Always loved the sound of JBL Whoever says JBL doesn’t make good speakers make good sounding speakers anymore hasn’t listened to the Studio Series. I’ve owned the 312s for over a year, still very impressed with these speakers. They remind me of the L-100s, great highs, slightly forward midrange, good bass, and fantastic soundstage.
I’ve heard things in recordings that I’ve never heard before. Been listening to the remastered Beach Boys “Pet sounds’ absolutely beautiful detailed sound.
I’ve been listening to audio speakers since the mid 1970’s and I can’t think of any speaker that sounds better than these. You won’t go wrong with these speakers

Ok, I am thinking I could get some feedback from others who have "won" these from ubid: has anyone gotten theirs yet? I won an auction on 10/31, and as of now they still say "In Warehouse." I called and they told me to wait another 10 business days before calling again!! WTF!?!? I'm starting to get a bad feeling about buying them through ubid, no matter how low the price is.

Good quality, awesome sound, look sweet, price

Beech color

I have to say I see why these speakers are popular. I haven't tested them a lot. But they are night and day better than my old speakers. These speakers are easily worth twice what I paid for. I'll also be happy with these speakers for a long time. Ubid took a couple weeks to get out to me, but they were also in excellent condition.

I am surprised to fall in love with JBL speakers after quite a long search for a pair that works well for us. These speakers are the most enjoyable, down to earth pair we have had among
many. They do a great job with all kinds of music. They are great loud and at quiet listening levels. The bass is adequate. They are very revealing which is what prompted
us to trade our Wharfedale Emerald 97s. The JBL Studio S-312s just outclassed them in every way. The beechnut cabinets fit well with any decor. They are the best speaker
that we could find in our price range and that includes everything uBid is currently selling. These speakers will
bring a lot of joy to your household once you figure out
where you are going to put them. Make sure you find a pair
of quality interconnects and speaker wire though; it really
helps to showcase the S-312's talent.

Strength:

Accurate sound, doesn't over emphasize any particular as far as I can tell.

Weakness:

Grill frame could be a bit more rigid.

I picked the JBL S312's since I bought a 32" Panasonic Tau TV (the non HDTV one) and I wanted some decent speakers for watching DVD's and videogames. I read the reviews here first and decided to pick them up along with a yamaha RX-V596 receiver which I returned (didn't like the almost shrill "bright" toned sound which the RX-V596 produced)I upgraded to a RX-V800 which corrected that problem. After connecting it to my older denon CD changer with the coax digital connector and the sound is pretty amazing. Now I can hear little things in songs like a saxaphonist breath in for air between notes, which I think was pretty awesome.
The previous posters who complain that the bass is lacking don't seem to understand that it's easy to add a subwoofer to handle the lower frequencies. It's alot harder to get speakers to not overdo bass if it was designed to exaggerate it. I find the S312'a handle bass perfectly, it's not too boomy or distorted. Anyways, to sum it up, great speakers.

Strength:

Incredible base, good looking, clear cut sound

Weakness:

Bit on the heavy side, but how often do you plan to move them?

These speakers simply put are awesome. I am using them as the fronts, with the JBL S38's in the rear, the JBL S-Center and the PB12 as the sub. Combine this with the fact I have gotten my hand on one of Sony's newest receiver's in the 975 model, this system is rocking the house. Got a decent deal on them to top it off. Let that be a note to all you Sony electronic enthusiast's all their new products for the 2001 year are about to be in stores shortly...

Strength:

Sound mainly. Not too shabby-looking, either.

Weakness:

Grilles are flimsy, and the feet *look* like they could pop off, but I haven't had any problems.

About a year ago I had to replace my broken receiver, and bought the respectable Yamaha RX-V2095. I then decided that a speaker upgrade was in order to fully appreciate the improvements my receiver offered. I had my Polk satellite system for about 7 years - and loved it - but I did some research and decided I wanted the Paradigm Studio 80s, which are great speakers, especially for the $1400 they cost.

I went to the store two or three times a week bugging the Paradigm guy to demo them with movies and music they had on hand there. In the mean time, my buddy (not to be outdone) replaced his really nice Infinity bookshelf speakers with the JBL S312s. They only cost him $900, so I had this one in the bag (or so I thought). As my buddy was demoing his speakers for me, I was actually surprised that they did sound better than his Infinities, which I thought were great. We watched a couple of DVDs and then listened to music for a couple of hours. When the Beatles came on is when I truly realized how great these speakers were. I was hearing sounds and effects I'd never heard on my Polks or his old speakers. Then I was noticing on everything he played how articulate the bass sounded - the tone from each bassist's guitar was unique and more defined than I'd ever heard at his house or mine - almost like tasting different flavors. Also, the drums now had more punch to them, and sounded much clearer and more realistic. The soundstage was very impressive, and especially at this price point. Mind you, these speakers were being pushed by an inexpensive 100w Kenwood unit.

Next time I saw the Paradigm guy, I decided to bring in a CD from my car. I had remembered how good Ozzy's unremastered version of "Blizzard of Ozz" had sounded at my friend's, so I wanted to see how much better it would sound on the Studio 80s. This was a very pivotal point in my decision making process. The CD sounded terrible through the Paradigms, as they're a very transparent speaker. Transparency is a very noble feature in a speaker, but with nearly 900 CDs, I'm sure I have more than a few that were mastered substandardly, and the S312s make EVERYTHING sound good without being what I call 'colorful'. Needless to say, that was my last visit to the Paradigm shop.

After nearly a year with my S312s, I still love them more than anyone should love inanimate objects. They can take anything I can throw at them, and make it sound GREAT! At $900, you're getting some great bang for your buck, and if you get them cheaper, you're practically stealing them!

Strength:

Clear mids and highs, good tight bass. Does both music and HT equally well.

Weakness:

None found yet.

Wow! I have recently upgraded my entire HT system, and the JBL S-312 speakers are a great addition to my system.

PRICE:
For my price range, I was looking at several different brands. I had the oppertunity to hear most of the speakers at best buy several times before deciding. In the price range the JBL S-312 speakers won hands down. I paid $620 including shipping from aoknetinc.com.

VISUAL:
I got them in beechwood, the color matches our entertainment center perfectly. I must say that my wife has been te bigest hurdle during the HT system upgerade. She does not see why we "need" the new equipment. However, when she saw how pretty the speakers were visually, she just smiled and gave me a wink.

I had to return my first receiver as it was damaged in transit. Therefore, the speakers arrived at my house days before the receiver was back. Talk about anticipation! I had them all setup, but could not listen to them! ACK! The neat thing is that I got to really appreciate the look and feel of the speakers without hearing them.

AUDIO:
After hooking up my digital connection from the receiver to the CD player, and the new 12 guage runs for speaker wire, I put in my favorite CDs. I was amazed and very pleased. I sat there for three hours putting in CD after CD. Everything I threw at the 312's came out clean and clear.

I pushed them very hard for several hours. The volume and bass were extreeme;I am sure the nieghbors could hear me. The highs and mids were extreemely clear. The bass was tight and pronounced.

However, the bass did seem lacking just a bit. I say this only becuse I have a powered sub that I was able to turn on and off to hear the difference. This is not a fair comparison in my eyes, as I believe ANY speakers sound better with a subwoofer. So the "lack" of bass issue will not count against the speakers in my opinion as they have ample bass for their preformance.

VALUE:
Best of class in my opinion. Nothing I could find came close to sound in this price range. I may have missed something, but from my experience, this was the deal and still is.

CONCLUSION:
It has been almost two weeks since I was able to hear them in my home, and I still can't wait to go home and hear them. TV, DVD, CD, Tuner. All of it sounds like I want now. Someday I may have $10,000 for a pair of speakers. Until then I will be happy to run home and listen to my JBL S-312's.

Good hunting!
Scott
