I auditioned the Mission 700, the PSB Alpha and the Mission 731. The 731s are way to forward; the highs are way too harsh and loud and consequently it's all you notice. With the Alphas, I find that I exaust myself trying to draw more out of them, and most of the time I don't succeed. The Mission 700 are just lovely. Smooth, subtle, clear, almost airy, never too harsh, but still provides a kick when needed. They look good too, and the price is fair for the quality (250$) canadian dollars.

Strength:

Great sound that will at a price that won't burn a hole in your wallet. Compact size for bookshelf or stand mounting.

Weakness:

Bass may be too light for some people.

As an owner of a nice pair of Akai speakers, despite the nice sound from them they were a little too big for my room. I decided to go out to purchase a pair of bookshelf speakers which not only would have to sound as good as my Akai speakers but also be something that I could afford. There were lots of various models to choose from and they all sounded pretty good.

The first pair of speakers I auditioned were the Bose 141. They were smallest speakers and they sounded pretty good for their size considering that there's only a single 4.5" full range driver. At $199 Cdn at the time, I felt that I could get a little more speaker for a better price.

The second pair of speakers were a nice pair of Pioneer bookshelf speakers. I've liked the looks of these speakers and appeared to be more of a higher end model. The sound was pretty good and the price was about the same as the Bose 141s. I still wanted to look around a bit more.

The third pair of speakers were a good pair of Yamaha mini towers. The sound from these were also pretty good, maybe a little better than the Pioneer speakers and the price was a little more. But since these were floor standers and not bookshelf speakers, I decided to look on.

The fourth pair was from Energy. They were small and the sound was outstanding! The price, however, was a little over my limit.

The final pair of speakers that I auditioned were the Mission 700s. Earlier that same year I stumbled upon the Mission 700 series and listed to the 702s. I would have went for the 702s but they were $599 Cdn. I've been familiar with Mission's line of speakers for a long time. If still available I would have bought the pair of Missions which featured the nice 8' poly woofers. When I first listened to the Mission 700s I thought that they were a little light at first but once the volume was turned up a bit I decided that these were the speakers for me. They gave just the right amount of bass and the overall sound was very flat and clean. For the price of only $250 Cdn I liked them even more. The overall appearance of these speakers along with the dual front ports made them very pleasing to the eye. Having the woofer placed above the tweeter make look unusual for an inexpensively priced speaker but it does serve a purpose. It helps to position the bass higher up from the floor to improve bass response. The Mission 700s are suitable for any type of music from classical to modern. I'm using a nice pair of speaker stands that I got from Ikea which raises speakers up to 3'. Just like one of the other reviewers, I also use my Mission 700s as computer speakers. I hope to buy another pair of these beauties while they're still available.

If you're one who's looking for very deep base, the Mission 700s may not be for you. You might want to go with a pair of Mission 701 or 702 instead or add a good subwoofer to compliment the 700s.

Strength:

Beautifully constructed.

Weakness:

Bass is invisible. Is this Brit version of a Bose?

Yikes... These speakers are pretty to look at. The sound quality leaves much to be desired with dance tracks eps. Bass is sadly missing in every beat. The mid rang and highs are decent but don't expect it to blow sonic heavens even in a small room. Very disappointing bass despite all that jazz abt the construction and reputation. Tannoy M1 beats it flat costing 40% less in Australia. I know i will stay away from Mission products for the rest of time.

At $250 Cdn, the Mission 700's are very nice little speakers as long as you don't expect miracles. I use them in my tiny 10' x 7' computer room, where I have them hooked up to a Rotel 930AX CD player and a NAD 310 integrated amp. They work very well in this setup, and an added bonus is that I can use them as computer speakers as well.
The mid-range is very smooth and detailed, the highs are not too harsh, and the bass is quite good for their size. They also have excellent dynamics and good imaging (if placed far enough away from each other) and seem to be at their best when reproducing the sound of the human voice. In larger rooms they sound much less impressive, especially in the low frequency range.

If you have a small listening room and don't mind playing around with the positioning to get the best sound, you definitely get your money's worth with these speakers.

Strength:

Good range for small speaker, nice imaging, perfect as surrounds

Weakness:

None so far

I bought the Mission 701's as fronts a while back and was looking for these to match as surrounds. I put off getting them until the price dropped (700 series is no longer made by Mission). I found them at a good price and picked them up. They replaced a pair of Cerwin-Vega LS-5's which weren't bad but I wanted the surrounds to timbre match the fronts. They would probably be a liitle weak as fronts, but would probably do well in a mini system or in a bedroom setup (where my LS-5's ended up). For a small speaker they have a decent low end and have same great clarity in the mid's and highs that I love from the 701's. Build quality is good, just what I expect from Mission. Oh, and I just realized you can take the plastic plugs out of the binding post and use bananna plugs (DOH!) which I will do with the others as well. All in all a great buy. Even with the fantastic pricing you can find on these and other 700 series models now, they still would have be an excellent purchase when this line first came out.
BTW. I've listened to the new lines from Mission and still like these better.
5 stars for the bargian, and 5 for meeting and exceeding my expectations.

Strength:

Excellent definition on high end

Weakness:

Very difficult to install, takes forever to find the correct placement but worth the trouble...Boxy bass

I've been using Mission loudspeakers for over 10 years now and always were very satisfied with them. Over the years, I have found few speakers that deliver as much for the buck as my 700 do.

Strength:

smooth mid range

Weakness:

none, considering what I paid for them

I use them for rear and center channel speakers in a secondary home theater setup and am very happy with them. Some people have complained about lack of bass but for there size I don't know how much more you could expect without a sub woofer.
