Unfortunately, a college student who works weekends to go to school can rarely affort the $600.00 asking price (Around $1958.00 in todays dollars) and so made due with other more affordable equipment. I finally found a used 2270 I could afford in 1992. Tallahassee Mobile Mechanic

This review the Andra 2

Bought used pair and cant be more happier

Listen to classic, jazz and rock music. They handle all very good !

Excellent high mid and low , full range indeed and high class sound all over

Excellent sound stage, dynamics and translation. What else can you ask ?

Compare it to the Salon, W/P, B&W 800 and other from those caliber, i found them more musical to my ears

Highly recommended if you lucky enough to find them in the used market

I push them with: HD files through highface (improtant: use asio4all driver ; huge difference ) connected to Bryston's stuff : BDA1 dac , BP20 pre and 7B monos

I bought this pair of Andra I from a good audiophile friend as an accommodation and curiosity after reading the reviews of how decent these speakes were. Although I had some initial strange feelings about the bass response at his place I thought it had to do with space and placement.
After taking them home and setting them up in my own room they were still lacking bass response but I left it at that since the nature of my work is travelling out of the country often and really didn't have a lot of time to enjoy the music.
Little did I know when I decided to sell them to another audiophile friend that happened to own a pair that we put his and mine next to each other and compared them. My pair definitely was lacking in the bass response compared to his pair which was exactly the same model.
Subsequently I decided to contact Eggleston and inquired and was informed that the bass response could be improved by upgrading the crossovers to the Andra III which were quite expensive for what they are worth which I came to realize after receiving and paying for them.
Being an electronics engineer myself I would expect the task of changing the crossovers to be quite simple which in fact it is. BUT to my shock and surprise after removing the woofer and getting to the crossover connections it absolutely made no sense- in fact a factory miswiring of the the crossover which was connected in parallel to ALL the drivers. Mind you- everything was original and these speakers had never been tampered with or any of the drivers removed. Subsequently, I contacted Eggleston again and even mailed them the pictures and provided a drawing of the schematic of the crossover and the connections. I phoned and questioned one of their staff about the possible miswiring during production to perhaps a certain lot - he didn't deny or admit to anything and basically- NO COMMENT!
As a matter of fact, the original Andra I crossovers look better in quality and of higher specs than the Andra III crossovers which I paid an exorbitant price.
To those owners with the proper crossover connections these are decent speakers I must say and to those unfortunate owners like myself who mistook the "lacking of bass" problem to a defective component- have the connections checked and fixed without having to replace the crossovers and contribute to Eggleston's bank account. The simple fix is one end of the resistor should ONLY be connected to the woofer and not to all the drivers.
I gave my review of this company based on the lack of honesty, disclosure, responsibility and goodwill of any sort when a problem was of their own error and mostly likely poor quality control.

THIS REVIEW IS ABOUT THE ANDRA III

I have owned quite a lot of high-end speakers and heard most of them. I have spent the last year listening to as many systems as I could. Some of them were excellent. But each time, there was a "little something" that was not perfect. Not long ago, the miracle happened! Listening to the Egglestoneworks Andra III was a fascinating experience. A few minutes were enough to understand that something very special was happening. I could use many words but, as English is not my mother language, let me make is short: it was just indiscernible from the live experience! I have bought the speakers that are now at home, getting even better each day.

The Bass extensions is just incredible (-3db@18Hz !!!), the power, physical impact, speed and deepness in the extreme low frequencies is just beyond words !
The medium is extremely refined. It is truly the first time in my audiophile life I hear such a lively and natural violin sound. Human voices are also just like "real ones".
Finally the high-frequencies are just fantastic. Without this "sharp edge" I have experienced with my previous speakers using a diamond dome. Very detailed but never aggressive.

The coherence of the registers is so convincing that one immediately forgets about the speakers and gets involved in the music itself.

Is it the best speaker I have heard to date (including some costing $ 100000)? YES !
Is it really truly perfect? Probably not! The efficiency, for example, is good but not huge (I would not use a SET amp).

Both as a researcher in physics (this is my job) and as a music lover (this is my main hobby), I give those speakers my highest recommendation. Andra I and Andra II were "full range stereophile class A", I have no doubt the Andra III will also be (will they create the A+ range for them :-) ?) !

Strength:

Just plain musical, small size makes it easy to place, gorgeous!

Weakness:

Price

To be quite blunt, I feel that the Andra's are one of the best available. I also feel that they might even reach that elusive "classic" status. I have heard and spent some time auditioning many of the Andra's competitors, Wilson Watt/Puppy, Revel Salon, Thiel CS6 & 7.2, Dunlavy SC IVa, etc. . . None of these seem to offer a view into the musical event with quite the same realism and musicality that the Andra's offer. The Andra's pull this all off with such ease that it seems like they are just yawning through the works that they are reproducing. I don't mean that they are boring by any stretch, just that they are never tasked by any musical event they are asked to reproduce.

There are some other fine loudspeakers out there in the Andra's price range that offer performance in one area or another, but none seem to offer the musical "wholeness" of the Andra's. The Watt/Puppies have a somewhat wider soundstage, but the individual instruments aren't any easier to pick out of the orchestra. The Wilson's also have a more metallic treble in my opinion, and the bass isn't as tight or extended. The bass on the Andra's is as good as I've heard, very extended and very tuneful. You can here two double basses next to each other and pick them both out. The Andra's can also handle any range of dynamic peaks you can throw at them as long as you provide them with adequate power and current, at least 200 high current watts per channel. They do however have a pretty stable impedance so you might be able to use high power tube amplifiers . . . I haven't tried it.

The Andra's are also easy to place due to their size. I don't know of a full range speaker that is as compact as the Andra and these things are full range. The other "feature" that makes them easy to place is that they like to be placed closer to the rear wall than most high quality loudspeakers do. This helps out in shorter rooms, they do however need to be placed farther apart with a moderate toe in to achieve the widest most natural soundstage.

As far a ancillary equipment I would suggest Transparent cable. The Andra's are wired internally with Transparent so that makes sense. I also love Mark Levinson amplification, it's match made in heaven although I'm sure there are many amps out there that would work well. I do think that 200 wpc is a good starting point though unless you listen to small scale music exclusively, in which case you probably wouldn't own Andra's. They seem to like a little volume behind them to really open up.

My only complaint is price, what the hell isn't it always that way with really great equipment? I think they are worth every penny, especially if you buy a used or demo pair. The new Wilson's are almost $20 grand and they just plain don't sound as good to me. The only thing I might trade the Andra's for is the Avalon Eidilons. I would have to audition them further to make that call. I will give the Andra's a value rating of only 4 stars though, $15K is just plain big bucks. On sound they get the highest marks I can give, and that's what counts. Oh yeah . . . did I mention that they are gorgeous!

NO BASS!!!

Could not wait to get rid of them. Bought them as Demo's out of a large stereo store in Calf. for $7500.he told me they were 6 months old but I don't think they were working right from the dat I got them. They were supposed to be the newer model with 2 12 in. woofers but I don't think they were. Had 4 weeks and 2 of the mid range blew out at moderate listening levels. (did not clip amp as I played my Thiel Cs 7s at much louder volume)Mid range speakers are really little woofers and they seem to do all the work. Had to buy Genesis 900 sub to get any bass at all. I knew I was in trouble the day I got them as a buddy and I a/b them with me Thiels and the Thiels smoked them. I was lucky to sell them for $6500 as they went out of business. I bought the little Thiel MCS 1's and I am running them w/ the Genesis 900 and they sound better than the Andra.I would not even give them a "1" rating but thats as low as it goes!

Strength:

The speakers provide deep, detailed sound. Well balanced, and amazing at higher levels. Filled a 20'x32' room with no problems. Amazing highs with just the right amount of bass. Their size is also compact, making it easy to fit in virtually any room.

Weakness:

Only two, 15,000 a pair and over 200 lbs. each!

The speakers are at that pure class A level. There quite simply is none better. There may be something different, but not better, so careful auditioning is a must. The highs and mid-range simply need to be heard to be believed. Great bass. To some, their compact size relative to the other speakers in their class makes them attractive to those with limited room.

Weakness:

Few, but spatial definition and localization (soundstage) is not as spectacular as the best Dipoles; e.g., Magneplanar 20s

A superb speaker with excellent midrange, good bass, acurate timbral reproduction and wide dymanics. Suitable for modern recordings with wide dynamic range. Requires 300 watts per channel or greater for best results.
