Strength:

very well built, solid high quality construction throughout. Sound very open &wide high power handling . Just GREAT sound period.

Weakness:

heavy SOB's

I have sold my HPM 100 speakers only because I found some old JBL monitors for sale and I just could'nt resist. anyway, the HPM 100 was and is a fabulous system and anyone finding a pair in good condition should grab them and don't look back. I lived with mine for years before I went JBL. I do think-no I'm convinced that the Pioneer HPM 100 is inspired by JBL's L100 speaker, (which is a nice way of saying it's copied) But thats ok, great things need repeating.

Strength:

Awesome sound, clarity, bass, beatuful cabinets

Weakness:

Extremely heavy, but that's ok

I would like to say that it's wonderful to see all these great reviews for the HPM-100 speakers. Though I have only owned them for less than a year, It has been a dream of mine to own a pair since I was about 13 years old. I am now almost 39. I talked my parents into helping me purchase a Pioneer SX-650 receiver when I graduated 8th grade in 1978. My dad owned one and it impressed me with its output level and clarity. I was tinkering in audio since I was about 8 years old. At the time I was using a pair of Realistic NOVA 8 speakers (yuk). That receiver could easier bottom out the woofers. I finally had saved up enough money to get a pair of HPM-40 speakers, the 100's were out of my price range. I still own the 40's.They look and sound like the day I bought them. Anyway, I finally own a pair of 100's. I swear I will never part with them. They are the best sounding speakers I've ever owned. I've listened to a lot of different speakers and these blow away speakers costing much more.

Strength:

About any good caracteristic that you could attribute to an awsome and unforgetable power-house speaker, well, put that lable on the HPM-100. The 901 Bose and the ole humpty Vegas that were quite popular back in the day just were not pooh-stank next to these. The wife says that I must get rid of at least one set of speakers, as I've already got 7.1 surround covered, as well as every other room in the house.

Weakness:

Heavey as a T-REX, but as carnivorous as well. I'm not sure I'm willing to call that a "Weakness"

Been reading these reviews and for the most part I'd agree with many but, there seems to be a few out there that contradict the true quality of the HPM-100; My father had purchased three matching systems back then, the first of which was for himself, and then after my brother and I continually blew the fuses in his massive infinity studio monitors (model I forget, but had 15" woofers and an odd cone shaped horn that pointed upward out of the top of the speakers and had a snap on hardwood top that conceiled them, and a cloth cover that could also be put in place of the wood) he decided to go back to SoundStage(place where he purchased all of his equipment)and purchased three pair of the HPM-100 series speakers, along with two more of the Pioneer SX-1250 receivers(which is what he had, and what we kept blowing his speakers with...Did I mention the ADS monitors that we fried time after time?) Anyway, I guess it was his twisted way of making a sarcastic statement, all of which my brother and I learned to love about him..."Dad, that really hits us at the core" teehee. How could he have known he was only creating audio monsters, as the badge people spent more time at our home as they did at the dept. They could actually hear us there - warm summer days playing things like Head East at all 150 watts RMS a channel. I think we may have scarred the brains of the residents of our small town with Montrose and the like. Recently my knuckle-head brother decided he would give his set to a kid that cuts his grass over in Ohio...I about puked! His set was flawless in every way. Even the dust covers were like new, as he only got a couple summers out of his before he left for the Air Force, and they have been in storage ever since. He decided to unclutter his basement, and this was one of the things he decided to basically discard. I found out only days after he did this and went straight to the kid and gave him seven hundred dollars for the things back! 700 dollars and about 150 miles of driving. I consider myself a true audiophile, and for me to chase those things across a state says a bunch for them. I have a set of Martins that I paid over $4,000 for, and everything is being driven by a Pioneer Elite VSX-49TXi ($3,800)When it's time to rock I shut the Martins down and go straight HPM on my neighbors (Seems that nothing has changed but year and town, as my new neighbors hate me as much as the old)Four of those puppies catching 130 watts RMS each, and loving every decible of it. That isn't paper, dude, it's a fiber with a really decent poly resin coating that will still be there when a 2002 rubber surround will long since have rotted away. On the CRACKLING noise, well, dude, you've got some issue that isn't caracteristic of this speaker, as I've never stopped spanking mine over the past twenty + years, and the only thing that ever crackled while listening to mine was my ears!!! You may want to check the condition of your mid and high intenuators, as I did have to have mine cleaned about two years ago after finding dead-spots during adjustment. That or the obvious... a blown mid or tweet. Never was able to achieve that with mine, though. But then, I've never had anything but upper-end receivers hooked to them, which left me able to way over-power them, which won't blow them near as fast as under-powering them with river mud!!! Anyway, correct postioning is TRULY the key to getting what I believe to be the best overall sound from a twenty year old speaker that rivals ANYTHING on the market today, and I've driven many the "High end" brand, and watched them melt down the front of their cabinets. My YAMAHA stage monitors don't seem as happy about the power as HPM. You'll often find band members trying to collect-up on the HPM just for that use! Vocals from these dudes are the S&%T.

Strength:

Powerful and very well built. Specs are excellent, even in coparison to today's speakers.

Weakness:

I have found that replacement Woofers are no longer available from Pioneer.

Oh man what a thrill it has been to read up on everyone's comments about these speakers. My parents bought be these speakers in 1978 for H.S. graduation through a wholesale friend at $160.00 per speaker. Since then they have gone to college and lived through many parties, travelled with me to Arizona and finally settled here in CA. I have always loved these speakers, and now after reading all of the other comments I know that I have speakers that I will never give up. I just recently had my very first problem, one of the lead wires on a woofer is shorted out at the lead connection. I am researching now to determine who can repair or how I can replace the woofer. Pioneer no longer has woofers available. I have seen a couple on Ebay in the last couple of days. I also tried to purchase a another set of HPM100's on ebay but I was outbid at $405.00 for the pair. If anyone has info on repair or replacement of these woofers please email me. If you have a pair to sell please also contact me. These speakers have been pushed many times in the last 24 years and I have never had one problem from them, the sound is just incredible.

Strength:

THEY DON''T TAKE ANYTHING AWAY, OR ADD ANYTHING TO THE MUSIC.

Weakness:

FOR SOME, SOUNG MAY BE TOO BRIGHT. BUT YOU HEAR EVERYTHING.

THEY ARE LIKE GLASS, VERY TRANSPARENT. WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT THE ENGINEER HEARD AT RECORDING. THE EPIDOMY OF THE CALIFORNIA SOUND; BRIGHT. I WAS CASUALLY SHOPPING AT A SALVATION ARMY STORE AND FOUND THEM. 80.00 BUKS FOR A PIECE OF SPEAKER HISTORY. NOT BAD. SOUND?, COMTEMPORARY SPEAKERS CANNOT MATCH THE CLARITY OF THE MUSIC THAT COMES OUT OF THESE SPEAKERS. AND THEY USE SPEAKER CONES MADE OUT OF PAPER! IMAGINE THAT.

Strength:

Dynamic range in bass and mids, punch, clarity in highs, warmth/accuracy in voices & instrumental mids, presentation/delivery, construction (damn solid), case, simplicity in crossover design (does a fine job...don''t need no complexity here).

Weakness:

Staging/imaging blurs a bit on some recordings/works...really a minor shortfall. Proper positioning is critical.

In my years of listening to instrumental, orchestral, chamber and choral works on my trusty HPM-100''s, I''ve experienced quite well-articulated bass, fine sonic clarity and presence, decent staging/imaging (after proper positioning of speakers), and honest repro and range in mids and highs. These speakers were designed & manufactured over 20 years ago; from my observations (and others'', given HPM-100 posts/reviews on audio forums), one can experience comparable performance with today''s speakers for about >= $1000/ea. PS: Stones, Clapton, Floyd, Hendrix, Bowie, Marley, Clash, Young, Pixies, Hole, RadioHead and others also sound pretty damn good on HPM-100''S. PPS: as of 4/1/02, Pioneer still had original replacement tweeters on hand ($44/ea). Suggest you HPM-100 owners snap ''em up before they''re gone for good.

Good sound for the time

Weakness:

Very high price for the time

Those Hpm 100 were ok but I bought the HPM 200, if you can find a set of these you have a wonderfull find. You will know as they are 2 or 3 times the size of the 100''s,have a glass top and a 360o tweeter under the glass.

Strength:

Full range of sound from 12 inch woofer to two tweeters and a great midrange. Can play very loud without losing detail.

Weakness:

Very, very heavy.

I had these speakers for over 20 years and loved every minute. They are the best rock speakers I have ever heard and as my taste in music changed I found they do a very credible job on classical, blues and piano music. There are better speakers out there in the audiophile class but Pioneer has never made anything as good.

Strength:

inter-detail, relatively accurate (except a peak around 8k Hz), Good minitor speakers, all cast driver (except the super tweeter, excellent fit and finish

Weakness:

An eight db narrow peak in 8k Hz, an 4 db peak in 85 Hx, Other than nothing.

I bought these beauties in 1980. I was an engineering student and matched them with a Sansui 8080DB receiver. These things sound short of amazing. I have never heard any thing like these, even today. In early 90's, I matched these speakers with a Pioneer Elite receiver (Dolby Pro Logic) and I had the ultimate sound in my home. All my friends, even those who owned $3000+ speaker systems were amazed with the sound quality and the amount of details these speakers were able to throw at you. I later, replaced all the internal wire with high quality cables and silver based compound, and these things were transformed into the best of there is to it. Today, even my big NHT's and my older Thiel's cannot be a match to these speakers. The peaks I mentioned earlier can be corrected by its on board mid and high adjustments. Using a Radio Shack sound meter, I settled for the mid to be set at 6:00 clock. Once set, these speakers imaging and sound stage will improve substantially. Hey, as I mentioned earlier, excellent base, best midrange and extraordinary tweeter I have ever heard. I wish I just could find a center speaker to match for home theater applications.

Pioneer HPM-100- Seeing the music!!
