. I auditioned against many similiarly priced and more expensive models from Hales, B&W, JA, Vanderstein and others. Four Stars for overall quality and sound. Five stars for value.

Strength:

well-balanced mid-high frequency & energetic low-level

Weakness:

rough and lineal tweeter & diffused woofer sound

Well, First impression of audience 50 was that they're visually great, and they smelled good (like a fine wood) -_-;
After I set them on my speaker stands, connected to a power amp.I put 5kg cement blocks on the top of the speakers for tight bass.
I played the delicacy cd(a burn-in cd) for 3 hours and then I started to listen. "oh..this is amazing" I said.

"How small they are.. but what a stong bass they have"

I only changed my speakers from wharfedale 7.1 to audience 50. but I felt like that my all systems are totally upgraded.
Frankly speaking, I've bought these at internet shopping mall without any infomation. but before long I realized that I made a good choice.
I'm so comfotable because for some time I don't need to buy or hear another speakers.
I'm really satisfied with the sound of dynaudio.

Finally here introduce my reference systems

* Inkel/SAE A502 Power amp (400W x 2CH @4ohm)

Good speakers by any standard. Sound cleans & details, capable of playing any music. I've auditioned the B&W CDM 1SE, the Dynaudio just superior in every way. In Singapore, these speakers are selling at half the B&W price. Great value for money. 5 star.
