Strength:

Clear highs and mid range very good bass, cabinets are nicely finished

Weakness:

None found

I was in the Bose outlet store and was quoted a price of $1400. for the Bose 901 plus stands. I almost make the mistake of buying the 901's except for the arrogant attitude of the saleman. I returned home and started reading the reviews and was very impressed with the JBL S312. I had the opportunity to listen to several different speakers including the JBL S312 and I was very impressed with the S312. I ordered a pair for less than $650.00 and when the arrived I was totally blown away with the sound. My home has 2000 sq ft and when I crank them up a bit, it fills the whole house, but they have a quality sound when kept to low levels. I had planned on adding a subwolfer, but I discovered that it is not need.

Strength:

Mids and Highs! Extremely clear!

Weakness:

Size for some.

Well what can I say. I purchased the S312's to use as my mains for my Denon AVR-2800 with the S-Center, the S-38's for my surrounds and a Cerwin Vega 12" sub. Let me say, I couldn't be happier.

These speakers could take the Pepsi challenge with much higher cost speakers and suprise many a listener.

I was sceptical with JBL at first, but for the price, I thought I would give them a try.

The mids and highs are terrific and reproduce music with extreme clarity. I listen to a wide variety of music and have no complaints. The bass frequencies are tight and not over-powering. I was expecting more bass with these giants having a big 12 thrower, but I am more than happy since I have a nice sub. I would love to hear the S412's as they have a built in amp for the woofer! The bass must be devastating. These speaker really are not lacking in any department.

For HT, these speakers really shine as well. From the Red Violin to ID4 these JBL's have kept me happy.

JBL has done a great job with this Studio series. I am glad I purchased the entire set and I am not sure you can beat the quality for the price. In my opinion and if you have the space for them, you can't go wrong.

Strength:

Clarity, clean and I mean clean crisp high, mids, and bass

Weakness:

Ha Ha Weight....75 pounds apiece

I just hooked these up today to my system.....Yamaha 2095, ATI 1505 150x5 amp, Mirage 0M8s, BP150i sub, JBL S Center, Rane Equalizer and (can I say this in public "Bose Satellites" for front effects). I am totally and I mean totally impressed with these speakers...another word for them AWESOME. One of the previous reviewers commented about lack of bass....maybe it's because you have a 100 watt Rotel amp (just kidding). Bass seems fine, the clarity of the highs and mid is 'WOW'. Now are they as good as my Mirage OM8s? You can't compare the two, it's like mixing apples and oranges, a 3 way versus Omni Polar. I will say this you won't be disappointed with them and you can go out and buy yourself a DVD player with the money you will save over the OM8s.

Strength:

volume, clarity, bass

Weakness:

midrange

For starters, my system consists of Rotel 951 CD player and Rotel 100x2 Integrated Amplifier driving a pair of JBL S312. Bass is pretty clean and tight, but I was honestly expecting a little more bass out of a speaker this size, at times it seems lacking especially at lower volumes. For the price I paid, (around $600 from Buyitnow.com) these speakers are very good as I like to rock and can turn these up to loud volumes and they still sound very clean and don't distort. However, for quieter and more critical listening, the midrange and the tweeter are not as smooth and warm sounding as the B&W's I previously owned. However, that is the trade-off you get owning large speakers like this for under $1000 bucks. When I feel like rocking out to some Van Halen, Rush, or Humble Pie, I can crank these bad boys up and they never fail to bring a smile to my face. However, when I feel like relaxing to some more mellow music, I do miss the silky, warm highs and midrange of the B&W mini-monitors. But, as I am on a budget I couldn't afford a 'high-end' speaker with large woofer that would rock loud, so I turned to the JBL S312 and overall am very satisfied. Right now I am running Monster Cable XP speaker wire, and am thinking of switching to the AudioQuest Type 4+. This may help with the highs and mids, although I did use the Monster's with the B&W's, and those things sang. Well, these things will keep me happy for the next couple years until I graduate college and get my own place to live, then I will be shopping for some serious high end, full-range speakers. Overall these are not the greatest sounding speakers out there, but they sound great at loud volumes and for the price put out good sound quality, much better than the similar sized Cerwin-Vega's I used to own.

Strength:

Great quality for its price range; traditional JBL sound

Weakness:

Size & weight

For $269 each plus shipping, these are the best sounding JBLs I've heard in a long time. Well rounded sound, clarity in the highs, and that tight, clean JBL bottom. I've heard more accurate speakers, but never at this price. I'd compare these to the VW Jetta-- a very high-performance car for its price class. The overall sound is not as tight and clean as my Genelecs at work, but considering the money-- very good. I expected some boomy bass, but that is not the case at all. Strong, but not disproportionate low end. There is just something about the 12" woofer that cannot be duplicated (IMHO) by even brilliantly done 6" speakers & ports. If you have the room for them, buy 'em!

Strength:

I had been using some older Advent Legacy speakers and my son visited the coast this summer with his family from Portland. He hd been listening to some cd's and mentioned that the speakers were ok ,especially the mid-range but the lacked "sparkle"I did some research and found the reviews here very helpful.(thanks) > The JBL S312's have exceeded my expectations and I am hearing subtle tones that have truly brought excellent music to my place. I have found that the highs and mid sounds are excellent and the bass rich and solid. I recommend them highly!!!

Strength:

Clarity, Balance

Weakness:

shipping packaging

I would highly recommend these speakers to anyone who appreciates clarity and balance from their system. These speakers will not accentuate bass as is so common these days, but instead will present an accurate representation of the original source. They sound amazing at fairly loud volumes, so watch your clipping levels. Nice cabs (mine are in Cherry...), minimalistic but functional and decent looking grills.
These are capable of large dynamics without loss of detail with a good soundstage. Not intended for the head banger, but capable of supporting one if required ;-).
A very nice product and good all rounder - you will not be disappointed.
Check your shipping boxes carefully, as there is minimal protection offered inside other than air gap...that department could use some improvement....
Overall very good, and will compete easily at twice the price. A fairly accurate statement of pro quality in the home.

Strength:

clean sound at high and low volume. good balance great base without sub for HT hear things I never knew exsisted in the music

Weakness:

Heavy...but thats ok

I was on a hunt for the right speaker and actually fell in love with the Cerwin Vega SVT series but my buget was around $500 - $600 and the vegas were $1000.00. I need loud and clean. My older vegas did well but they were not magnetically sheilded and I had blown the cones on the woofers. I came across a deal on the s312's and I had looked before but in the retail store they are to much. Hunt the web for them. I run a Sony STR-3G receiver thats 5 years old at 100 wats per and it produce clear sound from the highs to the lows. With my receiver the bass is thunderous. I accually have to back it off at times because it rattles my windows. The speakers are in a room with a two storey vault ceiling and have no problem filling the room. Even in standard two channel Dolby on the HT the sound is incredible. i highly reccomend these speakers even at $1000.00.

Strength:

Clarity of tones at high volume, bass (only at high volume)

Weakness:

bass at low volume level, Neighbors complaining at high volume level.....

These speakers are a good deal for both starter and the audiophile. I can't turn the dial up no way near half-way without rattling the windows and disturbing the other ppl in the building. For less than 600 bucks, these monsters are a good deal.

The only problem is the bass is lacking that extra thump when the volume is low but an extra sub will take care of that problem. Had a little difficulty getting them out of the box (over anxiousness I guess). As for HT, these speakers truly shine. I cant watch tv without them anymore.
These babys put that tv speaker to shame!

Overall I recommend them to any true music and ht lover.

Strength:

Excellent flat frequency response, good build quality, value

Weakness:

Speaker grills could be more durable

I have had these speakers as my mains in my home theater setup for about 3 months now. I am very happy with their accuracy, imaging, and neutral frequency response. To give you an idea of my system:

Mains: JBL 312's
Center: JBL S-Center
Surrounds: JBL S-36's
Subwoofer: Velodyne FSR-15
Receiver: Denon 2801
DVD: Pioneer Elite DV-37

These Studio series speakers from JBL are EXCELLENT for the money. I spent many hours researching and listening and couldn't find a better sounding speaker for the money. This is a tough price point, however, and there are MANY good speakers in this price range. The reasons I chose JBL? They offered a complete package with matching tweeters and mids for perfect timbre, they have a good finish and build, and they look great with or without the grills... and most importantly, they borrow components and designs from JBL's profession studio speakers... hence, the "poor bass" - I see many reviews of people complaing about the lack of bass for 12" speaker. Well, bass is what a subwoofer is for. And these speakers are FLAT. Meaning that they are accurate, and don't over emphasize any one frequency. They are not your typical rock 'n roll JBL speakers you'd find pumping in a frat house. Go to Cerwin Vega if that is what you're looking for. But, if you'd like a natural, accurate sounding speaker, try these out. But look elsewhere than bestbuy to demo. Try to find a dealer who will let you demo them in your home. The listening conditions are bestbuy are horrible.

Hope this helps.
