Strength:

Clarity, clean and detailed mids, bass extension

Weakness:

none

I had my eyes on NHT SuperOnes, but got these on a really
good deal on Ubid. Like everyone here mentioned, great
speakers for the price. The details in the mids are
incredible for the price. I popped in my Mahler Symphony
CD for a test, and ended up listening to the whole piece.
Although I loved my CD, I never realized it could sound
so beautiful.

good bass speaker

mid

good bass speaker, sounds like a floorstander rather than a booksshelf. the mid can be improved on the clarity, must be brighter, however can improve if using a correct amp. i am still looking for a compatible amp, any suggestion ?

Strength:

Wicked Wicked sound with excellent lows, mids & Highs

Weakness:

none

These speakers have won international awards for there all round sound. There is no question why they won.

With these speakers I have a Yamaha RXV 595. Yamaha is way ahead for sound. These guys make musical instruments so they know what a bass drum or a violin should sound like! Don't kid yourself, forget Sony, Kenwood man, go and listen to a Yamaha.

I have Mission 701 speakers and it rocks. No sub yet, but really don't need one. The Yamaha unit pumps pumps out all the sound and the drivers in the Mission love it.

Everlast on this system sounds unbelievable.

And both Yamaha and Missions were cheap at A&B sound in Calgary.

Check these guys out.

Strength:

Good looking, great bass

Weakness:

The treble is to low, and the bass can be to strong from time to time.

Being a poor student i had to find something that would match both my budget and my hunger for good sound. I found the mission at a sale and are very happy with them. The only thing i want a little bit more is some high frequentie sound. I connected the speakers to a sony dolby pro-logig receiver and WOW when i'm watching a dolby surround movie.... no words, well i also have a center and rear speakers of course but thanks to the missions i'm blown a away. And so are my roommates.

But i would rather have the B%W CMD-9 NT's, but i'm still a student

Strength:

Build quality, great dynamic overall sound with good bass, go LOUD cleanly.

Weakness:

white woofers don't really match my decor (NBD). speaker grille frame limits center fill a bit.

I'm still breaking these babies but I'm very happy with the 701s. They fill my loft apartment with clean dynamic sound. I had read in a British audio mag that they could sound rough with overly bright recordings, but that hasn't been the case. That extra bit of top end sparkle creates a sense of space that makes live recordings and classical pieces sound open and real. My only mistake was not buying the matching center channel speaker when it was still widely available. Any help tracking one down would be appreciated.

Strength:

Price, Bass sound without sub, nice clear highs and vocals

Weakness:

Very minor (tweeter below woofer),

Good all-around speakers no matter what kind of music you like there is no genre that sounds bad on here out of the styles of music I listen to (Rock (Soft or Hard), Jazz, A little Country even Hip-Hop, Metal) The Cymbal crashes sound great the vocals are very well done and high-pitched vocals sound awesome (R.Halford, R.Orbison, B.Johnson, female vocals etc..) Snares sound and the bass is good even without the sub.. the bass guitar is great provided you do careful positioning from the back walls. I have a 12' by 12' listening area and find that the mission 701 sound great in this environment.

The cost is what is really great if this would be $500 (U.S) Speakers then it would be a fairly good deal but you can get the pair for about $200 - $250 U.S. good deal for the budget hunter. The design of the mission's is a little different because of the tweeter is below the woofer and would take a few adjustments for your listening position but really it is not too much of a concern really.

It may not work as excellent as it does for me cause everybody has there own opinion but give them a listen for those of you looking for speakers under $300.

Weakness:

None so far. Not fancy real wood looking veneer, but what do you expect from something this price.

I hardly consider myself an audiophile and don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of all the high end audiophile speakers (that I can't afford), but I know what I like to hear and what I'm willing to pay for it. I was in the market for a set of bookshelf or stand mount speakers to replace a pair of Sony towers (SS-MF415, a very good speaker in it's own right for a Sony). The towers were much too big for my apartment and were a 2 way with dual mid-bass cones. The bass and treble were great from these but there was something missing in the middle, perhaps too much bass, and the treble a bit harsh for my liking. I decided to look for a replacement. I considered getting some Cerwin-Vega's to match my center and surrounds (I know, nobody likes C-V or thinks there are a good brand, but the LS6C is a great center channel and LS5's adequate surrounds for my small listening space) but figured after hearing the LS8 and LS6 models I could do better in a bookshelf/stand mount. I needed something that could do double duty for music and HT without breaking the bank.

My second thought was to contribute to the local economy and look at PSB, Athena, Axiom, Studiolab etc... The PSB Image 2 was a great sounding speaker but the price was more than I was willing to pay. I happened upon a sale on the Mission 701's and thought I would try the "Brit's" out as well. I was immediately impressed. I had read some reviews on these and liked what I heard. Upon hearing them in person, I wasn't disappointed. Obviously I was used to my old speakers so the mid-range really impressed me. The bass response was excellent for a speaker this size and the highs were clean, not overly piercing or harsh. I figured the bass was less important as I use a sub, and even though the bass from these was fantastic, they would work even better for music and HT with the sub. As one reviewer put it, Mission is a very "proper" speaker. Being made by the British, that doesn't suprize me. Turns out I like "proper" sounding speakers, who woulda thunk it?!. Their classic looks suited my setup and the size was perfect (on 24" stands they are the perfect height for my listening position and HT setup). I grabbed them for $250 CND (about $170 US) so the price was right. Upon taking them home and setting them up, I loved them right away (lucked out on the positioning I guess). I went through all my fave CD's (Jazz, ambient, classical, alternative, hip-hop) to see how well they went with everything. The 701's handled everything well (not masterful at everything, what speaker is, but good enough that I wasn't disappointed in any way). Very neutral with nothing getting in the way, just clean, smooth and precise sound. HT was just as good, I threw on The Matrix, Gladiator, and Saving Private Ryan. WOW! Big change.

Obviously I can't compare these to many speakers only an obsessive audiophile would even consider listening to, but what I can say is the for someone on a budget who wants great sound and doesn't want to spend big bucks on overpriced "high end" speakers, consider Mission. Quality and quantity of sound for this price is probably pretty hard to find. From what I hear the rest of this lineup (700 series) is on its way out and will soon be harder to find, which is too bad. Mission has had good success in Canada for a long time, but are lesser known in the US and elsewhere. If you can get a chance to hear them, please do, for the money they are a 5 star buy for me. Why pay more and not get anything you don't already have in these.

Strength:

Everything, price

Weakness:

could be more imaging

I listened to allot of speakers, when I say allot I mean ALLOT !!!!
And I started with these missions and ended with these missions.
They almost sounds exactly the same as the B&W 602 S2 !!
I compared them next to each other, almost no difference only when playing Rock music (the B&W was slightly better in the highs)
But for a price difference of more then $250 I went for these, and I haven't been sorry !
I really love them !
The blend perfect with my Mission 70c1 center !!
They give have a perfect bass en are really nice in the highs !
I bought them after research here, listening en reading the What HiFi where they are I believe editor's choice ?!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Strength:

mid to higher bass, MIDRANGE, treble. spatial imaging.

Weakness:

could perhaps throw the image further

for what it's worth, i have been subscribing for well over 5 years to Stereophile, have attended 2 of their shows/conventions in los angeles, have been to a couple of hi end salons in southern calfornia. listen to classical, world, pop/rock (bach, telemann, nusrat ali khan, queen, smashing pumpkins, aimee mann, al dimeola, hamza el din, the stranglers, bauhaus, etc.) i've had the speakers for less than 2 weeks and they're part of my home video system...but i've been listening to quite a few cd's through them because they're that good as stand alone speakers even in my not so big den. the sound is full, mellow, has decent bass (not the hip-hop-nwa-cypress hill variety) but more than adequate. the stereo image thrown is perhaps not up to sam tellig (one of stereophile's writers) variety (you know, palpable presence) but probably can be best described as not too polite. it has an exquisite midrange. i'm using 12 guage acoustic research/recoton cable which aren't necessarily hi end, but suffice. i find myself wanting constantly to put on cd after cd because THEY ARE THAT GOOD. they don't throw the stereo image the way my twin mid-bass & single tweeter focal d'appolito design custom speakers do, but for the price, they are a steal. well over 10 years ago, i worked at circuit city. none of the speakers there (acoustic research, bose, dcm, cerwin vega, now-hear-this) excited me the way these do. the sound of these speakers outperform and are more pleasing than many of the stereophile convention speakers i have heard. at the price i paid at ubid ($150, which included the $50 shipping charge), they are a steal. even at $300, it still is an outstanding buy. enjoy! ...the midrange really draws you in and is a magnet beckoning you to put on cd after cd...even as background listening. they still need to be broken in more but just for fun i may try some hi-end speaker wire.
