Strength:

Great bass and highs.

Weakness:

A tad on the heavy side as are the Technics so I wont be moving them around alot!

Bought these to compliment a pair of Technics SB-660s that I purchased in 1975 while in the Army in Germany. They sound so good I have been dragging them around with me ever since. Initally bought a pair of JBL Century 100's but they just didnt have the sound I was hoping for. These Pioneers sure as heck do! They match up to the Technics very well. Running all four through a Pioneer SX-939.

Rock and Roll Heaven!!!!

Strength:

Excellent sound quality, endurance, proven reliability.

Weakness:

Heavy (not really a weakness due to weight contribution to the stengths), replacement parts can be difficult to find due to age.

I bought a pair of HPM-100's new in 1976 and still own and listen to them. I now own 4 pairs of these fantastic speakers. Very crisp highs, thumping lows, and everything in between. A very warm sound. Great for classic rock, classical and everything in between. They sound best very LOUD. I've blown a few tweeters by cranking them up with underpowered amps (clipping), but since upgrading amps have no problems. These speakers rock! I'm currently listenning to them attached to a Pioneer SPEC1/SPEC4 setup (two HPM-100's per channel) and nothing else compares. The originals were purchased for $320 back in 1976. I've since purchased the other 3 pairs on eBay for very reasonable prices, and have a pair of them connected to a Pioneer SA-9900 integrated amp with similar results. If you can get a decent pair for less than $350, buy them. You won't be sorry. If you are fortunate enough to find them at a yard sale for less, don't even hessitate. Later HPM speakers (300's, 700's, 900's) don't compare. Their cabinet quality is much worse (vinyl vs. real walnut veneer) and driver quality are inferior. The quality of these speakers is unsurpassed. The reason they hold up so well is the utilization of rubberized cloth surrounds (like many Altec Lansing / JBL speakers) on all of the drivers. They have no foam surrounds to rot. Also, the bass reflex design of the cabinets is superb. Comparable to the JBL L100's in all respects and maybe even better. Better than most speakers sold today for less than $2500. Replacement drivers are usually available on eBay for reasonable prices. The HPM-150 and HPM-1500 sound even better than the HPM-100 with their 15 inch bass speakers and omni-directional HPM supertweeters (looks really cool, also), but are more rare and HPM-150/HPM-1500 parts are harder to come by, The HPM-150/1500 woofers also have foam surrounds that are subject to rot. If you can find a pair in good shape, they are also an excellent buy, but beware, many do not have original woofers. I love these speakers.

Strength:

Hard pushing rock abilities, eager to please with more juice shot to them.

Weakness:

I didn't own a set earlier.

I have always loved the sound from these speakers. I first heard them in the 70's, but they were out of my price range. I bought some Bose 501's but they could not hold a candle to the 100's. I now have been collecting 70's audio equipment, as I truly believe it is still the strongest product and best sounding out there still. I have some very high end sony es seperates, but they sound so good through a pair or hpm 100s or bose 901's. I love my 901's, but for head banging ass kickin' rock, you will never beat the HPM 100's. As with all Pioneer equipment of that vintage they are very conservativly rated for power. I have pushed them beyond the rated power, (cleanly) no clips, and they hang right in there. Why can't they make quality long lasting speakers like this today. My bose have the cloth surrounds, thank God, because the foam ones rot away with age. Pioneer clearly knew what they were doing when they designed these. My hats off to them. I'll run my 901's for classical and jazz., but only my HPM 100's get the rock and roll call.

Strength:

Great Overall Sound

Weakness:

Tweeters can be a little harsh at loud volumes.

My dad gave a pair of 100's when I moved out because mom said they were to big and wanted them out of the house. I love these speakers very much, and they still sound great after all these years. My question is, is there anyone out there that knows were I can find replacment speakers for the hpm 100's. Also should I replace them with Paradigm Monitor 9's.

Strength:

Solid, thumping bass and crisp highs.

Weakness:

Could use better midrange driver.

I came out of my apartment one morning, and sitting right next to the dumpster was a pair of Pioneer HPM100 speakers. Of course, the first thing I did was take them straight up to my apartment and hooked them up. Someone was a true moron for tossing these thumping speakers out. Aside from a few scratches in the wood, they're perfect. Quite possible some of the finest speakers I've ever owned.

Strength:

-Pro studio monitor quality sound. -Very very tight and well defined bass -There's no competition. -Great "bang for your buck" ratio.

Weakness:

60 to 65 pounds of speaker (each) means you don't want to move these any more than possible. But you can't make a great speaker like this without that weight.

You simply are going to be EXTREMELY hard pressed to find a speaker this good. And you certainly won't find any this good that cost less. These things make tight and well defined bass, along with accurately reproduced mids and highs. After I got these, I just spent two straight days listening to CDs being lulled by the sweet tonal integrity of these speakers. Pioneer really went overboard with these speakers. Aluminum cast frame woofers with a carbon-fiber cone and dopped-pleated surrounds take care of the bass so well, you wont even need a subwoofer. (baring the use of those stupid contraptions called "surround sound" A/V recievers). Ever since I've gotten ahold of an old pioneer SX-850 reciever and these speakers, my modern high end 100 wpc DTS surround sound reciever has been collecting dust. All I can say is that sound quality owns. I've seen others say that these are even better than the JBL 100's.

Strength:

Timeless quality, intense depth, pound a nail thru a 2X4 with ease, subtle low volumne presence, $ for $ ratio untouchable.

Weakness:

Easy to take for granted. Very heavy. Replacement Parts.

These speakers (by way of comparison) blew the highly touted Infnitiys out of the fish bowl. Incredible sound stage. Seemingly ageless, these speakers blow new 5.1 assemblies out of the pond. And with each new either high power amp or class a amp, they morph into something even more capable.

Strength:

Everything. there Enclose design was painstaknly designed and not just guessed or thrown togater. there Drivers are of high end bloodlines.

Weakness:

None, some may consider the weight a weakness, but met i. being there constructed out of 1 1/4 Fiberboard. and use pleny of fiberglass to prevent interrier ressination. only thing i wish they cxould have incorperated was re basketing into there subs. otherwise a perfect breed of highendy home enclosers.

Ive been a sound Engineer for over 20 years, working with Pro Audio equipment. Mostly EV,(Electro-Voice). Ive used alot of retired or extra PA equipment for my home systems over the years. i never really knew Consumer audio products to well, still dont. but ive researched older encloseures and systems, as a hobby and intrest. I do have to day that the HPM-100 is the Base model of the HPM series, its capabilty of handling large amounts of power are amazing. its Design is by far advanced for its time and easly endures over the new equipment you see now day, heavy wood has allways been the best envorment for high end Enclosures. I have to say that the Low end resonse amazed me when i hooked them up to a QSC PL 6.0 pleny of head room for the Speaker, Crisp clean responce with the lows with the mid and highs dialed down. i also have a pair of HPM-100's that i aquired with now sobs, so i cupeled in a 12" EV SP 1250 driver in place of the missing drivers. those EV driver run at 400 RMS only thing i had to do was monor mods to the internal Crossover network and attenuators. Blow away cabinets after that. later i covered them in HD black carpet and mounted hardware to them, using them as side was monitors. I got many other sound engineers asking what they were and who built the cabinets. later i desided to tri-amp the encloseure for even better performance. im blownaway by the cabiney specs Pioneer used then. this other set i found at the dump were in perfect condiotion munus a few minor physical blemishes in the finish. i currently have them set up with other vintage equipment i own in one of the pole barns, my museum or vintage equipment. They are the jet Engines of the class. If you find a pair for sale buy them up, or tell me, ill buy them.

Strength:

Everything about the HPM 100 is a strength including the price of a used pair compaired to the price of new speakers that (might) be considered as capable.

Weakness:

not any that I know of.

A friend of my obtained a pair of HPMs back in 1978. I could not afford a pair back then and had to wait 20 years before buying a pair for 150 dollars from a local Minister. Here it is over 5 years later and I'm listening to them, even now as I write this review. The woofer surrounds are as flexible as the day they were new. Lets talk more about the woofers. If any of you that are reading this are familiar with certain military aircraft, you may know that CARBON FIBER is used in construction of those jets because it is extremely light and extremely rigid, and that is exactly what a woofer needs to be to produce tight non-muddy chest pounding bass. You may have guessed by now...the HPM 100s have carbon fiber woofers. The woofer baskets as well as the mids and tweeters are made out of SOLID cast aluminum, not stamped steel. The magnets on the woofers are just plain massive. The HPM 100 is classified as a "bookshelf" speaker, but at around 60 lbs. each you had better have some strong bookshelves. Pioneer did a beutiful job on these speakers. I agree with everyone else that the hpm 100s love power, good clean power. It always amazes me when I turn up the volume and the sound gets so loud that it hurts, but the sound is perfectly crisp and clear. I also agree with those that say the HPM will hang with speakers costing 2 grand or more. I audition many highend speakers last December when I was shopping for another amp and was amazed again at he fact that the HPM 100 had better base, even better than the subs, better highs and mids than speakers costing the price of a good used car. If you can find them..buy them. Even at 500-700 dollars for 20+ year old speakers, you won't be sorry. And I almost forgot...oiled walnut looks 100 times better than plastic covered particle board.
