Whoops, forgot a few other things I wanted to mention...For some perspective, I'm running a 50+5 watt Threshold amp, that deafens around, 3.5 on the dial, Carver C-1 Pre, another good reason for getting Klipsch is that a little high quality amplification is a lot more affordable than a lot of high quality amplification. Obviously these are not made for small rooms, I've had them in a very large room, and they filled nicely, spaciousness and depth was very nice. If you into powerful, dynamic music, and especially if you are working with a budget, definately audition the Klipsch that fits you price range.
Oh yea, regardless of price range, I really don't think you'll a speaker that better reproduces drums, a very serious flaw in many speakers across the board. Compare the drums you hear next time you see a live band to the drums you hear in you speakers at home...

I purchased my first pair of Klispch speakers in 1983. I selected the LaScalla because because I wanted something more portable than the Klipschorn ei.cornerhorn. About five years ago I found a pair of Klipschorns "used". I pushed the LaScallas to the center and flanked them with the Klipschorns. This I decided was awesome sound! Now, with all the excitement about "surround sound" these days, I felt left out. I wanted to explore the relm of home theater. I tried to find "Belle" for the center channel, and couldn't. However, I did find another pair of Klipschorns. I just added these babies to the rear. Now what to drive them with? My wife by now, is gettinga little pissed. So Mcintosh equipment is out of the question. So I settled for a DENON AVR 5700 to complete the system. This combination is not THX certified, I admit. However, when my friends come over for a movie, the expressions on there faces tells all. It's as if they had a religious experience. After the movie I switch over to five channel stereo and crank up some good blues CD's. Try that with THX bi-polar arrangement. If all you do is watch movies,(witch I doubt)THX stuff may be the way to go.

Great bass production but a fairly disapointing mid-range and overly bright highs. Not a great choice for classical/acoustic jazz, but if you like your music loud this one has impressive dynamics.

When I first bought these used for $400, I thought how could I go wrong. I got them home and they sounded o.k. I only had a NAD 55 watt receiver to drive them. Not the sound I was looking for. Bought some Linn AV5140s (which are now for sale!)...In a nutshell, I had a chance to audition a Krell KAV300i in search of a real amp to drive the Linn's. The amp sounded terrible with the Linn's, but powering the Klipsch's---simply awesome. I now have concert like sound in my living room---volume can go louder than you can imagine, sonically clear, vocals are right in front of you and not coming from the speaker. Imaging and soundstage are awesome. Not the cleanest, detail revealing speakers, but if you want a concert in your living room, or you want to feel like you're right there in the recording studio, these klipsch 4.5's and a fantastic amp like the krell will make it happen. These speakers, with a rockin' amp changed from standard joe-blow speakers to concert sound thumping beauties. Absolutely jaw dropping performance if this type of sound is what you are looking for. I was.Parting words...For sale: Linn AV5140s...immaculate condition...hardly used.

My CD collection is extensive and varied but consists mostly of rock and blues. I have owned a pair of Klipsch kg4.2's for several years. I never undertood the criticism leveled against horn speakers as I find mine to be hash free at volume levels that would cause hearing impairment if maintained for any period of time. The sound is sweet, uncolored, and enormously spacious. I recently added a HSU Research 12" sub woofer to augment the low end and the combination is quite magical. The Hsu's came with their own 250 watt amplifier w/ appropriate cross-overs. The Klipsch are powered by Rotel amp (120 watts) and pre-amp. CD transport is Audio Alchemy as is D/A converter. Total system cost approx. $3500.00 and I would defy anyone to find fault with sound throughout the spectrum in a blindfold test. While $3500.00 is still a bit of money in my universe, I feel my system can stand up to systems costing much, much more (including one I heard recently costing over $60,000. You don't have to be rich to attain musical nirvana.

My musical tastes run the gamut , from 60's acid rock to classical, from jazz to country. After listening to dozens of speakers in my price range, the Klipsch won out by simply sounding better through out my musical tastes. Sure, some are better for jazz or classical or something , but to me nothing sounds better than the 4.5s. They are somewhat limited in the midrange, being 2 way speakers but my cure for that was a Def. Tech. PF1500. Now not only do I have the crystal clear highs Klipsch are known for I am hearing MUCH more in the mid range than I have before. High effiency (LOUD), good clear bass down to 36Hz. with highs to match, excellant price and a 5 yr. warranty, what more can you ask for? I recommend these speakers to anyone in the market for a set of $600 speakers.

Well I liked the KG 3.5's so well, I traded them up for the 4.5's. Very good step up for $150 more. I admit to having a bias towards Klipsch. I know audiophiles might prefer something more transparent like planar speakers, but I like how the Klipsch sound. The music is dynmaic and lively. You get plenty of bass and lots of efficency from these speakers. They pair well with inexpensive quality recivers which usualy are lower powered like low cost H/K's, Yamaha, NAD etc.. but they also do well with powerful amps. Some people might prefer other speakers so judge for yourself. I enjoy mine especially for the money. You get quality and quantity of sound. For entry level or low mid level speakers it's usualy one or the other.

This review is for the KG 5.5. In an overused word...awesome! If you want to close your eyes and believe the musicians are right there in the room with you; then you should give these speakers a listen. If your looking for that chill factor, give these a listen. Clean and as dynamic as anything I've ever gave a listen to yet. When the music is soft, their soft. When the music slams they hit as hard as anything but a live concert. Crystal clear mids and highs to the point that some think them bright but they have no problem relaying the truth of any recording. So if the recording is bright you get bright; but oh the wonderful bass range. Stong but not muddy, a snare drum sounds just like a snare. A bass guitar has definition. Over all they run the full gamit of the musical spectrum with clarity and definition. True they may not be on the audiophile's wish list but maybe thats because the audiophile magazines don't give them due attention. If you'll take the chance and decide for yourself maybe you too will be a Klipsch enthusiast. AWESOME POWERFUL AND COOKIN!

Strength:

good bass responce. plays clear & loud.

Weakness:

none i have found.

i bought these from a local pawn shop for 450.00. listened to them before i bought them, but not at loud levels. sounded great so i bought them. got them home, & played at louder volumes, the boxes would rattle with deep loud bass notes. i was very disapointed to say the least. i called a local klipsch retailer & told of the problem with the cabinets. they said never heard of that before & offered to send to klipsch. 2 weeks later i had 2 totally rebuilt 5.5's. klipsch repaired the cabinets (glue came undone on rear panel) & replaced 2 woofers & a tweeter that were partially blown. i was surprised that klipsch honored warranty work, even though i was a second or third owner. very pleased with klipsch as a company, & even more pleased with the performance of my newly rebuit speakers.
have yet to find a better speaker for anywhere near their msrp price, let alone my pawn shop price! highly recomended if you can find them.
