Bass is powerful and amplified internally so there is no need for a subwoofer unless you listen to nothing but the bass line. VERY efficient speaker, takes very little to drive it. For the price range if you want something that will take everything you can throw at it but doesn't excell at everything I can't think I've auditioned a speaker I could say was better.

Bass sometimes too powerful and muddies up the mids and treble

As these retailed for 1500 dollars Canadian I can't say they are the best overall sound for the price. The powerfull powered subs often overpower the mids and highs. That being said however if you like to listen to your music at a high volume and you also listen to very powerful sounding ( lots of bass ) these speakers would be a logical choice. For Rap, Crunk, Heavy Metal these "pound." For Sinatra, Ella and Clapton however it sounds great but the bass can often be too much even turned down. All in all however I think most NORTH AMERICAN and young listeners would find these to be right up their alley. I replaced mine with a set of Mission 782 towers. At times I miss listening to the Polks at high levels but they simply don't present the same sound and staging of the Missions. For refererance my system consists of the following. True Sub-Woofer Bass

At discounted prices, you will be hard pressed to find a better speaker for the money. I paid $799 Can$ (Scratched display model) -- I am very satisfied with the purchase.
I've had them now for approx. 6 months and they have been a great addition to my Home Theatre setup.
The Sub's are 'good' Bass producers, but would benifit from adding a dedicated Subwoofer.

All in all, I like my Polks and would recommend them.

Tremendous imaging

Bass is a bit weak

Polk knows speakers and how to use them. Just visit the website and down load the handbook. There's an amazing resource there. The speakers are no different, attention to detail, dynamics and serious imaging in X and Y directions. The bass is a bit understated but the control takes care of that. They are very efficient and are tremendous for home theater, which is what I use them for, mostly. Highly recommended.

Quality and price

I know very little about speakers, but I had been looking for a few months. For someone with a limited budget and apartment space. These were a great buy. Not only did I only pay $274/speaker (plus 8.25% tax) at J and R Music World (they are now bringing in the new RT1000 i's, so the old RT1000p's were on sale), but I also find that these do provide plenty bass for my small apartment. In fact I can't go higher than 1/4, or else my whole place shakes. It would be great to have better access to this dial in front of the speaker, but that's not a big problem. Since they have integrated subwoofers, I found it best to plug each of them to my Yamaha RV 5140's outlets, which would take care of turning the speakers on/off automatically.

Great open highs and mids, tight bass

can't dig the lowest bass, some rattle until fully broken in

For $1000, you cannot find a better speaker. Their clear, bright and open highs are unmatched in this price range. As an audio salesman i could not find a speaker that came close under $2500. They are not power mongers, my 85w yamaha rv1105 drives them perfectly at 9 o'clock in a room 15x20x20. What i did not expect is that they have an incredibly large stereo "sweet spot." Beliveve it or not, i can get separation two rooms away! Home theater is no problem for these babys. I just pop in the "Lobby Shooting Spree" chapter from "The Matrix" DVD, and get blown away! The down side is that they cannot plumb the lowest depths, but you should have a separate sub anyway for proper HT. I use a Velodyne ct120 which for $500 shakes my entire house. I wold recommend this speaker for any type of music listener, lokking for a beautiful speaker under $2000.

I compared the Polk RT600, RT800, RT1000 and the Infinity Overture 1's at Circuit City. The Overture's sound was amazing for it's size but I felt that the Polk's mid-range was brighter. I was buying for HT as well as music listening so I selected the RT1000 because it had the built in subwoofer which greatly enhanced the bass! A seperate subwoofer might give better volume but for me this, all in one package, is a real space saver as well as easier setup. The auto shut down for the built-in amps are nice.
When I got them hooked-up and playing, they sounded great. This was money well spent! I felt the extra $200 each speaker to go from the 600 to the 1000 will pay off. My wife was having serious doubts ( money doubts) until she heard them. She agreed there was no comparison in the sound quality. They are very solid! The subwoofer adjustment on the back panel is great for tweaking in your room acoustic's. I just ordered a new Onkyo ds-656 receiver from "Onecall" ($577). This should perform better that my Kenwood. I've given them 4 stars due to my limited evaluation. But I don't think you could go wrong buying Polk's. Wife agreeds!!!

After owning these speakers for almost 6months now, I can recommend them with the following comments.The highs are high: No doubt about that. I happen to like really crsip sounding music so this fits my taste just perfect.
The mids: Good quality, seem to handle lots of power with out dist.
Subs: This is my only complaint. I listen to everything from rap to classical but if it were not for my PSW150, I would not even know what bass was. I found that turning the sub on the speakers to the 3:00 position, I got "fill bass" and I use my sub for the rest.
Good speakers over all if you can afford a sub.

I must say I'm a bit dissapointed by this speaker. First let me say that for movies these speakers
will probaby work fine. The bass is decent (if not
very extended) and the highs are quite pronounced which
may give one the impression of "really good highs". Which for some may be just what they're looking for. When
It comes to music though, things get a little strange.
First the "really good highs" work against them in music.
They're just too bright. After 20 or so minutes of listening, I had to turn down the volume due to listener's
fatigue. It also sounds like there's a dip in the midrange
of about 2 or 3 db, so needless to say, voices on them
sound rather thin. All added up, you get a bright sounding
speaker with lots of bass and little midrange.(Did I mention that there is no imaging to speak of as well.) It's a shame, because I used to like Polk Audio but now I under-
stand that these new line of speakers are being made in Mexico with cheap labor and cheap materials, (can you say Bose-ified) and it shows.

I cannot say enough good things about these speakers. They are my first replacement components for an aging A/V system, and I expected to be anxious to continue my upgrading - but I can wait - these speakers are so incredible.
The soundstage is excellent. They excell at everything I throw at them - from classical, to rock, to jazz, to home theater. The bass is tight and natural, the highs are just right, and the midrange is superb. These speakers do nothing to color the sound, the are incredibly natural.

I have turned off my EQ, and set bass and treble to the middle. I just don't need to do any equalization with these speakers. That says something, huh?

You must audition these, they have no equal at this price range ($800 street/pair)

this is a terrific speaker. the sound is open and airy. the midrange is clearly defined . while polk describes this speaker as having a powered sub, you really need a seperate sub for true, high power lows. i like to think of this as a bi amped system with the tweeter and midrange being driven by th
e amp and the woofer being powered by the speakers internal amp. i find best results with the jumpers removed and the sub hooked up line level from my pre amp. this is a really great speaker for its cost. it puts out a powerful and tremendous soundstage
