Strength:

bass as clear as can be with bass radiator, sounds twice as clear as any typical ported speaker.

Weakness:

some might dislike the fact that you hear the bass clearly instead of feeling it distort off everything around you

Those that doubt KLH speakers ability to produce clear and precise highs and lows should really shut their mouth until they have listened to these, When I was searching for speakers to go with my Harman Kardon AVR300 reciever I looked and listened to Bose, JBL, Sony and pioneer amoung others. I especially enjoyed the JBL speakers I listened to. But when It came down to it I couldn''t tell the difference between a JBL speaker with a 15" woofer, titanium dome, liquid cooled tweeter, and a polymer midrange and these KLH speakers. for those who would spend an extra 400$ for a little tag that says JBL on the front of the speaker, go ahead, I''ll pocket that money and buy my speakers based on how they sound, not the label.

Strength:

they're loud

Weakness:

everything except the ability to go loud

While searching for a cheap DVD player for my kids room at Best Buy I found these speakers. I was intrigued by their size and by their price. I figured I would give them a try. Since they claim they handled 350watts a peice I hooked them up to the biggest amps I had around, dual 200 watt monoblocks. I must I was impressed initially when I began listening. However, the more and more time I listened and with more diverse types of music the more I disliked these speakers. The lows are boomy and overpowering and the highs are tinny. The midrange is muffled and squackes at certain frequencies. If you love listening to rap or rock at high volumes and don't care much about fidelity then give these a try, otherwise do yourself a favor and save money for some quality speakers.

Strength:

Exellent Highs and Bass

Weakness:

Factory Midrange is very coarse sounding

I bought these speakers back in 1990 when the were AV 5001's(different tweeter is the difference) and they have served me well. The factory midranges are a beat coarse sounding so I replaced them with aftermarket units and they sound a lot better. I was surprised by the bass they put out for only a 12" woofer. Overall I am very pleased with them and would reccomend them to anyone.

Strength:

Inexpensive relatively big sound, good bass and highs

Weakness:

Poor build quality, mid-range gets muddy fast when the volume goes up

These are decent enough to last me until I can afford a good set of speakers. Power rating is 5-350 watts, but my 120watt/channel receiver sounds like it will destroy them if I take the volume past half way. Highs and lows are decent. Mid-range is OK at lower volume levels, but sounds like it will blow first when cranking it up.

When I first hooked them up to my first receiver (funny thing about it was that Pioneer said it was 130watts/ch, but my current Sony 120watt seems to have twice the power), after about a week the cabinet veneers came unglued on heavy bass and would rattle like a baby's toy. I called customer service at KLH who told me to super glue them if I didn't want to wait 6-8 weeks while warranty work was done. I guess they count on customers not taking advantage (!) of the 10 year gaurantee (someone else said 5 years, but mine came from Costco with a 10). Anyway, the super glue did work, so I'm OK for now.

Overall, not bad for watching movies - big enough sound to feel the action, detailed enough to hear most soundtrack subtleties. OK for music - the mid range just isn't that musical.

Price Warranty

Great speakers. The sound is really good. One of the active woofers did not work out of the box,but they replaced the whole speaker and it is great. Economical speaker that sounds great plus a five year warranty. The sound is much better than any pioneer I have ever had. To every one out there please do not buy any pioneer with the side firing woofer. Thank you

I first learned of KLH speakers last year at a friend's home. He's a young pediatrician who happens to love classicals. I remember the sound coming off his KLH sounds great, and since he's young and sort of yuppie, I thought to myself that the KLH must be some expensive speakers. I was surprised when I was at BestBuy recently and found out how inexpensive the KLHs are. I was very lucky that, for the almost one hour I spent in the listening room, I almost have had the room to myself. There, I compared the KLH to Bose, JBL, Sony, Cerwin Vega, and Yamaha. After listening and picking out the speakers of each brand that best fit my taste, I walked around the room comparing the various speakers I selected. I concluded that the KLH sounds every bit as good as the Cerwin Vega & JBL, and better than the others. Plus, for the best part, the KLH is at about one third to one fourth the price of Cerwin Vega & JBL.

I'm very happy with my decision to purchase the AV5001. I bought this KLH to replace the JBLs I bought two years ago which unfortunately didn't last me very long. I get great sound from these AV5001 speakers. Crystal clear highs with deep strong bass. Vocals are clear. String quartets sounds like they're playing right in the room. Music really comes alive with these speakers. And someday, should some mishaps happen to the AV5001, I won't be as heartbroken as when my $1,000 JBLs was smashed last winter when my son decided to do somersaults on that cold winter night. Boy, what a mistake to buy moderately expensive speakers for a growing family with active kids in the house. Hopefully now that my son is a little older that he'll understand that there are some delicate things in the family room. But yet, isn't the family room where we all want our kids to be playful?

I just wanted to say my speakers are the AV5000's not the 5001's. Same speaker different tweeter. I reviewed them a few reviews back but made a typo. Also anyone having sound problems with these speakers may wanna look at your equipment as I have played these on alot of different receivers and amps and they have always sounded wonderful especially when I changed the midrange to a smoother one. Just my .02

These speakers are a waste of your money. I thought I might get some use out of them but I was wrong. The sound is terrible and they are too big to find a place to put. These speakers do make noise good though.

Strength:

Good sound quality. Inexpensive. Can't beat these for the $$$.

I have never been too thrilled with "KLH" products, but I must admit, I've been using these speakers for over five years and they truly can't be beat for the money. I've never regretted purchasing them. The lows are impressive, and the highs and mids are better than what I'd expect at this price range. I'm sure these have been discontinued, and as I look around at what's offered now in the market place, you can't get anything close to this for $200. Very impressive overall for the money.
