Strength:

Big, these are man speakers
heavy, no one will try to steal these
crystal clear sound

Weakness:

I'm still trying to get the rest of the packing peanuts out of the bass port, but thats e-tronics, not JBL.

These speakers are awesome. After reading all the reviews here, I got the 312's from "etronics" for 275.00 each. I also got the S-38's and S-center. Most people who describe the 312's as FLAT are correct. The bass is crisp and clean, and these speakers are not meant to be in a frat house, or rattle the back window of a chopped down truck. Any type of music I listen to is incredibly life like. DVD's have me looking outside to see if its raining. I would recommend these guys to anyone.

Strength:

Clarity, visual "presence," quality of construction.

Weakness:

Weight (70 lbs each).

Went through an impulse-buying spree in the Fall after living with the Bose Acoustimass satellites and "bass" module for the previous 6 years. Decided to go retro and purchase main speakers that would sound - and look - impressive. Reviews here greatly influenced my decision to go for the S312 from JBL. Even more satisfying was finding them at DYNADIRECT.COM for $269 per. Best Buy wants $449.00 apiece! I was first impressed with these speakers during the unpacking process - they're heavy and a tad on the unweildy side. On first playing I was very pleased with the mid- and high-range reproduction but a bit disappointed with the bottom end. The addition of a JBL
PB-10 sub soon provided the needed augmentation down to 20HZ. My initial AV Receiver was a rather low-range Kenwood. I recently replaced this component with a Denon AVR-3300 AV Receiver (more reviews here motivated me to this unit as well). The difference in sound repro with the addition of the Denon is very noteworthy. Highs and mids remain faithfully represented, but the bottom end is now especially pleasing. I'm very happy with my purchase and have adjusted to the necessity of doing some stretching exercises before moving these behemoths!

Strength:

Good quality feel. Great looking. Great sounding. Gold binding posts.

Weakness:

plastic badging is a little flimsy.

I have to say I am truly impressed with these speakers. I was originally planning on picking up a sub, but I think I'll save my money because these speakers more than fill my desire for bass. These speakers are easily worth twice what I paid for. I have these speakers hooked up to a Denon 2800 and my ears were ringing at 0dB volume level. I think I'll be happy with these speakers for a long time. Took ubid a couple weeks to get out to me, but when it did it was in excellent condition.

Strength:

Great Sound, Great Quality, Great Price

Weakness:

peaks a little high for my ears, but don't think thats really too much of a bad thing (and I only notice it on a few albums). Cheap Gills (but who cares? they're not that bad)

Amazing sound, good loud and soft (though you can't get them even near their top volume without having to be 100 ft away).

They are really heavy, so that really killed me on shipping from ubid! (but considering I got them for 363.45 shipped, new, I'm not complaining)...I'd ratehr have a heavier speaker anyway, so I know they atleast put something in it.

They are way too big for my room, but they still sound great, and right now all I have is them (surrounds are coming soon, and I still need to order a center channel)

Don't think you can get a better pair of quality speakers for this price!

Strength:

Beautiful Sound, very good-looking speakers w/ grills removed, nice wide soundstage

Weakness:

To some people their sheer weight may be a weakness, but to me the weight shows a well built product.

These speakers are an excellent buy from ubid.com- easily the best deal I've ever gotten on any speaker ($373.88 shipped)

These speakers are not for someone seeking stomach quaking bass...these are for anybody who wants a truly accurate, neutral, spacious speaker. These speakers do have bass however- tight, musical bass you can hear and feel, just not to the point of queasyness....if rap or heavy metal is your thing, you may want to consider a good sub for visceral effect.

My only complaint with these speakers is that they only have one set of binding posts...I would love to bi-amp these babies. Maybe then I could get that 12" woofer moving just a little harder.

The real story with these speakers is their ability to reproduce music with clarity and punch, while not over-emphasizing any specific frequency range. I listen to everything from Elliot Smith to Pantera through these, and I get drunk on these speakers everytime- I've gone through my whole CD and Vinyl collection listening to these speakers reproduce sounds I've never heard before and balance out the sounds I had.

I noticed an earlier reviewer complain about ubid's slow shipping. I had no such problem. The day after the auction closed my credit card was charged, the next day they were on a fedex truck, and exactly 7 business days after I won my auction, the fedex guy was helping me muscle these into my living room.

jandr.com also sells these for the very respectable price of 499.99 and with them you get the 5-year manufacturers warranty plus the choice of beech, black, or cherry finish. Ubid only has the beech, but to me that is the most attractive finish anyway. I'm not too concerned with my lack of warranty...if these last me a year I'll be happy and I'm sure I'll have them much longer than that

5 stars for a excellent speaker at an excellent price.

Sound

Weakness:

nope, none....

Big speaker with quailty sound at a pretty good price. Excellent build with a huge bass speaker. What is a bezel? A bezel makes a speaker kick ass. Other then that I don't have a clue what a bezel. The Tweeter really sparkles. The midrange is strong and direct. the bass more then covers the low range. Don't be shy give these a try. They rock!!

Strength:

It's a JBL. Enough said.

Weakness:

They're pretty big........

This is the fifth pair of JBL speakers that I have ppurchased, and I still have them all. I just took delivery of them today, actually, so this is a fresh review of the product, but they are what I expected and then some........

For those of us who came of age during the reign of His Majesty, the mighty JBL L100 Century, we finally see their equal after all these years. It damn near brought tears to my eyes...........

These speakers define again what anyone who owns a JBL product knows as "that JBL sound".......that certain *je ne sais quoit* that only JBL delivers: the authoritative thump of tight bass, an airy, forward midrange and clean, crisp highs. They will tattle on bad recordings, too......

And as with any other top-of-the-line JBL, the S312 really shines when you crank it up.

The S312, like His Majesty the L100, is a jaw-dropping rock 'n' roll speaker, but unlike His Majesty it is also supremely able with any type of music, and as a home theatre main speaker (His Majesty is sometimes not amused by classical.....).

I give these speakers my highest recommendation.

Long live the King!

this is a update

Weakness:

see below

Well I just got the ar-s40s from ubid (on a sat no less)
and out of the box they are a better all round sounding speaker than the jbl s312.. granted the bass is a bit weaker but the sound is seamless all the way to a sizzler dancing on a cymbal. and these are HT speakers.. not too big.. not to small. at less than 1/2 the price i have a better set of speakers and am ordering another set today. The JBL's are still very good speakers.. they are just not for everyone. and like the truely honest reviewers have stated. they are not HT speakers in any stretch of the imagination. Im sending them home with my son tomorrow.. I hope they drive my x-wife up a wall. (now where are those roadies when you need them?) The JBLS at UBID prices about 150 ea)are a darn good deal... at $800 they arent

Strength:

Very detailed, nice control depth of bass unlike my ND310s.

Weakness:

None so far.

I consider myself a audio enthusiast who enjoys speakers that sound very detailed and balanced. These fit the bill very nicely. When I purchased my ND310s last year those speakers sounded great but the studio series were way out of my price range. On some of the more bassy music the ND310's it was like the dual 10" woofers were fighting each other, and I always hated that. My ND310s still sound lovely, but my Studio series are everything and more. The bass is controlled and has a very nice deep feeling you can feel. The mids and tweets that come out are very detailed and acurate. Pearl Harbor sounded awesome on my system. For 393 Shipped from ubid what a bargin!! Last year I could not get these for less than $600 a pair plus shipping. Beware ubid takes awhile to get these shipped out. All in all im very happy with my purchase.

Strength:

They handle everything. Great soundstage.

Weakness:

None

Way back in 1975 I passed up buying a pair of new L100's due to budget constraints of a young family. I got a pair of L26's and I still have them. They are fine speakers. But I always wanted something closer to the L100's. These S312 speakers exceed those wishes. They handle all kinds of music wonderfully. Spent the weekend weekend testing them out with different receivers I own. Even the low power receiver sounds great with these speakers. Paid $393 total for the pair new from Ubid. Best Buy wanted over $900. JBL should be proud of these speakers they are fantastic.
