I have been holding off on buying my dream system for about 8 years now because of monetary concerns. But when I started auditioning speakers a month ago and listened to these speakers, I was taken aback. I LOVED these speakers and simply had to have them! Being a percussionist, I have played in wind ensembles and orchestras through college and also marched in 2 Drum & Bugle Corps during the summer of 1992 and 1993. So my ear for speakers and what I want to hear (big, clear bass sounds, but not too boomy, lots of clarity in the high treble end to hear xylophone/marimba runs from drum corps and also string runs in orchestras) is very partuclar.
I sampled 3 different CD's with these speakers. First I put in the Planets by Gustav Holst (Montreal Sypmhony with Charles Dutoit) and listened to the Mars track. Every classical music enthusiast has heard of this big, ominous piece by Holst. The dynamics in this piece require a speaker that can distinguish a remote sound and also give clear sounds when the orchestra is playing as loud as they can. I heard this with these speakers within that piece. I also sampled the Jupiter track and loved the clarity of the string runs. I then put in a drum corps CD of Santa Clara Vanguard's 1999 show. This included a minimalist piece by Philip Glass called the Canyon. Again, same clarity of sound and both ends of the dynamic spectrum. I had chills going up my spine from listening to this piece. My 3rd CD I put in was Moving Pictures by Rush (yes Neil Peart, the drummer is a GOD and I had to put some heavy drum/percussion pieces to test these speakers!!). I listened to Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight. Again, the clarity and presence of each player within Rush is heard through these speakers! I also loved how the quality of sound is the same no matter where you are standing in the room. I had to have these speakers!!

The best thing is.... I got these speakers for US $1800!!!! Yup, bought them from a home therater/audio specialty store called Home Entertainment, INC. (home page is http://www.home-e.com) who has an exlusive deal with Mirage to sell their products at the lowest prices available. They also carried the Definitive Technology BP2000 series. I loved those speakers too, but the Mirage seem clearer in the low end of the sound spectrum. For US $1800 (retail US $3000), these speakers are a STEAL!!! I also plan on getting the OM-C2 center channel, and the OM-R2 rear channel speakers to complete my home theater. I would definitely recommend these speakers to anyone looking for an awesome speakers under US $3000!

Equipment:
2 OM-6 Main/Front Speakers
Yamaha RX-V795a Receiver/Amplifier
OM-C2 center channel (future purchase)
2 OM-R2 satellite speakers (future purchase)

Got this baby for $1700/pair. At this price it's very hard to beat. I compared them to the DefTech 2000 and the OM6 sounds better in my opinion. The bass is not as powerful/loud as the DefTech but very tight and clean. The Mids and highs are much better or should I say clearer than DefTech. I've been listening and shopping for speakers for the past 6 months and I'm glad I found these OM6. They just sound great to my ear. Check out these speakers and they may be yours to keep.

Strength:

well balance sound

Weakness:

none so far

I have had this pair of Mirage OM-6 for about two months. So far it sounded great and the break in period is not over yet. I was debating the om-6 or the definitive bp2000 since they were at the same price range(didn't want to deal with a separate sub unit). I have to admit that the definitive does play louder and goes deeper in the bass department, great for movies. However, I find the sound of the om-6 to be more refined and better for music, which is what I am looking for. I have played the eagles(DTS), fifth element, heat, eraser, michael jackson history on film(very cool), and many others....All sounded nothing less of spectacular. The other reason that lean me toward the om-6 was the $1800 price instead of $3000. Can't go wrong.

Strength:

Detailed sound, massive soundstage

Weakness:

Odd shape, weird looks

These are awesome speakers that really reveal the quality (or lack thereof) of recordings. They are great at $3000, a bargain at $1800. Look out for the new OM-5 coming soon from Mirage.

I have to agree with the posts below. I listenend to these things today during my lunch break for about half an hour and they are definately the best speakers I've ever heard. They were incredibly natural and detailed, and furthermore had probably the deepest soundstage I've ever heard from a speaker. What was really amazing though was that they were being run off a cheap pre-power from NAD (worth about 500 US dollars) and the sound was still fantastic! (Great to find a US$3000 speaker that isn't overly sensitive to associated equipment nor placement. These things have a sensitivity of 91db into 8 ohms) I've listened to Martin-Logan Aerius' and SL3's, Vandersteen 2Ce's and 3A, DT BP2000's (used to own BP8's - yuck) and these Mirage's flattened all of 'em. (Actually, they didn't really flatten the SL3's! I love both these speakers, but I think if I had to choose, I'd go for the Mirage's due to their ease of placement within a room and their ease of compatability with regard to associated equipment...) The Aerius was more in my price range, and I loved it when I auditioned it, but I couldn't live with its lack of bass. The Mirage's had a LOT more of the transparency and detail I loved about the Aerius, plus they had GREAT bass!! (Due to their active subwoofers) I currently own Vandersteen 2Ce's. If I had the $6000 OZ dollars these Mirage's cost I'd go out and buy 'em in a second because they make my Vandersteen's sound fairly mid-fi!! (Although for the price difference between the two that could be expected!!) I'm gonna take my Krell KAV-300i to the store this weekend to give the Mirage's another listen and hear what they can REALLY sound like! Today's audition also included the Rotel RCD-971 (HDCD) cd player and VDH interconnects and cables.
An enthusiastic 5 stars....

I recently bought the Denon AVC-A1 amp which gave my old Sony speakers a heart attack so it was time to upgrade. I had listened to several speakers from B&W's to several Australian brands when I was told about the Mirage OM-6's which would suit both my home theatre and music needs.
At first I was a bit sceptical but after the HiFi shop got a pair in for me and I sat down for a listen I was totally blown away by what I could hear. These speakers are superb to say the least and after the initial listening session I had to have a pair.

I only previewed the OM-6's for musicality and had to wait to get them home to listen to them with home theatre, all I can say is WOW !! I thought the bass fantastic with CD, as you can pick up aspects of the music that you just can't hear with other speakers, but the bass with movies is truely awesome.

The bass is tight and true with a treble that is sweet and accurate, I had expected the high's to be too bright but Mirage have done a superb job. I have listened to all types of music from classical to rock, from CD to Dolby Digital and these speakers easily cope with all that is thrown at them.

I won't go into technical details - if you want to know more about the specs, go to the Mirage home page and read the reviews and awards while your there.

All I can say is that if you are in the market for some speakers that add another dimension to music and movies, then give these beauties a test before you purchase your next speakers.

The Mirage OM6 speakers are not for everyone. Mirage hails them as a new technology, omni-polar. They appear to be an optimization of the bi-polar design which API (parent company of Mirage) developed a decade ago. When properly set up and when playing at moderate or higher levels, they create a uniform sound everywhere in the room. One may stand next to one of the speakers, in what would ordinarily be the "sweet spot", along a wall or in a corner, etc. The sound is the same. This is not to say that the sound is monophonic. Depending upon the equipment used, a greater or lesser degree of 3 dimensional imaging will be evident.
The speakers' sound seems to be very neutral. They allow the particular characteristics of each system component to be manifest. These speakers are definitely not the limiting factor in most systems.

I listened to a half dozen other bi-polar speakers at dealers. The Mirage OM series are the only ones that project a uniform sound about the room. For pure sound characteristics, I like the 6s better than more expensive Vandersteens, Magnapans and all other conventional bi-polars. The dual, opposed, 8 inch woofers have their own onboard 150W amplifiers giving excellent bass. This also allows for a smaller amp to adequately power the other speakers. Each speaker allows for highly variable control of the bass to match room and listening requirements.

The only criticisms I would give are that they make it difficult to project a 3 dimensional soundstage. Some pieces of equipment give a soundstage somewhat wider that the room, but the depth and height are minimal. Also, the diagram in the owner's manual yields suboptimal performance in my room. The dealer and I get best performance when the speakers are perpendicular to the back wall - not canted in.

If $3000 per pair is a bit steep, the OM10s (at $1200/pr.) would be an excellent alternative. At the dealer I listened to the 6s and 12s in the same room with the same equipment. The 12s were very good (I assume the 10s would be better) and they had the same characteristic of filling the room with uniform sound as the 6s. The 10s are the same as the 6s except without the woofers and onboard amplifiers (frequency range still exceeds the capability of most rooms, though).

You need to audition these speakers in your own environment with your own equipment unless the lack of depth in the soundstage is not important; otherwise, you will not be disappointed. For a system upgrade, I chose these speakers first, then selected the other components to optimize the sound. My new, 'blue collar' systems consists of: Classe CAP-100 integrated amp (Tara Labs Crystal cables), Arcam Alpha 8SE CD Player (WBT interconnects), Well Tempered Reference TT (Audioquest interconnects) and a Yamaha TX-950 tuner. (See my reviews of other components for more details).

Rating: 5 speakers with a qualification that a deep soundstage is not vital.

Fantastically good soundstage with clear highs and well-defined bass. These speakers really bring out the details in any kind of music. Probably quite unbeatable at this price.

Strength:

Large, deep sound stage, airy highs, liquid midrange and deep tight controlled bass

I recently unpgraded from the wonderful Mirage OM-10's to the OM-6's. These speakers are breathtaking. Clear, clean highs with a beautiful liquid midrange and tight deep well controlled bass. There is a noticeable improvement in the overall sonic performance when compared to the 10's. (the OM 6's are more then double the price). The OM-6's are an incredibly musical speaker; they get my foot tapping every time. I now have them pared with a Bryston 4B ST THX 250 X2 power amp, with AudioQuest Midnight + SA 20 Hyperlitz speaker cable. Source is very shortly to be the Meridian 508.24 CD player. Pre-amp is also being upgraded shortly to either the CAL pre or Brysrton SP1. These are a wonderful speaker for both audio and Home Theatre and I highly reccomend them to anyone.
