Strength:

Piano, Organ and material with strong Dynamic Presence

Weakness:

Few, but spatial definition and localization (soundstage) is not as spectacular as the best Dipoles; e.g., Magneplanar 20s

A superb speaker with excellent midrange, good bass, acurate timbral reproduction and wide dymanics. Suitable for modern recordings with wide dynamic range. Requires 300 watts per channel or greater for best results.

Similar Products Used:

Magneplanar MG 20; Quad ESL63

This is a super mid size speaker with huge sound stage. Very powerful, lighting fast, solid bass, natural midrange (no cross work on midrange. the best midrange you can get!), transparent highs!
This speaker enjoy a lot power from the power amp, can be used with solid state or tubes gear.
It is not cheap, but compare with all other class "A" speaker, this is a steal. Much better than watt/puppy. It a better speaker than speakers twice or more of the price. Top quality! Highly recommanded!

I can't believe someone claim there is no bass! These speaker has a lot top quality bass, tight, deep and low!
The speaker's midrange is the best I have never heard, because there is no crossover in the path, your amp have direct control of the midrange drivers. I believe this is reason why the midrange sound much better than other similar or even much more expensive speakers. The highs are to die for, crystal clear. Plenty of air around the instrument. great sound stage and presentation!
These speaker is the fastest I have ever heard! But please supply a lot of top quality power, the damping factor also need to be high to make these speaker sound their best!
This is a top choice speaker disregard of price on the market today!

I just heard these at Sound by Singer and was blown away!! From top to bottom, they are the best speakers I have ever heard. Incredibly smooth highs at high levels, very DEEP and tight bass, the midrange is very good (though it sounds a little veiled compared to electrostats, particularly the Quad ESl-63 US Monitor), soundstaging and images were prodigious. A truly excellent speaker. These redefine the speaker to die for!!!!

Overpriced for what I heard, can get the same performance for much less, IMHO, Avalon Avatar seems to get really close to what I heard from Andra and THAT less than half the price. May be just mebbe that's what you pay to buy Stereophile recommended component, me think.

Stereophile creates these "personality cults" with their reviews. The Andra is a good example. Compared to a truly musical speaker like the ESP Concert Grands it sounds like hi-fi. But people will buy it, because Stereophile says its the best. Sad. They should describe equipment, not rate it.

I owned the Andras for about six months and thought they were great. The amplification was the CD Premier 8-XS, which was the wrong fit for the speaker. These things need power. Very good sound, good bass, great midrange. Upgraded from them to Cello Masters which are in a wholly different class than the Andras, but the latter are quite good for all sorts of music. Better than the Wilson WATT/Puppies

I heard these speakers at" Sound by Singer " in NY, they were hooked upto a Krell Kav-500 and Krell a250. They sound GREAT ! Smoothest Highs Ive
ever heard yet. I almost purchased the KRELL thinking they were the reason
for this sound I hear, but I was wrong. I got an Aragon 8008bb (200 watt) amplifier instead knowing that they would sound just as goon as any KRELL
with these speakers . Clean bass, great mids , dynamic, airy, smooth highs
. What else can I say, the only thing that got me bad on these speakers was
the price$$$. I honestly dont think they are worth so much $$ even though
they sound very good but for that kind of MONEY I better get Heaven on Earth and I dont think any speaker or Amp. should cost so much, I think its a waste
of Money because I hear speakers costing 10x less that sound almost as good if not the same.I give it a 5 star for sound but 1 star for value.

After more then one year of listening to and comparing of everything that has possibly been made on this planet I decided to buy a pair of EgglestonWorks Andra's. My system consists of VTL MB-750 monoblock's, a Wadia 860 CD-player/Pre-amp and Transparent Audio inter connects/speaker cables. I have heard the Andra's with several top of the line power-amps like Krell FPB-300/600, FPB-250/350 monoblocks, Levinson 331/333/336, Rowland model 8ti and all sounded great in some way but I felt most involved with the music hearing them driven by the VTL tube amp's (350w triode mode/750w tetrode mode). I agree with another reviewer that they need a lot of power and they are very unforgiving. After listening to a lot of high-end speakers I think the Andra's are one of the few speakers that let you enjoy music as close as possible to a live performance. I can only agree with some of the other reviewers 'Truly a speaker to die for' and 'It does not get better than this'.

After reading all the wonderful reviews on the Andras, I arranged for a listening as I am in the market for a pair of speakers. I was so excited. In the beginning, the store guys used a Mark Levinson 335 to drive them, a Audio Research preamp. The Andra didn't want to move at all. Something sounded really wrong. They obviously require a LOT more power to make the drivers move. So we changed the setup, and used a Krell pre/amp 300 combo. Something still wasn't right. Midbass is supposed to be the Andra's forte, but it sounded 'thin'... bass was... VERY tight (over damped), and not quite as deep as I hoped. Highs were good, but not quite transparent.
I spent a goo few hours with them but just couldn't make them sound right. Maybe the sound is not what I am looking for.

I just put down an order for the Sonus Faber Amati. To me, the Amati was much easier to listen to. Much more natural. And MUCH easier to drive.

If you are in the market for speakers in this price range, try out the Revel (very hifi sound) and Sonus Faber (like musical instruments)
