Strength:

Relatively smooth and
Relatively strong box help it to disappear

Weakness:

Extremely high distortion
Fat and flabby bass – the very little it has
Too dull

Don’t spend your time with toy loudspeakers. However, if you have to use a small one, try the Mission's or Kef's – about the same price, much better speakers.

Woofer material...now I see that it is not a big deal

The reason I am posting another review is because I think the review of S. B. is very unfair. No doubt about audiophile´s quality of these speakers, as Corey Greenberg said in his review on January´s 94 STEREOPHILE (Vol. 17 No. 1, p.139) and Steven Stone highlighted on STEREOPHILE´s September the same year. I don´t know why some people insist so much about the lack of bass of the Super Zero...what do you expect from a 4.5 inches woofer? Can you live in these days with a pair or little speakers like the Atoms or the Kef Q1 as front speakers of a high-end system without a good subwoofer? Just connect the Super Zeros to a high-end tube amplifier like a VTL and add a fine subwoofer like one of the two subs from NHT and you will see the difference! Only to comment, the Near 15M are the only bookshelf monitors that I have heard that virtually does not need a subwoofer, but it is larger (and more expensive when it was available) than the Super Zeros. I still think that Super Zeros are wonderfull speakers, so I will rise my rating.

I have compared the Super Zeros with other four speakers: Kef Q15, Boston Acoustics CR6 and CR7 and Near 15M (this is much more expensive and bigger). Boston CR6, very nice to viewing, just "squawk", so is much better the CR7, but Super Zeros sounds less directional and more open in the upper midrange. Kef Q15 are just wonderfull and are much more efficient than the Super Zeros; they also have a sense of almost perfect balance like the Super Zeros but costs a little bit more. Near 15M (is a pitty that they are discontinued) is possibly the best bookshelf speaker that I know, but need at least 25 watts RMS to sound right, turning them less efficient. This could be a problem with the Super Zeros if you are thinking to use a low powered amp. Many people can think why to use a big amp with a so little and inefficient speaker like Super Zeros, but if you want a floor standing speaker with at least the same tonal balance you will have to pay two or three times the price. That is, in my opinion, what makes the Super Zeros so special: you will invest $240 or even less and this will lead you to spend a little more in a good high current amp or a tube amp and a good subwoofer.

Strength:

Value, sound quality, imaging, appearance.

Weakness:

No bass - not supposed to have any though.

There is something so "right" about the sound that these gems produce. Must be mated with a subwoofer - NHT makes no claims for bass reproduction - in fact they state that bass response below 85hz has been deliberately eliminated for the most part in order to achieve tonal accuracy through the midrange. I do not find these to be "bright" sounding as some others have stated, just extremely detailed and natural sounding with wonderful imaging that only a mini-monitor can produce so well. These may be one of the all time greatest values in audio. They are not perfect but everything sounds extremely natural on these speakers. They are extremely satisfying.

When I went looking for speakers I needed the most sound quality in the smallest package I could get. After auditioning a variety of speakers at many different stores I finally purchased 5 NHT Superzeros. I didn't need the bass because I have an ACI Titan sub. These speakers are excellent for music and home theater. With music they let me visualize the placement of each instrument. And when I use them for home theater my children think it sounds like the movie theater. There are many great speakers out there, but for my ears, these were the best.

I bought a quintet of Superzeros a year ago and cannot be more pleased. I admit I bought them because of the hype. I didn't even listen to them before I bought them! At one point, I regreted not listening to the Paradigm Titans and comparing them to the SZ's, before I purchased speakers. This was after reading reviews on this web page. But after listening to the Paradigms I did not regret my choice at all. The midrange of the SZ is awesome! The highs aren't as good as the Titan's and neither did they have the bass output (extension and output), but the Titans could not touch the SZ's imaging. If you do buy the SZ you are going to need a subwoofer. But that's the point of buying a sub/sat system. You have the flexibility to place the sub in corner (the best bass placement) and sat's on stands away from the walls to achieve the best imaging. I currently have the SZ's mated to a pair of subs (Energy ES-12). The subs produce a good amount of bass and the SZ produce an awesome soundstage! This combo is great for home theater.

OK GENE, I think that we all understand that you prefer the New Ensemble over the Zero's. I'm not sure what your motives are, but please stop posting (and re-posting). For the price, the Zero is an excellent speaker - and in MY opinion, it sounds much better than the New Ensemble. And yes, I have listened to them (not side by side though). Go peddle your drivel else where.

Oh, and for your information, the Zero does not (nor was it intended to) deliver bass. If you want bass, listen to the One's - around $200-$250 on ebay.
