Strength:

Good value for money. Good treble range.

Weakness:

Poor and cheap finishing (I had to take the woofer out and put some vilt under it to stop unwanted sounds)

I use them as backgroundspeakers in combination with my Mission 702e set. I''ve got a Luxman L4 2x60w continuous (1978) (18kg.!!!!) integrated amplifier. Everything is installed in my 4x4m bedroom so you can emagine that this sounds great. The 701 series produce a very rich sound for their size. It has s good tweeter and enough bass.

A hard choice to make because several good performers in this price bracket, but after a pathetic attempt to listen to them at a store (their listening room is 25 foot wide and the speakers face each other from opposite sides of the room..
ANyhow I liked the mid clarity, base not too overbearing, and the highs have a sparkle to them. Female voices sounded good to me so I took em home. Hooked them up to the ole ST70 (hardly one anymore but you get the idea). The missions sing! dynamices are good, staging is good and well balanced.

Classical violin is good, they swing to concord Jazz :-) Rock is clear and instruments have their own space. Dolly sounded a little thin on a couple of tracks but everything else was great. Celine is special especially track 8 on her recent compilation albumn.

THe speaker seems to handle bass overload very well compared to other I auditioned.

I was impressed that the manual said to run em in before experimenting with placement. THey have been running for 5 hours! In another 19 I will fool with placement. They seem to like short stands a the moment.

I would recommend them, very good sound for a $150 speaker!

Strength:

Excellent midrange, clear highs! Solid enclosure, great price.

Weakness:

Real wood has cheap black paint finish. Wouldn't cost factory much to improve upon.

First, the Klipsch 1.1 can not compete with the Mission M701. The Mission tweeters are as good as the Klipsch; clear and detailed. I like high frequency detail which the Klipsch is known for and the Mission sounds simular. The Mission midrange is far superior. The detail is all present and well seperated whereas the Klipsch is more 'mixed together' loosing that quality that is so important. The Mission M701 bass is tight, the Klipsch falls off at much higher frequency. Also suffers from same lack of detail as the midrange. The Mission were purchased as the surround speakers. I ordered Mission M703s for the front mains. I have not received the M703s yet. In fairness, the M701 is supplied with a larger cabinet and upper bass/midrange speaker. The cost difference between the M701 and the KSB 1.1 is about $25 each at www.ubid.com. (Skip lunch for a few days and save the difference). What is even more promising is during the A/B testing the Klipsch are 'broken in', the Missions are not.
The speaker reviews on this excellent site are somewhat difficult to evaluate. The Klipsch KSB 1.1 is rated higher in this forum than the Mission M701. I rated the Klipsch KSB 1.1 an Overall Rating of '3' from an earlier review. I rate the M701 an Overall Rating of '4'. Unless a review is found with a direct comparison, the numbers are only vague from one manufacture to another. Expectations go up with cost! For $25, this comparison is a no brainer!

Strength:

Strength:

Exceptionally balanced sound, great soundstage, cute package

Weakness:

Bass is so great out of these little speakers, highs get overshadowed on some program material.

I owned the definitive tech BP-10s when they first came out. While I searched around over 5 years ago I came across the Mission 6.5" + 1" bookshelf, and the sound of those little speakers haunted me. I realized later I liked their sound more than the other big dollar options. It's easy to get lost in branding and price-value perceptions. To cut the long story, I rediscovered these little gems and bought 2 pairs along with the 70c3 for my home theater system. They just sound the way you expect a speaker should sound. I've never heard speakers that were this well tonally balanced across the critical mid to lower range. The center tweeter, upper mid/bass driver and lower front port configuration, combined with a deep cabinet is second to none in a bookshelf design. And the bass!!! Not sure what happened but the Brits got it right with this one.The 701 is Mission's best kept secret.

Strength:

Great value. Smooth treble--works well with female vocals.

Weakness:

Bass bump at the mid-lower region. Not sure if it's the cross-over or the matching of the woofer and the port, but there's a lack of cohesiveness in the imaging and tonality--not severe and probably not an issue compared against competition.

I bought these at uBid for $39 apiece plus shipping. I thought I would replace the Linn Kans in the bedroom with these. However, after comparing the two, I'm going to use the Missions in the garage.

I think they're a great value and a fairly musical speaker (very good on vocals). As with any ported design, the matching of the port and the woofer is critical--and it can be hard to avoid a bothersome bass bump. In this case, it looks like Mission decided to optimize the speaker as a standalone box, rather than as part of a system with a subwoofer. As a result, the bass appears emphasized and a little "loose". Of course, I may just be used to the tight bass of sealed box designs. In addition, there doesn't appear to be the cohesive sound image and tonality that I get from the Linns or my other speakers (Alon V). I don't know if this is a cross-over or driver matching issue between the woofer and tweeter. Regardless, it's a very good speaker for the price.

For folks who are considering this speaker, be sure to compare it against others in this price range. I bought mine without seeing or hearing them first. I was persuaded by the reviews posted hear and the Mission brand name. I'm not disappointed because we wanted to get another pair of speakers for a casual system in the garage--and that's where these will go.

I'm giving it a 3 star overall rating--but then I'm a tough grader.

Strength:

Balanced sound, bass presense for size, excellent for dance music, dynamic and pretty clear sounding.

Weakness:

Bass can sometimes dominate, sound a little unnatural compared to others. The build quality of the pair i bought is quite poor the screws on one of the drivers has had to be replaced, an the mid/bass cone glued back together, a similar occurance has happened on a friends pair of 701's

Alround a very compitent pair of speakers for the money outclass most for bass depth and dynamics, but more realism is needed even for speakers at this price. On the build quality issue i have to say i am greatly dissapointed an will be replacing them as soon as funds allow. The cabinet resonates at about the 10 o'clock position on my 50w amp. They would be five stars if mine had'nt broke after only a year of responsible ownership.

Strength:

sweet, smooth midrange, handles the human voice impeccably

Weakness:

bass can get a bit loose and boomy

Those who picked up a pair of these for cheap (about $150) on uBid know what an amazing deal they are. I can't say enough about the midrange quality – voices hang beautifully, acoustic guitars are right there in the room with you (hearing these speakers in my home, several people have been confused, thinking it was me playing the guitar).
I have not experienced any of the quality problems others here have reported.
The only real weakness is somewhat loose, boomy low bass. Mounting these on good stands and perhaps mass loading them (things I cannot do on a permanent basis, but have tried) improve things quite a bit.
If you can find these cheap, go for it. You won't be diappointed unless you're expecting miracles.

Strength:

Price and Sound

Weakness:

nothing

These were first set of speakers that I bought and fell in love with them almost instantly. At the time of purchase I had listened to many other speakers including B&W, Jamo, AE KEF etc and although they were pretty good, non had the all round ability or the better balance of the 701s. My taste in music is quite varied so I needed something that did everything well . I even listened to Missions own 702s (which were out of my budget at the time), and though it had more bass, but I found that it was not as balanced as the 701s. I used them as main speakers with a Sony CD player and amp and enjoyed the setup. After the purchase of the Nak AV10 the missions sounded even better. The vocal and treble impressed for something called a “budget speaker”, and with enough bass (not too much or too little!) to bring it all together. It worked well with all types of music and went loud enough when needed.

They now reside as the rear and work extremely well. The 701s fulfill their new role with all the enjoyment of when I used them as the main speakers. Having these at the rear means I can use the “Large” speaker settings on the AV receiver. Using the full range settings for all speakers is really the only way to go – the effects are just so much better than having only the sub doing all the bass effects. The lobby scene from The Matrix demonstrates this very well and so too does a few scenes from Aliens. I found that the 701 blended well with the 773e’s adding even more to its appeal.

Even at a pretty low price the build quality is outstanding with not even the tiniest of defects or sub-standard build and I ensured that I put them on some study stands. Having read some other reviews on some aspects of the build quality, I have to say that I have not had any of quality issues at all. I think the only thing I would have liked to have seen is it being bi-wireable, which is me just nitpicking, since I cannot really fault this speaker on anything else. Having used the speakers various amplifiers, which include Sony, Nad, Nakamichi and hearing it on Onkyo and a Marantz, the 701s were extremely compatible. The 89db sensitivity is also more than reasonable so that lower powered amplifiers can be used with much worry.

The rest of the system is as follow and I have reviewed each of them in their sections.

Mission 701 (rear)
Mission 77C1 (center)
Mission 773e (main stereo)
REL Storm III (sub-bass)
Pioneer DV-535 (DVD/CD source)
Nakamichi AV-10 (AV receiver)

Mission no longer makes these, having replaced them by the M series – the M71 to be more precise. What else can I say, other than well-done Mission in making decent speakers at very affordable prices. Even their newer M71 currently rules the roost in the budget market. Anyone on a budget will do well to get one of these – you certainly get a lot for the money, just don’t forget decent cables. At the price paid I think these are a steal.

Non so far

If your looking for a cheap speaker with extremly good
sound you can`t go wrong with 701´s.Build is very good and
sound is excelent.I´m using them with my Yamaha 396 AC-3
receiver and they work perfectly together.Sound is open, fast and has a bass that will break your windows.
My room is about 18square meters and there is no need for
a sub even when you look movies on DVD or VCR. I was a
little whoried because i bought them without listening them,
i have only read the reviews from here, but i´m thelling
you people, you can´t go wrong with them, they are exceptional
value and for that price you wont find nothing that can
touch them.
